CrimeEFCC Arrests Ex-jamb Staff For N10m Fraud by xgnx(op): 3:41am On Feb 20, 2019
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC), Ibadan Zonal Office has arrested one Kola Al-Amin, a former staff of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, over alleged forgery and obtaining money by false pretences.

EFCC, in a statement signed by its acting Spokesperson, Tony Orilade, disclosed that his (Al-Amin) arrest followed a petition alleging that sometime in November, 2010, Kola, who operates under the name of “Cool Technologies Consult Limited”with office located at No.4/900, Taiwo House, Second Floor, Yemetu Total Garden, Ibadan, Oyo State, approached the complainant, a microfinance bank (name withheld) with a Local Purchasing Order (LPO) for the supply of internet hardware which he claimed was from JAMB headquarters, Abuja.

Orilade said that Al-Amin requested the microfinance bank to advance him a loan of 10,000,000.00 (Ten Million Naira) only to finance the LPO.

The petitioner, according to the Orilade, further alleged that Kola was granted the loan with the agreement that the proceeding of the LPO from JAMB will be paid directly into his account with the microfinance bank but that at maturity time for repayment, he allegedly disappeared.

On verification of the LPO in JAMB headquarters, Abuja, it was discovered that the LPO provided by the suspect was forged and that he was no longer a staff of the organization.

Additional investigation revealed that the suspect has been involved in several other fraudulent deals under the same guise of being a JAMB official, Orilade added.

Orilade said further that he will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.

