Politics / Orji's Son Emerges Abia Majority Leader by Xplicitunechi(m): 10:03am On Jun 16, 2015
Mr. Chinedu Orji, the son of the immediate past
Governor of Abia State, Theodore Orji, has
emerged the Majority Leader of the Abia State
House of Assembly.

The Speaker of the House, Martins Azubuike,
disclosed this on Monday during a courtesy visit to
Governor Okezie Ikpeazu.

Azubuike, while introducing his colleagues to
Ikpeazu, said Abraham Oba, an All Progressive
Grand Alliance lawmaker representing Aba-Central,
was the Minority Leader.

He also said Tony Nwubani, a Peoples Democratic
Party lawmaker representing Ukwa-West
constituency, was the Majority Whip, while the
Minority Whip was Chibuzor Okogbue, an APGA
lawmaker representing Bende-South constituency.

A PDP lawmaker, Mr. Cosmos Ndukwe,
representing Bende-North was elected as the
Deputy Speaker during the inauguration of the
House last Thursday. The House comprises 13
PDP members and 11 APGA members.

In his remarks, the governor thanked the
lawmakers for the peaceful manner they
conducted their election despite their party
differences, and promised to work with them in the
best interest of the state.

On the insecurity in some parts of the state,
Ikpeazu said he had concluded plans to submit a
bill to the state House of Assembly in order to
establish a Security Trust Fund.

Ikpeazu said his administration would fight crime
with technology, adding that plans were underway
to mount Close Circuit Televisions on the streets to
monitor movements of people in the state.

Meanwhile, Ikpeazu has inaugurated Chief Ume
Kalu as the state’s Attorney General and
Commissioner for Justice, the same office he
(Kalu) occupied during the tenure of Orji.

Kalu is the only commissioner appointed by
Ikpeazu since he assumed office on May 29.

Ikpeazu, who has yet to move into the Government
House, Umuahia, has only appointed a few special
advisers and special assistants.

Crime / Fraudster Arraigned For Duping American Through Facebook by Xplicitunechi(m): 8:37pm On Jun 15, 2015
THE Economic and Financial Crimes Commission
(EFCC), on Monday, arraigned Ebiechina
Chikeluba before Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye of the
High Court of Lagos State, Ikeja, on a 17-count
charge of obtaining money by false pretense,
impersonation, forgery and using false
document.

Chikeluba allegedly met his victim on Facebook
using the false identity of Lisa T. Jackson, a
United States citizen, has been making
monetary demands of his victims, using various
guises.

The prosecutor said Ebiechina obtained a total of
£54,324.59 from one K. Oaks through Western
Union Money Transfer on the pretext that he
was an American woman dealing in Gold in
Nigeria and needed money to boost her
business.

The unsuspecting victim paid, having already
agreed to marry the conman.
When the charges were read to the defendant,
he pleaded not guilty.

In view of the plea of the accused, prosecution
counsel, Andrew Akoja, asked for a trial date and
prayed the court to remand the defendant in
prison.

Justice Ipaye adjourned the matter till July 20.

Politics / Stakeholders Meet Senate, Begins Fuel Lifting Today by Xplicitunechi(m): 3:26pm On May 25, 2015
Stakeholders in the petroleum sector, at a public
hearing organised by the Joint Senate Committee
on Petroleum Resources(Upstream and
Downstream), on Monday resolved to mobilise
their members for the immediate distribution of fuel
across the country.

Senator Magnus Abe, who read a communique
signed by the stakeholders after the session,
explained that the Finance Minister/Coordinating
Minister for the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-
Iweala, and other stakeholders, who attended the
meeting, unanimously agreed to the peace deal, in
the interest of the nation.

He also explained that following the intervention of
the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian
National Petroleum Corporation, the strike
embarked upon by the National Union of Petroleum
and Natural Gas Workers and the Petroleum and
Energy Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, had
been called off.

