https://allinsider.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/ca_0706NID_Polio_DRC_online-1024x576.jpg The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) has said that polio transmission is still active in Nigeria, adding that all necessary measures were needed to stop the disease. This came as a total of 17 cases of circulating poliovirus type 2, otherwise known as cVPV2, have been recorded so far this year. The Executive Director of NPHCDA, Dr. Muyi Aina, who stated this at the agency’s first quarter news conference in Abuja, said the number was as of April 10, 2025. The cases, he explained, were across 15 local government areas in eight states across the country. “Let me use this opportunity to reassure all Nigerians that we have remained WPV-free. However, since 2021, we have been contending with the challenge of the cVPV2 – another form of the virus that has mutated over time and started spreading. “As of April 10, 2025, we have recorded 17 CVPV2 cases across 15 LGAs in 8 states. 12 of the 17 cases are Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) cases, while 5 were found in Environmental Sites (ES). This shows that there is still active transmission of the virus in the country, which we need to stop. “We have therefore embarked on a strategic shift in critical components of the polio campaign, including vaccination team selection, demand generation, supervision, and accountability,” he said. He said the agency’s next polio campaign is scheduled to commence this Saturday, 26th April, in batches with the northern states, while the southern states will commence on May 3rd, also in batches. “The northern states will synchronise with our neighbouring countries in the Lake Basin. “Our Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Muhammad Ali Pate, joined his colleagues from the Lake Chad Basin countries (Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, and Niger) last week in N’Djamena, Chad, to launch the synchronised polio vaccination campaign. “The goal is to reach about 83 million children across these Lake Chad Basin countries,” he added Recall that in 2020, Nigeria was declared WPV free following the country’s successful eradication of the wild polio virus (WPV). The Police Command in Nasarawa State says it has neutralised a notorious kidnapper in Akwanga Local Government Area. SP Ramhan Nansel, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, disclosed this in a statement to journalists on Saturday in Lafia. He said the feat was achieved through a joint patrol team of its personnel, the army and local vigilantes, who neutralised the leader of a kidnapping and robbery gang operating in the area. “This achievement occurred on Friday, March 14, at about 10:00pm when security operatives tracked down the suspect, known as Honour. “He is a well-known armed robber and kidnapper who had been on the command’s wanted list for multiple offences. “He was intercepted near the Akwanga Central Mosque while riding a motorcycle and was fatally shot while attempting to evade arrest,” Nansel said. According to the police spokesman, items recovered during a search operation included one Beretta pistol without a bridge number and 12 rounds of 9mm live ammunition. The PPRO added that one of his accomplices managed to escape with gunshot wounds, while a manhunt is currently underway to apprehend the fleeing suspect. He said that the deceased had been evacuated to the Akwanga General Hospital Mortuary for post-mortem examination. Nansel said that Shetima Jauro-Mohammed, Commissioner of Police commended the operatives for their professional conduct and effective collaboration. He urged them to maintain the momentum in the ongoing fight against criminal elements in the state. The spokesman therefore, reiterated the command’s commitment to maintaining law and order and warned all criminals to desist from their nefarious activities or face decisive action. (NAN). Episode 2. (My first Day in School) I was about to enter the school premises before i got interrupted by this group of boys, i saw group of boys gathered at the extreme end of the school fence, they ordered me to come, when i got there they requested to know my name, my name is James Oliver i answered them with a load of fear on my face. The boys were not looking good at all, they were all smoking and drinking alcohol, i cannot even behold there faces. One of the boys putting on a red cap stood up and asked me another irritating question,…What have you come to do in this school? I answered with a chicken heart….I have no other purpose of being here sir, and what is the purpose? he asked,….”I came to learn” i replied him. After much interrogations, they introduced their selves to me one after the other, i came to understand that they belong to a secret cult. The leader of the gang introduced himself as Jackson A.K.A Capon, he told me that he has been in this school for years and if i want to graduate in peace then i must join them, he told me how he have wasted the life of many students that refused to join them, he said he will give me time to go and think about it but i should remember that their eyes are on me. He was speaking in proverbs, i could not even capture some of the things he was saying, they have a different language or may i call it slance. They asked me to buy them drinks before they will let me go, i told them that i dont have much money with me but i left them with a promise that i will buy the drink next time i see them. I was feeling very uncomfortable and i have not seen people of that kind, one of them drew closer to me and hit me on my head, he said that my life is in their hands and if i fail to comply with them, i will have myself to blame. The name of this group was “The Black Devils”, they told me that forgiveness is a sin and mercy is a taboo, this simply means that its impossible for them to forgive anyone and they are not ready to show mercy to anyone that trespassed against them. As i was about leaving, i have walked about 2 kilometers away from their chamber, one of them called me back and this terrible thing happened.