PoliticsPostponement: NIGERIA Will Loose Billions Of Naira Say By NACCIMA, Others by xgnx(op): 5:40pm On Feb 16, 2019
The Vice President National Association of Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, (NACCIMA) Mr Tony Ejinkeonye says Nigeria will lose billions of naira due to the postponement of the general election. Ejinkeonye who is also the Director, Business Development for Africa, Esilknet Africa Network Ltd., told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Abuja that the postponement would affect the economy adversely. “It is quite unfortunate that the election was postponed. Economically, billions of naira have been lost and will be lost in the coming weeks. Industries, businesses including airlines were affected by the movement restriction. “We expect also the same thing happening in the coming weeks. Most important effect is the perception of the international financial community. “Situations like this will create panic with massive withdrawal and stoppage of funds inflow to Nigeria. I dread the effects in the stock market on Monday,” he said. Ejinkeonye who said that it would be difficult to determine the actual figure of the loss but would be in billion of naira said however, that the real cost would be the loss of investor confidence. He however advised Nigerians not to be discouraged but should still go and exercise their franchise next Saturday. In the same vein President, National Association of Nigerian Traders (NANTs) Mr Ken Ukaoha, said the country will lose more than N140 billion due to the postponement. Ukaoha noted that the postponement would affect the economy adversely in terms of money that the government, political parties and ordinary Nigerians had already expended on logistics and otherwise. He described the election postponement as appalling and unfortunate which could make the nation become a laughing stock in among comity of nations. “The loss is monumental if you look at the economic consequences, essentially if you look at trading; Nigeria depends so much on daily turning of fund through distribution and redistribution of goods and commodity. “I am telling you that with this calculation I have just done here, we are losing nothing less than 140 billion naira, because we all got this information so late “If you go round now you will see that the shops are close, so we are losing chunk of money just for this incident. “We are not talking about the manufacturers and the industrialists because they have all sent their workers away to go and perform their civic duty. “Farmers did not go to their farms because they want to exercise their franchise. If you do the computation your guess is as good as mine in terms of what the nation is losing, we should learn.” He said: “The truth is that it appeared that the nation has refused to get things right, the implication is that if care is not taken the country will become a laughing stock in the minds of comity of nations “You could remembered that Ghana had elections which had no encumbrances, no itches attached hereto, Cote D’ Ivoire has, Liberia just had these are countries that should be learning from us. “If you take a look at what happened in 2015 and what we ran into now I think we should be matured and man enough to learn because this thing will continue to follow us in every election.”He expressed concern over the resources that would be wasted in the conduct of the elections due to the postponement. “Whether we like it or not we are going to spend more money in the conduct of the election, we have lost quiet a lot. “Number two, beyond what INEC is going to re-spend in terms of security; in terms of logistic that it is hinging on we are going to spend more,” he said. According to him, the government would have spent the money to address issues such as infrastructure, health, education and payment of workers’ salaries. However, Ukaoha advised traders and farmers to ensure that they voted on Saturday as the future of the country depended on them as well as other.
PoliticsWhy General Elections Were Postponed- INEC by xgnx(op): 7:49am On Feb 16, 2019
Nigeria’s electoral body, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has explained its reasons for postponing the general elections a few hours to the commencement. “Following a careful review of the implementation of its logistics and operational plan, and the determination to conduct free, fair, and credible elections, the commission came to the conclusion that proceeding with the elections as scheduled is no longer feasible,” INEC boss Mahmood Yakubu said at a press briefing on Saturday morning in Abuja. The general elections were scheduled to commence Saturday, February 16 with the presidential and National Assembly elections. Yakubu said the presidential and National Assembly elections have been rescheduled to hold on February 23 while the governorship and state houses of assembly elections will take place on March 9. It was not the first time that INEC would postpone a scheduled general election. In 2015, the presidential election was shifted from February 14 to March 28th, 2015, while the governorship and assembly elections scheduled for 28 February were shifted to 11 April. The elections were postponed because of security issues. Similarly, in 2011, the National Assembly elections were postponed on the day the election was to be held due to logistics failure. The same situation was repeated in 2019. Polling centres were initially meant to open Saturday at 8:00 a.m. with more than 84 million registered voters across 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. The postponement may heighten tensions in what has been a tight race between incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari, and his main challenger from the People’s Democratic Party Atiku Abubakar. The political parties of both candidates have accused each other of trying to rig the vote. Prior to the election date, INEC offices in three states of the country- Plateau, Abia and recently Anambra, were engulfed by fire outbreaks, all within ten days to Nigeria’s 2019 general elections. Despite fire outbreaks at three offices of INEC that has claimed thousands of permanent voters’ cards (PVCs) and other election equipment, the Nigeria electoral body had said it has no plans to postpone the elections. But INEC reversed the decision. INEC chairman Yakubu said, “This was a difficult decision for the Commission to take, but necessary for the successful delivery of the elections and the consolidation of our democracy.”
Nairaland GeneralBuhari Campaign Condemns The Postpone Of Elections by xgnx(op): 6:14am On Feb 16, 2019
Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari’s Campaign Organisation said the postponement of the 2019 general election by Independent National Electoral Commission is “a huge disappointment.” “We condemn and deprecate this tardiness of the electoral umpire in the strongest terms possible,” the Director of Media of the Buhari Campaign Organisation, Festus Keyamo, said in a statement on Saturday. This came few hours after the INEC chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, announced the postponement at a press briefing on Saturday morning held at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja. “Following a careful review of the implementation of its logistics and operational plan, and the determination to conduct free, fair, and credible elections, the commission came to the conclusion that proceeding with the elections as scheduled is no longer feasible,” Yakubu said. Keyamo accused the electoral watchdog of conniving with the opposition People’s Democratic Party to scuper the election. He stated that “the rumour mill is agog with the suggestion that this postponement has been orchestrated in collusion with the main opposition.” But the opposition People’s Democratic Party has also accused the ruling party of influencing INEC’s decision. It accused the ruling party of deliberately orchestrating the postponement in order to perfect its plan to rig the elections. APC, the PDP said, “have been trying all options including but not limited to burning down INEC offices in some states and destroying of electoral materials to create artificial problems upon which to stand for their dubious act.” “With several of their rigging options failing, they have to force INEC to agree to a shift in the election or a staggered election with flimsy excuses pre-manufactured for the purpose,”PDP’s national chairman spokesman Ike Abonyi said in a statement on Saturday.
PoliticsINEC Postpone General Elections by xgnx(op): 6:05am On Feb 16, 2019
The Independent National Electoral Commission has postponed the presidential and National Assembly elections earlier scheduled for Saturday. INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, announced this at a press briefing on Saturday morning held at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja. “Following a careful review of the implementation of its logistics and operational plan, and the determination to conduct free, fair, and credible elections, the commission came to the conclusion that proceeding with the elections as scheduled is no longer feasible,” Yakubu said. Yakubu said the Presidential and National Assembly elections, initially scheduled for Saturday, February 16, will now hold on February 23, while the governorship and state houses of assembly elections will take place on March 9. The press briefing followed a crucial meeting of the INEC boss with top officials of the commission which started late on Friday night. “This was a difficult decision for the Commission to take, but necessary for the successful delivery of the elections and the consolidation of our democracy,” Yakubu said. “The Commission will meet key stakeholders to update them on this development at 2 p.m. on Saturday, 16th February 2019 at the Abuja International Conference Centre,” he added. Polling centres were initially meant to open Saturday at 8 a.m., with more than 84 million registered voters across 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. The postponement may heighten tensions in what has been a tight race between incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari, and his main challenger from the People’s Democratic Party Atiku Abubakar. The political parties of both candidates have accused each other of trying to rig the vote. Buhari arrived his home town of Daura, in Katsina State on Thursday, where he was planning to vote. Vice President Yemi Osinbajo had also travelled to Lagos to vote.