He said, “We have agreed on the following: first is
that the Minister of Finance will give an undertaking
to the Major Marketers and Depot Managers that
the work of the committee being headed by CBN
and PPPR, on the outstanding claims, would be
concluded and be reflected in the hand over notes
to the incoming administration.”

The Senator said the Major Oil Marketers
Association of Nigeria had agreed to begin lifting of
petroleum products nationwide within the next six
hours and to also pay the National Association of
Road Transport Owners, the transport cost that
would be determined by them.

He added that the Depot Managers had agreed to
open all their depots nationwide so that lifting
would commence and had agreed with the DPR to
withdraw the operational licence of any depot
which was not opened for fuel lifting.

Abe said the NNPC had directed all relevant staff,
working in the various depots across the country,
to work 24 hours, including Saturday and Sunday,
for the next two weeks until normalcy returns to
the sector.

He explained that the committee would reach out to
the Lagos State Government on the agreement
reached and the need for their contribution towards
ensuring smooth lifting of fuel in all the depots.

Politics / Ireland Votes To Approve Gay Marriage by Xplicitunechi(m): 6:21am On May 24, 2015
Ireland became the first
nation to approve same-sex marriage
by a popular vote, sweeping aside the
opposition of the Roman Catholic
Church in a resounding victory
Saturday for the gay rights movement
and placing the country at the
vanguard of social change.

With the final ballots counted, the
vote was 62 percent in favor of
legalizing same-sex marriage , and 38
percent opposed.

The turnout was large — more than
60 percent of the 3.2 million eligible
voters cast ballots, and only one
district out of 43 voted the measure
down. Cheers broke out among the
crowd of supporters who had
gathered in the courtyard of Dublin
Castle when Returning Officer Riona
Ni Fhlanghaile announced around 7
p.m. that the ballot had passed,
1,201,607 votes to 734,300.

Webmasters / Top 12 Websites To Drive Traffic To Your Blog by Xplicitunechi(m): 9:44pm On May 16, 2015
Social Media websites can drive insanely great traffic to your blog if you have a good social media marketing strategy. But it can drive fair amount of traffic if you just submit blog posts regularly to your social media profiles.
Social media traffic is as important as organic traffic from search engines as we can’t rely on Google alone. They continue to push algorithmic updates like Panda, Penguin and who knows the next could be Giraffe.

It means that we must diversify the way we get traffic. I’m going to list the top social media and other websites that you shouldn’t ignore or must use as part of your social media marketing strategy. I’m NOT going to list all the stupid social media or the so called web 2.0 sites out there as I’m going to focus only on sites that can drive traffic to our websites in one way or the other and not for building backlinks.

1. FACEBOOK(Google Page Rank:9 | Alexa Rank 2)

Facebook has not only transformed the way people the world over connect, communicate and share ideas, pictures, videos and news, it’s made it possible for businesses to get their products across to a mass audience in a sensational win-win manner.

With over a billion active users it’s the largest social networking website. Leverage your Facebook friends and share your blog posts regularly with your Facebook friends and fan base.

2. TWITTER(Google Page Rank 10 | Alexa Rank 11)

Twitter is the second most popular social network (microblogging platform to be more specific). If our content is viral in nature then it can bring instant massive traffic to our blog/website in no time.

3. LINKEDIN(Google Page Rank 9 | Alexa Rank 12)

LinkedIn is web’s favorite professional networking website with over 100 million active users. LinkedIn’s traffic quality is better than that of Facebook and Twitter as it is mostly used by professionals who are looking for job or business opportunities.

4. PINTEREST(Google Page Rank 9 | Alexa Rank 28)

Pinterest is the biggest thing that happened to social media after Twitter. According to a TechCrunch article Pinterest drives more traffic than Google+, YouTube and LinkedIn combined. If your blog posts have quality images then you shouldn’t ignore Pinterest. Just pin those images to Pinterest under the right category and it can send quality traffic to you as Pinterest users are known to spend more money than Facebook or Twitter.

