⚡Developments in Niger through the prism of Moroccan and 🇳🇬 Nigerian gas. For decades, Algeria and 🇲🇦 Morocco have had a highly complex relationship due to their conflicting positions on the Western Sahara issue, as the two neighboring countries are still in dispute over it. In 2021, IDA severed diplomatic relations with the Kingdom and halted gas supplies through the Maghreb-Europe pipeline that passes through Morocco. Since then, Moroccan authorities have been concerned about finding new suppliers of affordable gas, as the Kingdom itself possesses only modest gas reserves. To address this, they took proactive steps to develop a mega-project for the construction of the Spain-Africa submarine gas pipeline, spanning over 5600 kilometers (photo 1), with the purpose of supplying 🇪🇸 Spain and 13 West African countries with Nigerian gas. Between 2021 and 2023, Moroccan and Nigerian authorities signed memoranda of understanding with oil operators in 10 of the 13 West African countries. In parallel, Algeria initiated its own project with Nigeria, known as the Trans-Sahara gas pipeline. This project is shorter (4000 kilometers) and passes through only one country, 🇳🇪 Niger. In this case, the project primarily requires a transit permit from the Nigerien authorities and ensuring the security of the infrastructure in the highly unstable Sahel region. Nigeria aims to sell its gas to Europe through the pipeline, while Algeria sees it as an opportunity to gain leverage over the 🇪🇺 European Union by having control over the transit of Nigerian gas, in addition to its own gas supplies. This situation left only Niger as a potential transit country. Negotiations on the project have been ongoing for decades, but the parties involved were unable to reach an agreement. Suddenly, there was an attempted military coup in Niger. Based on economic interests and the balance of power, 🇩🇿 Algeria and its allies might try to support those who agree to the construction of a gas pipeline through Niger's territory. 1 Like 1 Share