PoliticsParty Founded By Okorocha Adopts Atiku As Persidential Candidate by xgnx(op): 2:22pm On Jan 15, 2019
A political party formed by Imo State governor Rochas Okorocha, Action Alliance (AA), has withdrawn its support for Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari and adopted presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party Atiku Abubakar for the February 16 election. “We are for Atiku/Obi leadership and we are glad to work with all believers of true federalism and efficient administration of governance at all levels to accomplish this as we approach the forthcoming elections,” AA national chairman Kenneth Udeze said at a press conference in Abuja. Okorocha had been at loggerheads with the APC leadership after his anointed successor and son-in-law Uche Nwosu lost the APC governorship ticket. Nwosu lost the governorship ticket to a serving lawmaker, Senator Hope Uzodinma, who is representing Orlu constituency of Imo State in the Nigerian Senate Okorocha then announced that Nwosu would seek his governorship ambition on the platform of AA, but will still support Buhari’s re-election. Udeze, however, said, “the National Executive Committee (NEC) of our party is on the same page concerning our support for Atiku, same with all our state chapters in this matter.” “We hereby restate out position through this medium that AA as a certified and active member of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) have not for a moment reconsidered or wished to alter that position. Okorocha is, however, a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress. Udeze explained that the party’s decision to adopt Atiku Abubakar was under the CUPP agreement. “For your information, AA moved the motion for the adoption of Atiku as the Presidential Candidate of CUPP, and we are on it to the end,” Udeze said the support for Abubakar and his running mate, Peter Obi, was support for the growth of the country’s democracy and the required restructuring of the country. Okorocha formed the AA in 2005 and planned to run for president on its platform in the 2007 elections.

Barely 30 days to Nigeria’s presidential election, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday named technical advisers to its presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar. Nigerian lawmakers senator Ahmed Makarfi, Yakubu Dogara, deputy Senate president Ike Ekweremadu and former Jigawa State governor Mallam Sule Lamido were named technical advisers to Abubakar. Abubakar, a former vice president during the Olusegun Obasanjo administration from 1999 till 2007 is contesting the office of the president for the fourth time. Current Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2015 ended PDP’s 16 years of democratic rule in Nigeria after defeating then president Goodluck Jonathan. While the PDP seek a return to power, Buhari will be contesting the second term in office, making Buhari and Atiku at loggerheads during the February 16 presidential election

