Senator Dino Melaye has fired back at Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, saying that he (Wike) lobbied to become running mate to Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Also, Melaye told Wike that “on recovering from his inebriation, Wike should be reminded that Kogi is not Rivers and the people of Kogi State would not worship any foreign God.”

Speaking in an interview with Arise TV yesterday, and in a post on his Facebook page, Melaye claimed Wike called him 19 times in two hours, lobbying to become Atiku’s running mate.

Recall that on Tuesday, Wike said Melaye, who is vying for PDP’s governorship ticket in Kogi, does not have what it takes to be governor.

However, in his reaction, Melaye said it was surprising that Wike has suddenly become the self-appointed public office regulator, who could determine what would happen in states.

Melaye said: “Nigerians should not be fooled. That integrity and equity that he (Wike) is always clamouring, he does not possess one per cent of it.

“He will tell you he wants a southern presidency, that is why he is fighting but that is a bogus lie.

“Wike wanted to be vice-presidential candidate to Atiku. He called me 19 times in two hours when Atiku was going to mention his vice-presidential candidate, lobbying me with everything possible to influence Atiku to announce him as his running mate. I have witnesses.”

Melaye added that Wike’s opposition against him was because he refused to support his “myopic” presidential ambition.

Twitter boss Elon Musk has announced a shake-up of the social media platform's paid verification feature Twitter Blue.

Medical doctor and Nigerian influencer Chinonso Egemba, popularly known as Aproko Doctor, has opened up about his battle with a brain tumor.

He made this known in a video he shared via his Facebook page on Monday.

Aproko's doctor captioned the video, “Throughout December 2022, I was fighting for my life." "I went blind in one eye on the 3rd of December 2022, and on the 5th, I was diagnosed with a brain tumor.”

Speaking in the video, he said, “For the past three weeks or two weeks, I have been fighting for my life." Some of you have no idea. It happened that I was diagnosed with Craniopharyngioma, which is a brain tumor, and I had no idea I would be sharing my story.

“Here I am sitting on this seat, sharing my own story about how I had a tumor in my brain. It was so bad that I couldn’t read out of my phone anymore, to the point where this eye, which I couldn’t read with, was also closing. "They said it is a craniopharyngioma, and we need to do surgery to remove it.”

Meta-owned popular instant messaging platform WhatsApp is reported to be down in many parts of the world including Nigeria. Multiple users have claimed that they are not able to send, receive, or even login into their accounts through WhatsApp. 

According to Down Detector, the website which monitors real-time problems & outages, user reports indicate WhatsApp is having problems since 3:17 AM EDT (12:47 pm). It adds, about 28,413 users have already reported the problem on their website. 69% of the people who have reported the issue complain to have a problem in sending messages, while 7% are facing problems with the App and 24% of them are reporting a problem with the server connection. 

According to Reuters, WhatsApp users in France are also suffering from the issue. “WhatsApp stopped working for many users across France on Tuesday, with around 9,540 problems registered in the last 24 hours about the Meta Platforms owned service on the Down detector.” 

Several users have also taken to Twitter to report the issue. It's about an hour that users are facing problem in sending and receiving messages.

What Number of Days Is August Meeting?  

The meeting is a three days ritual and it is divided into three parts, the first is held at the village level, the second within the community, and the third is held in churches where thanksgivings are held to mark the end of the meeting  

Origin Of August Meeting 

These “mothers’ congresses,” as they truly are, were originally often geared towards self-help rural community development, but have in recent times delved into conflict management, peace-building and human development in rural societies. 

In Igbo communities, women have long had meetings of their own, and such congregations have been rightly emphasized as the base of women’s political power in traditional Igboland. 

These women’s associations, which have pre-colonial and ancient roots, have given Igbo women strong and powerful political voices and symbolism. 

Igbo Women Leadership Roles 

The formal leadership roles by which women became politically significant in Igbo traditional communities are at two interrelated levels: the Umuada and the Otu Alutaradi.  

The Umuadas are daughters of the community who have married into other villages but retain their ties with their community of birth.  

