Yes... In trying to communicate, he ends up 'speaking in tongues'

Go and enrol that boy is school sir and be playing lots of nursery rhymes for him . Nothing is wrong with him and you will be surprised by the time he start talking grin grin grin

That's how my friends child refused to walk at 18 months and hates to be made to stand talkless of encouraging him to walk, the boy will be crying ni but he knew everyone's name at that point and he will be shouting our names . They just woke up one day and saw him walking ni
This is his second year in school. There's definitely some lag because of the communication issues but he's started writing numbers and some letters now.

He's growing up well generally and doesn't show any sign of deformity except for the speech/language issues

I know this is an old thread but from my observations, despite advise given to have your child medically checked, you have not responded to any of those as to whether you've sought such interventions, it is okay to be positive that children develop differently, however what harm could medically checking out the child do? Won't you rather he is given the all clear medically and you know it is just a waiting game for when he is ready to talk? Your initial post was made when the child was 2, if he is almost 4 years old and the same issue persists, I will suggest you conduct all checks (his hearing, his tongue and even other mental development checks). Has he started school yet or his siblings are still the only children he interacts with?
Thank you for this; we have done hearing tests and all that you mentioned and nothing was seen to be wrong.

He's almost 4 now, growing up well/normal but still can't speak. He has an android tablet and he has mastered all the games and apps on it and play them like a pro - at least he's cognitive is good (for me).

The other good part is, he mixes and plays well with his siblings and they seem to understand him even without him voicing out his words.

I have a similar situation, is your child talking now
No he hasn't started talking yet, but he continues to grow and develop normal with no signs of disability or deformity - so we are consoled by that and have given him all the time and love he needs to learn to speak/language on his own pace.

Just like us, be hopeful that yours will speak too, at his/her own time. Thanks
FamilyRe: Help, My 2 Year Old Does Not Talk Yet. by Xundi73(op): 6:02pm On Jan 08, 2021
Unfortunately he hasn't improved yet on issue of speaking but he grows and develops normal, so we are being patient until he is 3 years.

Thanks for checking on us.

Scientifically, a child has ability to learn and speak up to 5 languages while growing up. Although, it is recommended that we speak our indigenous language to our children as they are genetically inclined towards it...However, 2 years is too early to be worried about a child speaking, I will advise youw wait till he is 4 years old before being bordered..If at this time he is nt speaking, then you can consider speech therapist
Thanks

Didn't you see where he said the boy is smart? The DNA is required perhaps because that trait does not run in his family.
DNA testing is required if he suspects the child might not be his but not because of what you typed.

Do you know all the traits that has ran in your family lineage dating back to say 5 to 10 generations past?

Do you understand what is meant when someone is said to carry a recessive trait?

How much do you know about genetics?

Thanks for commenting.

Enrolling him in a school should help him talk. I believe he knows a lot about what to say because when he does start talking, it will all come rushing out. But he is just taking his time.

Please let madam stop worrying. It might be his nature not to talk much. But whatever the case, he will be fine
Thank you so much.

It is normal for parents to worry especially when it comes to their children. So don't let anyone here fault you for being concerned.

From what I have seen, children develop differently; when they start growing teeth, walking, talking, etc. My cousin's daughter walked at 10 months, grew teeth vcgudaughter was over a year when she walked and her first set of teeth came out at 11months...lol. But one thing my daughter was fast in was talking. She talked before she walked. By 2, she was a talkative.

I am sure your son developed fast in some other areas but is just taking a longer time to talk. But if you are not convinced, you should consult with a paediatrician to get a professional view.
Thank you, his all-round development is impeccable. He walked at 11 months, he has grown almost full set of child-teeth and seems tall for his age. Just his lack of interest to learn to talk or even blab

His ability to say bye and to move to dance when he hears songs he likes has made us rule out deafness or being mute (dumb).

I have encouraged the mother to worry less, let him take as much time as he needs and when school reopens we will enroll him into school before worrying about possible deformity if he still doesn't want talk when he is more than 3 years

Thank you. This is why the mother is worried, he is not very interested in talking or wanting to talk. We will continue to try out your suggestions.

Stop worrying. My friend's kid didn't start talking until he was almost three, and that was because he started creche at that age. The week he started, everyone was called 'aunty' (including his mum and dad). By the following week he had added more words to his vocab. My baby is 12 now and a talkative who only keeps silent when he is asleep.
This is very encouraging. Thanks a whole lot

Too early to worry over nothing, some kids take their time especially boys, he can say bye and u are still worried? My cousin couldn't even talk when he was 3, his cry is unnoticed as well, u will just c tears, everyone worried too. But d guy is big now, smart and intelligent, and preparing for tertiary sch. Baby Girls tends to be faster when they are little.
I think you are right about female babies talking sooner than male babies

Same issue I'm faced with my 27months old boy... All his older siblings started running their mouths well before 12 months, but his best is "Da-a" (Daddy), and "..iss" (yes).
Dude is extremely smart: hears well, understands perfectly, carrys out instructions, can identify MOST parts of his body, can identify about 8 colours, all digits (0 - 9) and ALL letters of the English alphabet (thanks to big Bro).

His Mom ain't bothered one bit but worry wan finish me.
Well, I've scheduled a session with his Ped for next week, to avoid future stories that touch.

TBH, I'm considering DNA too (funny-frowns)
Why DNAhuh

At two years its too early to get worried anyway, let him start mixing up with other kids and the challenges he will be getting will stir him up
Thanks for your words. He has older siblings and the pandemic has delayed his being enrolled into school.

Trust me, you don't have anything to worry about. My daughter did us shege before she started walking. We took her for check up and the Ped confirmed that nothing was wrong with her. We have about 4 walkers for her alone just to train her. She would not use any of them, she would rather sleep on the floor. But now, she runs around scattering the whole house. So, for your son, a time will come you will tell him to be quiet for a while. Trust me.
Thanks. This is encouraging.

Nothing is wrong with your son, he is just living in his own world and he is enjoying it.
Thanks.
When he wants something, he pulls the nearest person by the hand, lead you to where the item is and points, when you ask what he wants and he perceives you are waiting for him to make a sound, he gets very frustrated.

The other one, 3 years old can not read and write.

This one, 2 years old can not say anything aside "bye".

It seems you all expect your children to be Albert Einstein right from the womb.
LOL, thank you for your comment. That's not our expectation. The worry part stems from his lack of interest is trying to produce a sound or even blabbering except for bye, ampu for daddy and mei for mommy. He would rather not make any sound or show interest in listening when you try to talk to him or get him to do anything.

Im sorry to ask this question sir.

Hope there is no difference in the spoken English accent you both speak at home?
This may cause confusion also.

But sincerely, if your son isn’t deaf and dumb, he will still talk. Just give him the time, the boy is just 2years for goodness sake
No accents except Nigerian accent smiley
Thank you for your words

Because you see that your fellow counterpart's thread was moved to front page, you now remember that your 2 year old can't talk abi?

Do you expect your toddler to speak perfect diction? Leave that child alone, not all 2 year olds is expected to say out complete sentences.
Thanks for your comments.
1. I just registered today, I have used nairaland as a guest member for some time.
2. I opened this to seek opinions to calm the wife's mind. I'm not at all worried like her. I myself didn't stand or walk until I was more than a year old.
3. I don't expect perfect diction or a sentence from him. If you read our worries objectively you'd have seen the part that I mentioned he is not interested in talking or making efforts at all.

Again thanks for your comment