PoliticsWhy Buhari Deserves Second Term, By Ashafa by xgnx(op): 7:56am On Jan 09, 2019
A lawmaker representing Lagos East in the upper chamber of the National Assembly, Senator Gbenga Ashafa, has appealed to Nigerians to re-elect President Muhammadu Buhari and his vice, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, in the next general election. He said Nigerians should allow the incumbent a second term in office for the sake of continuity in the country; stressing that the 2019 elections would not only be free, fair and credible but would also be violence-free contrary expectations in some quarters. He said the administration of Buhari and Osinbajo set to work since 2015 trying to correct the monumental flaws in our polity, adding, “This government has brought us out of a recession foisted upon us due to years of monumental failure in governance at the centre. Gradually but surely, the incumbent administration has focused on completing critical infrastructure projects across the country with particular focus on rail, agriculture, power, works and housing as well as the fight against insurgency and corruption amongst others.” He said Buhari’s government has made tremendous achievements in social investment programmes and this is the first time in a long while, Nigerians have returned to ferrying people, goods and services on our revamped railway routes with several others nearing completion like the Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge line to be completed in 2019.On power generation, Ashafa also commended Buhari for having doubled power generation from 3,500 MW in 2015 to about 7,000 MW at the end of 2018. The lawmaker also appraised Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for consolidating on the work done by his predecessors, Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola, in ensuring that Lagos remains the leading light and centre of excellence. “ Now that the baton is about to be passed to Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the standard bearer of the party in the next governorship election, who has a proven track record of service and reform the task ahead of us in 2019 is to support him,” he said. The lawmaker also appealed to the electorate in Lagos East to ensure that the same spirit of continuity of effective representation continues by voting for Mr. Bayo Osinowo, who is the APC senatorial candidate in the zone for the 2019 election.
PoliticsI Didn't Order EFCC To Stop Investigating Akpabbion-buhari. by xgnx(op): 4:54pm On Jan 08, 2019
Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari said none of the ruling All Progressives Congress members or his close allies has immunity against corruption charges. “I don’t think I asked that Akpabio or whatever he did before moving to APC to be left alone. I can’t remember asking EFCC, ICPC or the police to spare any corrupt person,” Buhari said during an interview with Arise TV on Monday night “I haven’t done it, I challenge you to expose any,” he added. The president stated this while responding to a question on why the Economic Financial Crime Commission(EFCC) stopped investigating the former minority leader Godswill Akpabio after he joined the ruling party. Akpabio first came under investigation in late 2015 following accusations that he diverted over N100bn from the oil-rich state between 2007 and 2015, an allegation which he has denied. The EFCC wrote letters to Zenith Bank, Keystone Bank, First City Monument Bank, Skye Bank, and United Bank for Africa demanding information on the state’s accounts. The anti-graft agency also extended its investigation to the accountant-general, the auditor-general, the Speaker and the clerk of the House of Assembly. Following the allegations, the Akwa Ibom State Government refused to cooperate with the EFCC and took the commission to court and obtained an interim injunction, restraining the EFCC and other Federal Government agencies from probing its finances. Few months after, the judge lifted the injunction paving way for full investigations. But at his grand welcome rally in August, Akpabio said the anti-graft agency has cleared him of all corruption charges. “Those petitions to the EFCC have been sorted out. As I stand today, I have not been charged to court because nothing was found against me,” Akpabio said. EFC, however, responded through its spokesperson Wilson Uwujaren that the cases against Akpabio haven’t been closed. When asked if Akpabio was still under probe, the EFCC spokesperson said, “EFCC does not close cases or give clearance to anybody.”

