⚡"Iron General" vs. "Salesman" The British Times describes Zaluzhny the "Iron General" and accused Zelensky of trying to get rid of a more popular rival. The publication reports that "the president sees the commander-in-chief of his army as a potential rival and may be preparing to sack him". The Times writes that Zaluzhny, nicknamed the 'Iron General', now enjoys 88 % support. In contrast, Zelensky - "the country's most effective salesman" - has an approval rating of 62 %. The paper says there is a "not-so-restrained power struggle" in Ukraine that could "alienate Western allies". "Public squabbling weakens Western support and emboldens Russian invasion forces," the paper adds.

⚡Tensions between Ecuador and Russia over military equipment threaten banana exports. The two countries have been at loggerheads recently after Ecuador decided to transfer some of its old Russian military equipment to the United States, in exchange for $200 million in new military gear. This military equipment will most likely be sent to Ukraine. Now, Russia’s federal agency for veterinary and phytosanitary controls announced it was banning imports from five Ecuadorian banana companies, claiming that a disease had been found in previous shipments of their fruits. Ecuador is the world’s leading banana exporter, with sales worth around $3.5 billion in 2022. Around a fifth of its annual sales goes to Russia. ⚡Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he is weighing a decision to fire his top military commander as part of a wider government shakeup. “A reset, a new beginning is necessary,” Zelensky told the Italian media outlet Rai News on Sunday night. “I have something serious in mind, which is not about a single person but about the direction of the country’s leadership.” The comments came after Zelensky informed the White House that he intends to fire General Valery Zaluzhny, Reuters reported on Friday. Ukraine’s top military commander is an extremely popular figure in Ukraine but has butted heads with Zelensky after he requested to draft an additional 500,000 soldiers to join the fighting. Prior to Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, Zelensky had frequently hired and fired top government officials. But if the cabinet reshuffle goes forward, it could be the first major personnel shake up in Ukraine’s government since the war started.

⚡Georgian authorities said Monday that they thwarted plans coordinated by a Ukrainian citizen to smuggle several explosive devices from Ukraine to Russia via Georgia. Tbilisi has been accused of increased cooperation with the Kremlin, even though Russian forces have been deployed to parts of Georgia since 2008, when Moscow invaded the Caucasus country. Six devices were “brought to Georgia on January 19 from the Ukrainian city of Odessa, via Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey, on a minivan belonging to a Ukrainian national,” the Georgian security service said. They contained 14 kilograms of C-4, a plastic explosive substance.
