Nairaland GeneralAjaokuta Steel Company Loses 10 Worker Due To Lack Of Salaries by xlfemzy(op): 8:00am On May 31, 2010
The Ajaokuta Steel Rolling
Company has lost 10 workers
between March and April, 2010,
Abdulkareem Jimoh, Chairman,
Iron and Steel Senior Staff
Association of Nigeria (ISSAN),
has said.
Mr. Jimoh, who disclosed this in
an interview in Ajaokuta on
Thursday, said the workers died
of complications arising from a
lack of money to feed properly
and take care of their health.
He, therefore, appealed to the
Federal Government to urgently
pay salary arrears of staff and
members of the association.
The Federal Government still
owes the workers nine months
salary arrears after it paid 10
months arrears in 2009.
He also urged the Federal
Government to release money
for the running of the company,
saying “we are idle now. Let the
government take a good action.
The Thermal Power plant is
viable enough to generate
revenue.
``What we need is the political
will and financial enablement.
The workers are ready to turn
around the story of the
company and we shall not fail.’’
Also the Vice-Chairman of the
association, Akin Obafunmi, said:
“ Our workers are suffering. We
lose them almost every day.
“ We are planning to get money
for the burial of a staff now, yet
Festus Osagie from Operation
Department died on April 14.
“ We appeal to the Ministry of
Mines and Steel Development to
pay our salary. Our children
cannot go to school.
“ Many do not have anything to
eat. Some live on subsistence
farming within the complex. Life
is not easy here, ” he said.
The workers in Ajaokuta Steel
Company said they will, on April
20, protest the non-payment of
their nine months salary arrears.
He also alleged that the Federal
Government with the Interim
Management Committee were
not transparent in the dealing
with the workers.
``The bone of contention now is
the salary structure. We were
suddenly introduced to a
different salary structure
without being informed ”.