PoliticsDriver Arrested For Allegedly Raping 78-year-old Woman. by xgnx(op): 4:12pm On Jan 08, 2019
Another remanded over seven-year-old child’s defilement The Lagos State police command has arrested a commercial bus driver, simply identified as Jelili, for allegedly raping a 78-year-old woman in an isolated area at Adeniyi Jones, Lagos State. The old woman was badly injured during the alleged rape and is presently receiving treatment in the hospital. The victim had missed her way and allegedly approached the suspect at Maryland, asking how to get to her destination in Ketu. The suspect reportedly promised to take the victim to her destination. The woman who was so happy joined the suspect in his bus, but on the way, the suspect drove the confused woman to a lonely place at Oloti village, off Adeniyi Jones, Ikeja and allegedly raped her without mercy. A police investor told The Guardian: “Jelili raped the woman severally, but the old woman did not easily give up as she kept shouting for help even though the suspect covered her mouth with dirty rag. A woman who overheard her shout for help made a distress call and we raced to the scene where we arrested the suspect. The woman was bleeding profusely.” Commissioner of Police, Lagos State police command, CP Imohimi Edgal, who paraded the suspect at the commanded headquarters, Ikeja, said the unfortunate incident occurred on New Year day. The police boss said at about 8:00p.m. the woman met one Jelili Lawal, aged 41, a bus driver, at Maryland, Ikeja and begged him for direction to Ketu as she was missing her way. Edgal said the victim has been taken to the hospital and is being counseled by trauma specialist. Meanwhile the suspect will be charged to court as soon as investigation is over. Edgal, who frowned at the attitude of the driver who took advantage of the old woman, disclosed that similarly on January 3, 2019, a report was made at Alakuko Police Station, that one Samuel Balogun, 17, of number 14, Ademola Aboila street, Alakuko, took a 12-year-old girl to an uncompleted building and had carnal knowledge of the child. He said Balogun was promptly arrested and he is undergoing interrogation at the gender section of the command, adding that the suspect would be charged to court for defilement at the conclusion of investigation. In a related development, a 34-year-old man, Tunde Eyifunjowo, who allegedly defiled a seven-year-old girl, was yesterday remanded in Kirikiri Prisons, on the orders of an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court. Eyifunjiwo, who resides at Ojodu, Lagos, was docked for alleged defilement. When the case was called up, the Magistrate, Mrs. B.O. Osunsanmi, refused to take the plea of the defendant. She ordered that the accused be kept behind bars pending legal advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). Earlier, ASP Ezekiel Ayorinde, the prosecutor, told the court that the accused committed the alleged offence sometime in November 2018 at his residence. He said that the accused defiled the seven- year-old daughter of his co- tenant. “The accused called the girl inside his room, gave her biscuit and had sexual intercourse with her. The girl who is living with her grandmother told her what the accused did to her. She told her grandmother that was the fourth time the accused would be having sexual intercourse with her. Her grandmother reported the case and the accused was arrested,” the prosecutor said. The offence violated Sections 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. The section prescribes life imprisonment for offenders. The case was adjourned until Jan. 21 for mention.

PoliticsBuhari Accepts Setbacks In Hoko Haram. by xgnx(op): 3:51pm On Jan 08, 2019
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has acknowledged setbacks in the fight against Boko Haram, as the jihadists launched fresh attacks in the restive northeast. The 76-year-old head of state was elected in 2015 on a promise to end the Islamist insurgency, which has killed more than 27,000 people since 2009 and left 1.8 million homeless. But as he seeks a second term in elections next month, a wave of attacks, including against military bases, has undermined his repeated claim that the group is virtually defeated. Soldiers have also complained that Boko Haram fighters are better armed and that morale is low, particularly because of a lack of rotation and support. In a recorded interview broadcast late on Monday on Arise TV, Buhari conceded that troops had come under pressure from the Islamists’ guerrilla warfare. Buhari, a former army general who became military ruler after ousting the elected government in a coup in 1983, said the “question of morale is correct”. Efforts were being made to address the issue, he said. Relentless hit-and-run raids, as well as suicide bomb attacks, were hard to deal with by conventional means, he argued. “There is really what I would call battle fatigue,” he said, adding that retraining would help combat the jihadists’ tactics. On Monday evening, fighters loyal to factional leader Abubakar Shekau attacked Sajeri village on the outskirts of the Borno state capital, Maiduguri, killing three people. At the same time, militants aligned to the Islamic State group-backed Boko Haram faction attacked a military facility in Auno, some 23 kilometres (15 miles) south of the city. The increase in attacks has seen the appointment of five different commanders of the military operation against Boko Haram in the last two years. But Buhari has refused to sack his military top brass, unlike his predecessor Goodluck Jonathan, who removed senior officers as the jihadists began taking over territory. “I accept responsibility for that,” Buhari said in the interview, adding that he was “measuring the options very critically”. But he said that such appointments were not to be taken lightly. “My understanding of security is that when you have a case of emergency you have to be careful with the head of (the armed) services,” he said.