5. GOOGLE+(Google Page Rank 9 | Alexa Rank 1)

Google+ is Google’s answer to Facebook. Though they call it a social network I wouldn’t call it a social networking website. But that said, it is important to share your blog posts on Google+ as social signals are now used to rank web pages. And that’s not all! As you probably know Google now gives importance to authors (dubbed as AuthorRank). For that they use data from your Google+ profiles. It means that if you’re popular on Google+ then your blog posts are more likely to be on top.

6. REDDIT(Google Page Rank 8 | Alexa Rank 73)

Reddit succeeded where Digg failed. It’s not the Facebook or a Twitter that killed Digg, Reddit killed Digg. If you write content that’s viral in nature then Reddit can send you instant massive traffic. Just make sure that you use social media timing signals to share the right content at the right time.

7. STUMBLEUPON(Google Page Rank 8 | Alexa Rank 157)

StumbleUpon is more or less a social bookmarking platform. It used to send good traffic during my initial days of blogging. I’m not sure about how many active users are there on StumbleUpon but according to Wikipedia they have over 20 million users. It won’t take more than 5 minutes to share your web page on StumbleUpon and hence it is worth the try. You definitely don’t want to miss even a single opportunity that can send traffic.

8. HUBPAGES(Google Page Rank 6 | Alexa Rank 534)

HubPages is yet another user generated content, and revenue-sharing website where you can share your advice, reviews, useful tips, opinions and insights with hundreds of other authors. Quality HubPages articles are ranked high on Google so it can send you traffic if you write and submit good articles to HubPages with links to your website.

9. SLIDESHARE(Google Page Rank 8 | Alexa Rank 123)

SlideShare, as you probably know, is the world’s largest community for sharing and discovering slideshows/presentations. You can upload your presentations with clickable links and can even embed them on blogs or websites. Apart from slideshows, you can also share documents, infographics, PDFs, videos, and webinars.

10. WIKIPEDIA(Google Page Rank 9 | Alexa Rank 6)

Who doesn’t know about Wikipedia? A platform that shares over 24 million articles, Wikipedia is by now the largest place from where you can get references. Wikipedia can drive quality referral traffic to your website. Just sign up as a contributor at Wikipedia and improve the current Wiki pages by editing the existing pages with reference to your website. Just make sure that your web page is absolutely relevant to the topic or it will be marked as spam by the moderators at Wikipedia.

11. YOUTUBE(Google Page Rank 9 | Alexa Rank 3)

YouTube is the web’s largest and most favorite video sharing website. You can share your videos with over 800 million YouTube users a month. You can host your how-to videos on YouTube with a backlink to your website so that people would visit your website for additional insights whenever they watch your video.

12. FLICKR(Google Page Rank 9 | Alexa Rank 74)

Flickr is the largest photo sharing website on the Internet. You can leverage Flickr by uploading interesting photos or videos with a Creative Commons Attribution License. So that people will link to your Flickr profile and may click on your links. Don’t want to upload photos? Then why not use those awesome photos on your blog and still get referral traffic. Just use the photos or videos with a Creative Commons Attribution License in your next blog post with proper credits to the original author. Then go to their Flickr profile and comment that you have used the same on your blog post and include the link to the blog post.
Politics / BREAKING : I’m Done With Party Politics Here On Earth And In Heaven - Obasanjo by Xplicitunechi(m): 7:42pm On May 14, 2015
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has rebuffed
repeated pleas from concerned member of the
Peoples Democratic Party to help revive the party
following its defeat in the March 28 presidential
election.

President Goodluck Jonathan, who flew the PDP
flag in the March 28 election, lost to his All
Progressives Congress challenger, Muhammadu
Buhari, a former military head of state.
The party, which has ruled Nigeria since the return
of democracy 16 years ago, also lost its majority
status in the National Assembly just as it won a
fewer number of states unlike in the past election.
With the defeat, the ruling party will now take on
the opposition role as from May 29 when Mr.
Jonathan hands over power to Mr. Buhari.