Otu Alutaradi are wives of the men of the village who have come from diverse socio-cultural backgrounds.  

Both groups maintain order, promote life and create consolidation, joy and solidarity for themselves and for the village community.  
These women had the right to convict or to acquit and to levy fines on other women . 
They would insist on their decisions and could go to any length to carry them out.  
They were the watchdogs of the constitution and their leaders promptly called a general meeting when anything appeared to be going wrong in the town. They would bring the matter to the attention of the elders, whose refusal to act could make the women leave the village en masse in protest.  

They continued to use this method during the colonial era, as shown during the Aba Women’s Riot in 1929. 

August Meeting 

The concept of the “August Meeting” is an initiative of the Otu Alutaradi. These are women whose common bond is their place of marriage. The transformation of Otu Alutaradi to “August Meeting” can be traced back to the colonial periods of mass urbanization which affected the Igbo social space along with most other parts of Nigeria, leading to the opening up of such urban centres as Enugu, Port Harcourt, Umuahia, Onitsha, Aba, Owerri, Calabar in the South East and elsewhere in Nigeria. Within these cities, women established various ethnic associations in a bid to provide some socioeconomic security to the urban migrant and to also maintain a link with their rural communities. 

Through this arrangement, they were able to maintain “urban-rural linkage” for development. This is what became popularly known as the “Home and Abroad” meeting in Igboland (“Abroad” simply means one who lives outside Igboland). Convened once a year, usually, during the Christmas period, this meeting was where issues of development and progress in the rural communities were discussed.  

The “Home and Abroad” meeting was the forerunner of the “August” Meeting. With time, the “Home and Abroad” meeting stopped and the women settled for “August Meeting” only.

Hezekiah Okoro Nweje, was an Anglican priest. A native of Onitsha in Anambra state. He was born in 1919 and died in June 1962.

Because of his tremendous righteousness, ease of going with the flow, and humanitarian lifestyle, he was given the nickname "Holy Nweje." He had a strong devotion to God's goods. Whatever contributions he received from the church he oversaw, he always distributed to those in the vineyard, the underprivileged, and the needy. He doesn't hold onto them at the cost of the less privileged.

His Philosophy

According to his philosophy, having riches meant being generous with what you had rather than hoarding it. He once rejected a nomination for the Anglican Bishop of the Niger because he believed another person was better qualified.

It was believed that Rev. Hezekiah Okoro Nweje was an honest, pure, and righteous man. The nickname "Holy Nweje" originated from all the extraordinary qualities he exhibited while still living. showing the extent of one's holiness. He thought that one's anger shouldn't affect the next moment.

In May 1956 Onitsha and Obosi were tussling for a piece of land, Rev Nweje was called as a witness, he told the Judge that none of the towns owned the land, na “Ani bu ani Chukwu” The land and thereof is of the lord. That ended the land tussle. He was always on the side of peace.·

Around April 1956, during the daytime local thieves invaded his house in Onitsha and stole tubers of yam and fowl, he ran after them and told them to come and take more cited hunger as the reason for their unconventional behavior. What a man!

Growing up in Igbo land, if seen or perceived as an upright person, you would be called or nicknamed “Holy Nweje” When next you’re called HOLY NWEJE, do not feel ashamed or mocked. It tells good of you.

Nweje Lane in Onitsha metropolis is a street named to immortalize him.

This is a slang

'OJI UKWU EJE ABA' The story of Igbo hustler Joseph Chukwuka Ulasi from Nnewi in Anambra State. He was born in 1890.

He was nicknamed "O ji ụkwụ eje Aba" because of his unflinching hustling spirit as a young Igbo boy determined to make it in life and of which he eventually did by becoming the most successful transporter from South East.

He regularly traveled on foot from Nnewi to Aba in mid-1920's in search of fortune (O ji ụkwụ eje Aba).

At Aba he traded in textiles and produced, slowly and painstakingly building a solid asset base by setting up roadside stalls along the popular Aba Road. He would recruit apprentices from Nnewi at one stage, up to sixty.

