⚡An international nuclear fusion project including the EU and Russia will continue despite a “rough sea” and “difficulties”, its chief said Monday during a visit to Russia. “If you are running a marathon, you have to keep going. You can maybe slow down a little bit,” Pietro Barabaschi, director-general of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project, told reporters. Installed at a site in southern France, the project aims to prove the feasibility of fusion as a large-scale and carbon-free source of energy. The decades-old plan has a history of technical challenges and cost overruns. “I think it’s important to keep a certain pace in research,” Barabaschi said, comparing the current international context to “trying to cross rough sea”. ITER was set in motion after a 1985 summit between US president Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. Russia has recently detained and tried a number of US citizens and completed a large prisoner exchange, including Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, which enabled the return of Russians jailed in the United States. ⚡Alchevsk Metallurgical Plant has launched a blast furnace after a long downtime. A blast furnace was launched at the Alchevsk Metallurgical Plant in the Luhansk People's Republic after seven years of downtime. The furnace was stopped in November 2016 in connection with the blockade imposed by Ukraine and active hostilities in the Donbas, the southern Mining and Metallurgical Combine explained. Since November 2023, the blast furnace has been included in the capital repair program. And so, thanks to the launch of the modernized furnace, the company plans not only to revive the former production rates but also to increase and increase the volume and quality of products. The Alchevsk Metallurgical Plant is one of the largest ferrous metallurgy enterprises in the Donbas and the southern part of Russia.
