Kaja Kallas said she was both "worried and surprised" by the repeated failure by most NATO countries to meet their 2% of GDP spending commitments.

⚡️The 🇬🇧 UK economy grew slightly in the first three months of the year, according to official figures. However, the economy shrank 0.3% in March as retail and car sales fell sharply, and public sector strikes were more disruptive than February as NHS staff and teachers took to picket lines.

Growth of 0.1% was recorded by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) in the three months up to March, the lowest amount possible to still be classed as growth as IT and construction sector activity offset the impact of strikes.

The commander of Russia's Black Sea Fleet said its defences are being tightened amid a repeated Ukrainian drone strikes against its base in the Crimean port of Sevastopol.

🇷🇺 Vice Admiral Viktor Sokolov told Friday's edition of the military newspaper Krasnaya Zvezda "Red Star": "In connection with the threat of attacks by robotic surface and underwater systems, we have increased the technical defences of the fleet's main base and of the ships' anchorages."

The leader of the Wagner mercenary group has written to 🇷🇺 Russian defence minister Sergei Shoigu urging him to visit Bakhmut and "independently assess the situation".

In a letter to Mr Shoigu, published by his press service on Telegram, Yevgeny Prigozhin says 🇺🇦 Ukrainian forces have "launched a number of successful counterattacks".

"Considering the difficult operational situation, as well as your many years of service in combat operations, I ask you to come to the territory of the settlement," Mr Prigozhin writes.