Since the defeat, the party’s senior members have
been bickering with one another with some
demanding the exit of its National Chairman,
Adamu Mu’azu and other officers, who are
accused of working against the party during the
election.

Concerned about the future of the party, some of
its leaders have been reaching out to Mr. Obasanjo
to return to the party and help build it ahead of
future elections.
The former president had in February directed a
fellow PDP member and ward leader to openly tear
his party membership card at a forum in Abeokuta,
the Ogun State capital.

PREMIUM TIMES gathered that among those
persuading him to return to lead the party were
serving governors and federal lawmakers who
believed the party should play viable opposition in
the next dispensation.
Mr. Obasanjo’s close allies said the anxious party
men have been pressuring the former leader, who
was the first elected president on the party’s
platform, by either visiting him or through telephone
calls.

This newspaper learnt that the former president,
who was also the PDP leader and Chairman of its
Board of Trustees, has repeatedly rebuffed the
request to return to the party.
Sources close to him said at some point he told
those mounting pressure on him that rather than
returning to the party he would encourage viable
opposition from other standpoints.

“I’m done with party politics here on earth and in
heaven. Period,” Mr. Obasanjo was overheard
telling a PDP chieftain who telephoned him recently
to raise the matter.
Mr. Obasanjo was also said to have told some
people pressuring him that he could have
considered returning to the party had his
membership card not been publicly thorn before
the general elections.

He was quoted as saying his membership card has
been shredded and that “as it is now, a goat has
eaten up the pieces”.
Mr. Obasanjo confirmed to PREMIUM TIMES in a
telephone interview that he has been under
pressure to return to the PDP but vowed not to do
so.
“I’m not ready to discuss partisan politics because
I’m done with it,” he said.

After a meeting with Mr. Jonathan sometime in
February, the outgoing governor of Jigawa State,
Sule Lamido, had assured that the PDP would beg
Mr. Obasanjo to return to the party.
“When a father is angry with his children, the
children should beg him. Baba is more than a party
man. He is an icon, a national symbol and a leader
and inventor, a creator of all the institutions today
in Nigeria from the president to the governors, who
are his own sons, are all his creations.”

“And so when a father is angry with his children,
we will only say we are sorry to him. But then, we
cannot be renounced for whatever it is…….We
might have made some mistakes, but abandoning
us is not the solution because the country is first
before anything else. So, he is our Baba even up to
the president.”

But Mr. Obasanjo told PREMIUM TIMES he has
foreclosed any possibility of returning to the PDP.
“I agree that Nigeria needs a strong and viable
opposition and I will continue to encourage that,”
the former President said. “I will continue to do that
even without belonging to a political party. I have
moved beyond party politics.”

Celebrities / Footballer Chichi Igbo Writes On Why She Stopped Playing For Super Falcons by Xplicitunechi(m): 2:47pm On May 14, 2015
The footballer (circled in the pic below) took to her instagram page to write on why she stopped playing for the
national female team. According to her, ill treatment on the girls and the "monkey dey work bamboo dey chop"
syndrome made her throw in the towel.
Read what she wrote below ...

"I really miss my girls but definitely not the bullshit, I hope the monkey dey work baboon dey chop business
have changed cos our girls deserve much better, it's crazy how people can keep quite when we know
nothing is right about the treatment those girls get, they are doing way better than the male team but what do
they get? I don't fuss about Nigerians n their bullshit cos we've never gotten along from day 1 and I doubt
that's ever gon change and I'm cool with that.
Nigeria is a country where people kiss ass and don't stand for their rights cos they are meant to believe they
don't have one but here comes Chi-chi the no BS taker, I knew I wouldn't last on the national team cos I
don't take bs from nobody and I smelled that immediately I walked in.
I was the youngest on the team during my time but I knew and stood on my rights cos I knew nobody from
the federation to threaten me of dropping me, (which is the reason most of the girls don't speak up and I
can't say I blame them) I merited every call up so know I spoke up when shit wasn't right.
It wasn't just about the money but the treatment, they'd train us like animals but deprive us of our rights, no
respect whatsoever common now. Things won't change until light is shone on what's really going on and I'm
here with my torchlight I fear no man but the most high. Here is your answer
For those asking why I stopped reping the green white green jersey. You wouldn't know until you been there,
it may be ok to most but a big NO for me cos I know my worth. Canada 2015 is just around the corner, I'm
rooting for you girls all the way, go make us proud as always. May God continue to strengthen and protect
y'all as you serve your country whole heartedly."

