Useless children from dysfunctional homes

If you admit they are from dysfunctional homes, then They are not useless but simply children in need of rehabilitation.

I was washing for a moment a while back, when I remembered a decade old experience with one of my ex who is now recently married.


Where do I begin?

I was young, naive, innocent, love struck, shy, a book nerd and a total introvert in my. Twenties. The perfect guy to never get a girlfriend while in school.


But except I did.

I was new in the city, just got into school and all and I got a girlfriend.


I had recently started high school. I had this girl that was SEEING ME. I don't think I was ever dating her, She was younger in age but older in experiences ( All experiences).

So what happened on the day I begged the earth?

A month to that day, I got a new phone from my auntie. It was I think a Samsung , the latest brand as at the year it came out. Very expensive. I lived with my aunt ( A totalitarian, disciplinarian and quite ruthless when she chooses to be, your age won't save you, if you f**k up she will treat it like heart operation where she is the chief surgeon)


Now my girlfriend had this other phone, a which was an iPhone but old really old and washed up. So I was constantly getting complaints from her to change it.

The thing was? I wasn't a worker, I barely got by in my aunt's house. I kept making promises because she kept threatening to leave me. If I knew what then what I knew some years later. Lol I would have probably been the happiest person to have had his heart broken and shattered.


So when my aunt got me this phone because I myself had no good phone, I did what teenagers of my age then do for love. I went to her place and presented the phone to her. And collected hers to be using. (Clap for me)

I thought i had figured it out, I would be the worthy boyfriend once and for all, right?


Well, a week into, hiding and maneuvering my auntie from finding out my phone was missing. On a good Saturday morning, I was suddenly woken up by her kids.

"Second Auntie is here, Uncle Jerry, and She and mummy are calling you"

Who is second auntie, you may ask?

Well, remember how I said my auntie is a total disciplinarian.. Blah blah blah Black sheep!?

Well, it turns out, she is learning from another, her senior sister and having first hand experienced their combo pack, I dreaded ever seeing them together.

My heart gave way, I knew what happened?

The jig is up, pray for a nice and honorable death my soul said.


Can you faint for like a week?


My mind started racing.


I prepared "unpreparingly" to my aunties now waiting for me in the parlor.


I greeted them, it was deflated and kicked out through the window. So I knew this was not a dream. It was a nightmare.

They directed me to sit on the ground, I took my seat like a sacrificial lamb. While the kids came with bundles of water cane. They were just walking in. Majestically and Wonderfully.

The interrogation began.

"Where is your phone?"


My throat went dry, my voice turned speechless, I started sweating and feeling hot all over.

"Where is your phone!?"

I picked option 2. Of course, I even in fear, was more embarrassed of how my girlfriend would react ( I had told her, I bought it with my own money of course) than the tutorial of pain I was about to be put through.


I remembered been flogged like it was "flog your kids day"

Abuses and insults rained over the places.

Remember I rarely ever was seen around the neighborhood. That day people came out for me. I used to be the cool calm kid, good morales and behavior type every parent in the neighborhood wanted their kids to be like

That day, When I was beaten and publicly humiliated before all in my boxers. The world was watching in shock.

My whole life story was shared at my expense to the world, my short comings, everything became public knowledge that I jad a girlfriend was just too good for all, beaten, bruised, insulted and all.

I was then told to go find the phone or never return back. In a city, I knew no one. A city where I barely went out after 4 in the evening.

With just boxers and slippers, nothing else . I hadn't even brushed or washed or eaten anything.

I began to roam around the city. Like a crazy fella.


It was a scary experience for me. But it won't end there. Oh no, it was too good to end there.


I got to my so called girlfriend house, and she was not around. Someone had to call her.

She was shocked to see me, I was more shocked.


in her hands was a new iPhone. My eyes went to the phone. It was not my phone!!!

I could just feel my heart melting.

Two days ago, I was trying to get my students excited about valentine, I was sort of shocked about the response I got.

"Valentine is for boyfriend and girlfriend" one said.

"We Don't celebrate valentine, it's a sin" another added.

Shocked but okay, i saw the problem. I am a new teacher and i don't know what to make of this but I won't let this dangerous notions float in my kids heads.

So i took my time to explain what valentine was about how and how important it was for them to use it as an opportunity always to show gratitude, thankfulness and support to those who care deeply about them and also even the strangers in need of help.

I told them to always ensure they celebrate it. And made them pick their names rolled up to share gifts to one another tomorrow. (14/02/2025)

I told them it was important they learn to express and show gratitude to friends, family and people in their lives who support, guide, advice and care about them always. And told them various stories about the importance of gratitude.

For the first time, i got a feeling they were genuinely excited. I honestly can't wait for tomorrow to see the kids.


However, I wont be celebrating valentine tomorrow, I have never really celebrated it nor my birthdays or really a big fan of celebrations since I knew me.

Back then, it was more of I been shy and timid around people, so i never went on any real successful dates so I accepted and believed celebrations were not my thing.

Until this year, for the first time, i really wanted to celebrated it with the lady in my life who has really been God's blessings to me. For the first time I just wished i could tell her thank you for been a great and wonderful person to me, nothing fancy, nothing out of the ordinary.

I was hoping i could cook some meal and invite her over just to say thank you. However my request for an advance pay from my job has been denied. I got the crushing news too late after i had made plans with her.

I had made plans and now, I have to cancel them. I know she won't say she doesn't mind and really she doesn't, that's how wonderful she is plus she is also not big on valentine, thanks to how some people tend to see the VALENTINE day lol. But I can't help but feel hurt about it. I just wanted to say thank you really.


She has been a supportive, prayerful, strong and trustworthy partner who has dedicated her time to see us work towards our goals of settling down together.

For the first time, I really felt like just surprising her, not the 4 naira text or 100 naira airtime call to say happy new month,happy birthday, happy new year, or something.

I will make it up to her some how even though time and time again, she has proven never to be worried about small beginnings and to stay strong and prayerful in difficult situations. I do wish when i get paid this month end i will get her something eventually.


As for my kids tomorrow, i have to put up a positive energy and attitude and encourage them to show true agape love and gratitude to one another. Thats what I grew up to know valentine day to be.

But Behind the smiles tomorrow , I knew what I would have been able to do better. A simple cooked lunch and a thank you to the one person who God has really used to blessed me so far in life.



How would you be spending your valentine day tomorrow? Please celebrate and say thank you to people in your life tomorrow. Even your voice can be a perfect gift to someone tomorrow.

This should be investigated to determine this was actually suicide or murder /homicide. I feel. Most times it is so easy to term any death suicide by most.
