Earlier this year, Tajikistan banned the wearing of niqabs, and thousands of Tajik women rushed to the Russian border where it's still legal to wear it Mikhail Matveev, a member of State Duma, has drafted a law that potentially outlaws this practice, but he insists that it has nothing to do with niqabs in particular: "The bill will not include any mention of niqabs, burqas or ritual masks worn by members of Polynesian tribes. The motivation behind the bill is not religious, but rather security and identity-related issues" Nearly 2 million people in Russia took part in a survey on the ban on niqabs. 86% of the respondents support banning them.