By 1933, he had built up a fleet of six lorries, which he deployed into a road haulage business which earned him a mail delivery contract for the Eastern Provinces. He made fortune from the Mail delivery contract which helped him to up his fleet of lorries from 6 to 14 as at 1935.

The name of his Transport Company is J.C Ulasi Motors, a household name in the 1930s. He became a Warrant Chief at Aba and died in June 1944. His kinsman Louis Odumegwu-Ojukwu was to succeed him as the King of the road haulage business by the formation of his legendary Ojukwu Transport Company in 1937. Chief. J.C Ulasi tremendous success as a transporter also inspired his cousin, late. Chief Ejikeme Ilodibe of "Ekene Dili Chukwu" emerged as a transport magnate. JC C Ulasi died a wealthy Igbo transporter; he was the first Nigerian to venture in to Transport business and it played out well for him. Many others toed his path.

Today, Arewa, Oduduwa & Biafra have grown to become people's identities. But sadly, during elections, only one is demonized in Nigeria.
It is on record that Tinubu is the only candidate who has openly confessed that he does not believe in Nigeria. Presently, his campaign is anchored on Emi Lokan while also dividing Nigerians along religious lines.

It is rather sad that the peacemaker and UNIFIER - Peter Obi, is the one singled out by bigots for their hate-mongering.
May ethnicity and religious bigotry not make Nigerians miss this opportunity.

The Government of Anambra State has sealed off several establishments. The government sealed off no fewer than 25 banks and hotels operating within the state capital, Awka, for failure to pay their taxes and levies to the state.

The facilities were sealed by the Anambra State Internal Revenue Service (AIRS) over the weekend.

It was gathered that levies were mainly those of sanitation, business premises, and sundry government taxes.

Head of the team and desk officer in charge of Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA) in the Anambra State Internal Revenue Service, Mr. James-Morgan Ezeodili, said the enforcement was made following a court order on 11th August 2022 to seal off the businesses.

“This is because of their refusal or failure to appear in court, after being served with writ of summons, as they refused to pay stipulated levies to state government.

“The exercise (sealing of businesses) was part of the state government’s resolve to boost its revenue, and to ensure that the environment was clean by removal of wastes across the roads and streets in the state.”

Some of the facilities sealed are: Nigeria Police Force Micro Finance Bank, Mumbai Festus Hotel, Finotel Classic Hotel, and Shalom Hotel, all in Awka.Others include: Zaramax Hotel, New World Lounge, Summit Splendor Hotel, Ndiolu Micro Finance Bank, Landmark Hotel Nibo, among others.

The Just Concluded Kenya Election
The people of the Republic of Kenya have elected William Samoei Arap Ruto as their new president. Ruto will succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta, whose constitutional two-term maximum of 10 years has ended, barring any unfavorable circumstances. According to Kenya’s constitution, the successful candidate must collect at least 25 percent of the vote from 24 of the country’s 47 counties and 50 percent of the vote plus one.

William Ruto, the candidate for the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), won 50.5 percent of the vote, or 7.1 million votes, in a hotly contested election that required six days of vote counting, a lot of stress, and apprehension as the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) uploaded and collated the results. His main opponent, 77-year-old Raila Odinga of the Orange Democratic Movement/Azimio One Kenya Alliance, got 6.9 million votes, or 48.9 percent of the votes.

There were four major candidates for president in this election, but the third is noticeable: Professor George Wajackoyah of the Roots Party of Kenya, who ran a perhaps unexpected campaign targeting young voters, complete with frenzied, eccentric social media mobilization, reggae dancing, discussions about the benefits of marijuana, and hyena testicles.

[/b]The just completed elections still have an impact on us in Nigeria as we get ready for our own major elections in 2023. In terms of Social media popularity, Wajackoyah’s social media sensation and populism fetched him 61, 969 votes – just about 0.44% of the total votes cast – a grim reminder of the limits of social media populism in the context of elections. The fourth candidate, David Waihiga Mwaure of the Agano Party, almost stood no chance, with 31, 987 votes (0.23%) as this was a tight race between Odinga and Ruto. Kenya’s general election 2022 is probably the most competitive so far in the history of the country.
