Valerie Marie Topete, 36, faces child abuse charges after she admitted to police that she poured beer into her child's sippy cup, police said.

Here's what happened, according to the Phoenix Police Department:

Authorities were called to a pizza restaurant in Phoenix on Tuesday night after witnesses reported seeing Topete pour beer into her son's sippy cup. Witnesses said the child drank from the cup and also was left alone at the table with the sippy cup.

"Officers interviewed the suspect who made admissions to pouring the beer in the cup because the child 'kept reaching' for the beer pitcher," according to a statement released by Phoenix police. "The mother initially told officers the child did not drink from the cup, but later indicated the child may have drunk from some of the contents."

The child was transported to a local hospital as a precaution, and later released into his father's care.

The Senate on Thursday made a huge discovery of how the Federal Ministry of Finance and Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) disbursed over N701.5 billion Natural Resource Funds as loans to ministries, departments and agencies.

The Senate Committee on Public Accounts made the startling discovery when the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance and a Director in the CBN appeared before the committee to explain the usage of the fund from 2002 to date.

The Chairman of the committee, Senator Ahmed Lawan, said that the committee is investigating three Federal Government accounts.
Lawan listed Natural Resources Development Account, Ecological Fund and Stabilization Account as the accounts under probe.

Lawan (Yobe North) said the Natural Resources Development Account was meant to diversify the economy in the non-oil sector especially solid minerals.
He added that the committee wanted to know how much has accrued to the Natural Resources Development Account from 2002 to 2012.
The chairman also said the committee was interested in knowing the level of disbursement from the account and for what purpose.

The committee was however irked to discover that over N701.5 billion from the account was frittered away as dubious loans to MDAs.
For instance the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was said to have obtained loans of N4.25 billion in 2004 and 2005 to purchase a Chancery in Tokyo from the account.

The Ministry of Steel Development was also said to have obtained a loan of N2.5 from account in 2004 to allegedly to pay staff severance allowances.
Ministry of Interior also received N2 billion loan allegedly for the production of identification cards.

The Federal Government has given the assurance of the safety of all corps members across the country during the mandatory National Youth Corp Service (NYSC).