Politics / Nigeria Army Imposes Curfew On Maiduguri Following Boko Haram Attack by Xplicitunechi(m): 9:52am On May 14, 2015
The Nigeria army Thursday imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on the restive northeastern town of Maiduguri in the aftermath of a Boko Haram attack on the city, a military statement said.

“In view of the recent development within Maiduguri metropolis a 24-hour curfew is hereby imposed in the city,” army spokesman Colonel Tanko Gusau said in the statement.

“This is done to protect lives and properties of innocent and law-abiding people of Maiduguri,” capital of Borno state.

Boko Haram fighters launched an attack on the city on Wednesday ‎but were repelled by Nigerian troops after intense clashes, residents and the army have said.

Dozens of militants armed with heavy guns and rocket-propelled grenades stormed the northern outskirts of the city near Giwa military base, shooting and firing explosives indiscriminately, local witnesses told AFP.

The army said in a statement its soldiers had fought off “a band of terrorists” and that two bombs carried by female suicide bombers were detonated ahead of the attack.

There was no immediate information on any casualties.

The assault was the first on Maiduguri after a three-month lull following sweeping offensives on Boko Haram strongholds by a regional coalition of troops from Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon.

Sources said the assailants had made attempts to overrun a military facility, the 21 armoured brigade, which was attacked last March 14.

The army said that the situation was now under control

A member of the civilian vigilantes‎ assisting the Nigerian military in the fight against Boko Haram said the attack could have been a reprisal for the losses incurred by the extremists in a Tuesday offensive on their camp some 40 kilometres (25 miles) outside the city.

“The attack was from all indication in response to the huge casualties Boko Haram suffered yesterday in the military operation on their camp in Mafa area ‎in which some women and children were rescued,” said the vigilante who asked not to be named.

Politics / Buhari, Derby Discuss Strategies To End Boko Haram by Xplicitunechi(m): 5:41am On May 13, 2015
President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, and the
President of Chad, Idriss Derby, on Monday, held a
closed door meeting to discuss strategies by which
the Boko Haram insurgency could be ended.

The meeting which held at the Defence House,
Abuja, provided an opportunity for the two leaders
to discuss other issues of mutual interests.
After the meeting, Buhari told reporters that Chad,
Niger and Cameroon had been helping Nigeria to
secure its borders and that the meeting was based
on security as well ways of enhancing commerce
and industry.

He said, “Due to the insurgency attacks, some of
the bridges were blown up while infrastructures
were destroyed. These were some of things that
we discussed and God willing, when our
government is in place, we will sit and make sure
we have a comprehensive review of the security
situation in the North-East and how it affects the
country.”

Earlier, Derby, who spoke through an interpreter,
said he was in Nigeria to congratulate the Nigerian
people and the President-elect for successfully
holding an election which was a positive example
for the rest of Africa.
He said, “Nigeria and Chad are two countries with
one people. We have many things in common, a
long tradition and a long history together. In this
sense, the visit here is to meet with the President-
elect and at the same time to congratulate
President (Goodluck) Jonathan and to enhance the
bilateral relations aimed at meeting the common
challenges.”

The Chadian leader also said the meeting was in
continuation of the relationship between the two
countries, which discussed issues of common
perspectives.
He said, “Chad and Nigeria are facing the same
challenges and how to meet the expectations of
the people. Both countries are members of the
Lake Chad Basin Commission and the two
countries, together with other members are
