⚡Another exercise — Yama-Sakura 85 — has begun a in the Asia-Pacific region. The total number of participants amounts to 6250 troops. And everything will take place at three military ranges. Recently the Japanese authorities have closed the airspace over the Ryukyu Islands northeast of Taiwan until February 27 next year, deploying four batteries of Patriot PAC-3 SAM systems. PLA activity in the region has been off the charts in recent days, allowing the U.S. and allies to justify increased activity off China's coast, particularly around the disputed islands. And by deploying the Patriots, the Japanese are covering not only themselves but also Taiwan by strengthening their air defense system. |

⚡Brazil to join OPEC+ from next year. Major producer Brazil will join OPEC+ from next year, the oil cartel announced on Thursday. Brazil is among the world’s top 10 producers and has been the largest oil producer in Latin America since 2016. Its crude production hit a record 3.7 million barrels per day in September, a near 17 percent increase from the same month last year and a 6.1 percent hike from August, according to pricing agency Argus Media. Ministers of the 13-member Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) headed by Saudi Arabia and its 10 partners led by Russia were meeting to discuss further output cuts to boost prices. |

⚡The biggest problem with Ukraine’s new fleet of 31 American-made M-1 Abrams tanks isn’t the tanks’ 1,500-horsepower turbine engines. Not really. No, it’s the filters in the engines’ intakes. The filters keep dirt and debris from fouling and wrecking an M-1’s delicate—but powerful—engine. They require constant cleaning. If an Abrams’ four-person crew neglects to clean its tank’s filters every 12 hours or so, it might so badly damage the engine that the battalion has no choice but to remove the engine, and potentially the transmission, and ship it away for a lengthy overhaul. Laura Cooper, a U.S. deputy defense secretary, called the Abrams “a gas-guzzler.”
