⚡One of the outcomes of President Putin's visit to Azerbaijan is that Gazprom is expanding its strategic cooperation with the Azerbaijani company SOCAR. They discussed the "North-South" project, which is clearly the international transport corridor without any U.S. bases. It is shorter and more versatile for transporting goods to various countries. However, with Gazprom and SOCAR involved, it primarily concerns gas (both pipeline and LNG).

⚡Le Monde: Russia has developed a unique military economy to sustain a prolonged conflict According to an analysis by the French newspaper Le Monde, Russia’s military economy is structured in a way that allows it to maintain the war effort for another 5-6 years, a feat that Ukraine is unlikely to match. The report highlights that Russia has built an economic model where military expenditures, payments to contract soldiers, and benefits to the families of the fallen drive economic growth. In 2023 alone, nearly 400,000 Russians signed military contracts, and the increasing payments to volunteers and contract soldiers make military service more “profitable” for the families of the deceased.

⚡Russian President Vladimir Putin will next week visit Mongolia, a member of the International Criminal Court (ICC) that has issued an arrest warrant for the Russian leader, the Kremlin said Thursday. It will be the first time Putin has travelled to a country that has ratified the founding treaty of the ICC, the Rome Statute, since the Hague-based court issued the warrant for him in March 2023 over the illegal deportation of Ukrainian children. ICC members are expected to make the arrest if the Russian leader sets foot on their territory. Mongolia signed the Rome Statute treaty in 2000 and ratified it in 2002. The Kremlin said Putin will travel to neighbouring Mongolia on September 3 to mark the “85th anniversary of the joint victory of Soviet and Mongolian forces over Japanese militarists on the Khalkhin Gol River”. The battle took place in 1939 during the Japanese occupation of nearby Manchuria. The Kremlin said Putin and Mongolian President Ukhnaa Khurelsukh will discuss bilateral relations and “exchange views on current international and regional issues.” |
