⚡Japan lodged a “very serious protest” with Moscow after a Russian patrol plane entered its airspace three times, the defence minister said Monday, calling it the first confirmed incursion since 2019. The military responded by scrambling fighter jets and issuing radio and flare warnings, Minoru Kihara told reporters. “We confirmed today that a Russian Il-38 patrol aircraft has violated our airspace over our territorial waters north of Rebun Island, Hokkaido, on three occasions,” he said. “The airspace violation is extremely regrettable and today we lodged a very serious protest with the Russian government via diplomatic channels and strongly urged them to prevent a recurrence.” |

⚡Japan fires destroyer captain who entered China's territorial waters. Tokyo unofficially notified Beijing that the incident was unintentional due to a navigational error. A Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (MSDF) destroyer, the Suzutsuki, inadvertently entered Chinese territorial waters on July 4, 2024. The ship sailed for about 20 minutes within 12 nautical miles (22 kilometers) of the coast of Zhejiang Province. Tokyo is considering disciplinary measures against other crew members.

⚡The United States submitted a detailed proposal to resolve the issue of Türkiye's acquisition of Russian S-400 air-defense systems for F-35 jets. The plan would allow Türkiye to formally keep the missiles on its territory but transfer their control to the United States. The proposal suggests transferring the Russian S-400 systems to the US-controlled sector of Incirlik base in southern Türkiye. The aim is to allow Türkiye to return to the F-35 fighter jet program. Discussions appear to be at a more advanced stage than previously known. Both sides seem to desire a successful conclusion to these talks. Türkiye's initial response is reportedly not positive, but discussions are expected to continue.

⚡The US is betting on South Korea to bail out it's crippled shipbuilding industry. South Korean shipbuilding company Hanwha Ocean recently announced its acquisition of a former US Navy shipyard in Philadelphia. Besides the shipyard deal, valued at $100 million, Hanwha secured its first maintenance and repair contract with the US Navy. The US shipbuilding industry has been mired in years-long delays and cost overruns. However, even with support from Asian firms, it could take the US years to close the gap with China in maritime power is stark numbers are anything to go by. While China commands 40% of global commercial shipbuilding output, the US accounts for less than 1%. Last year, China had orders for 1,794 large commercial ships, South Korea had 734, Japan had 587 – but the US had just five. China had over 5,000 ocean-going commercial vessels in early 2023, while the US-flagged merchant fleet numbered only 177. |

⚡Ukrainian soldier opens fire in a grocery store in the Kiev region. Around 2 PM today, a soldier entered a store in the Obukhovshchina area and began shooting randomly. The saleswoman and the store owner were wounded during the incident, and the soldier fled the scene immediately after the shooting. There are concerns that incidents like this could become more frequent in the near future.

⚡Russia and Pakistan on Thursday formalised their commitment to deepening bilateral ties with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for expanding cooperation across multiple sectors. The agreement, signed by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk and Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, has set the stage for enhancing cooperation in key sectors including trade, energy, connectivity and defence. The signing followed a meeting between Mr Overchuk and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, where both sides reaffirmed the importance of expanding their relationship across multiple domains. Mr Sharif, while talking to the Russian delegation, reiterated the government’s stance that strengthening relations with Russia was a priority for Pakistan’s foreign policy.
