Leptospirosis is a type of bacterial infection spread by animals. It is caused by a strain of bacteria called leptospira. In 90% of cases, leptospirosis only causes mild flu-like symptoms, such as headache, chills and muscle pain. However, in some cases the infection is more severe and can cause life- threatening problems, including organ failure and internal bleeding. In its most severe form, leptospirosis is also known as Weil's disease. The common mild symptoms mean that most leptospirosis infections are hard to diagnose. Diagnosis is easier if the infection causes more serious problems. A detailed history of places you have been and any animals you have been in contact with can help with a diagnosis. http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Leptospirosis/Pages/Introduction.aspx |
A viral outbreak can be controlled by reducing contact. Please keep your dogs at home, don't let other dogs visit, you don't know where they have been, who they have been with. Please be extra careful when you go to the vet. Bathe your dog when you come back from the vet to reduce the rate of nosocomial infections. Ensure proper hygiene for you and your dogs. *Basically, use the ebola approach. May we not have sorry tales. Thank you. |
ORIGINAL BY EWIT EFOM OF OBEDA KENNELS, SURULERE. Warning to all dog owners – Leptospirosis outbreak in Lagos We are sad no announce that we've lost eight ( 12 weeks old puppiesof Tom Garner's Bloodlne and two (2) 6 months old Tudor's bloodline to this dreadful disease. We also lost 2 GSD 14 weeks old puppies. We thought it was parvo until the test results came through. Our six months old Dogo Argentino and our Six months old German Boxer were not affected they were vaccined aboard. Our newly adopted 11 months Boerboel also shows signs of infection. All dogs less than a year old vaccined in Nigeria came down - perhaps our vaccine failure could be due to refrigeration from customs to warehouse to reseller to you and I. Symptoms in dogs include vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, high temperature and jaundice. The vet says eight out of the nine cases seen have been in vaccinated dogs and vets suspect a new strain of Leptospirosis bacteria is emerging in this area, one that the classical vaccination does not protect against or maybe refrigeration. The disease originates from rats and can be contracted by wildlife and dogs, but is almost unheard of in cats. It is spread through urine and tends to hang around in stagnant water. As rats are everywhere around us, we believe that all dogs are at risk. |
knyte:Thank you for the polio analogy. |
You are allowed to post your pups pictures as he grows. Feel free to ask questions concerning your puppy too.. Cheers! |
For the benefit of other readers, please, lets vacinnate our genetically modified canine friends to avoid unecessary disease outbreak. Unlike our mongrels who have acquired their immunity upon premediated exposure and selective elimination of their weaker numbers, our genetically tampered friends have not. A small sacrifice to pay for man's experiment. |
Prodeegee:Thank you very much Prodeegee. Why take unecessary risks? |
oluomoadebayo:Antibody production doesn't damage the immune system, it awakens it to potential invasion. |
oluomoadebayo:Its still the same thing. You don't expose your dogs, no need to vaccinate. Not all ebola victims died, you can't predict the ones that would survive. Vaccination is prevention. |
oluomoadebayo:No exposure, No disease. Moreover, a dog that has crossed the 4month mark can successfully beat the parvo virus depending on immunological factors and acquired resistant antigenic strains. e.g mongrels immune to parvo, anti tick resistant sebum is some cases. The ills of genetic tampering and excessive domestication include our canine friends being stripped of innate resistance and acquired immunity. Expose your less than 4month old puppy to an infected dog and come back to tell us you are doing fine. In all, vaccination is a preventive measure. Why take unecessary risks? |
Thank you everybody, the calls have been overwhelming since the release of the puppy pics, thank you everybody especially those with kind words of encouragement. Thank you everybody. Cheers! |
Alubosa:No sir. Thank you. |
pixar:Thank you sir. |
Prodeegee:Yes bro. Thanks |
Prodeegee:Its a recommendation from a professional from one of the books I read. Its a precaution though. |
