Justice Ibrahim Mohammed Tanko has passed away. The former Chief Justice of Nigeria died in a hospital in Saudi Arabia where he was receiving treatment marking the end of a long and also controversial judicial career.
News of his death have gotten Nigerians reacting to what legacy he has left behind.

The Nigerian Association of Muslim Law Students (NAMLAS), National Headquarters, Abuja, also confirmed the death in an official condolence message dated December 16, 2025.

The association described his passing as a major loss to the Nigerian judiciary and the nation as a whole.

“Indeed, to Allah we belong and to Him we shall return,” the statement read.

NALMAS described Justice Tanko as man of complete integrity, humility and moral character whose years on the bench were characterized by respect for the rule of law. Justice Tanko was also described as a mentor to young Muslim law students across the country.


Justice Ibrahim Mohammed Tanko was born on December 1953 and was appointed a Supreme Court Judge in 2006. It is important to note that Justice Ibrahim Mohammed Tanko succeeded Walter Onnoghen who was unceremoniously removed by President Muhammadu Buhari for issues relating to corruption and himself was forced to resign his position as Chief Justice in 2022 for misappropriation of funds meant for judges.


Tanko's biggest Controversy as Chief Justice


It was in January 2020 when Justice Ibrahim Tanko presided over the election case of Governor of Imo State Emeka Ihedioha. Tanko was the head of the bench that saw the Governor sacked from office just 7 months into his reign in a very controversial judgement many Nigerians still cannot fathom.

Four Aspirants were in contention to be Governor. Uche Nwosu ( AA) who was the son in law of the incumbent Governor Rochas Okorocha, Ifeanyi Ararume ( APGA) Hope Uzodinmma ( APC) and Emeka Ihedioha ( PDP )

INEC said Mr Ihedioha polled 273,404 ahead of his closest rival and candidate of the Action Alliance, Uche Nwosu, who the electoral body said scored 190,364 votes.

By the INEC result, the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Ifeanyi Ararume, came third ahead of Hope Uzondinma of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The former polled 114, 676 while the latter polled 96,458. A total of 70 candidates representing various political parties took part in the election.

Mr Uzodinma had challenged the declaration of Mr Ihedioha as the winner, saying he actually won the election. He lost at the election petition tribunal and the appeal court.

But in a dramatic turn of events the Supreme Court led by Justice Ibrahim Mohammed Tanko declared Hope Uzodinmma as the winner despite coming 4th on the INEC table.

The Supreme Court ordered that a fresh Certificate of Return should be issued to Uzodinma forthwith, adding that he should be sworn in immediately as the governor of Imo state

The lead judgement was delivered by Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, while other members of the panel concurred.

It held that records before it proved that election results from 388 polling units were unlawfully excluded from the overall collated results.

It noted that results from the cancelled polling units amounted to 213, 295 votes, adding that Ihedioha was returned elected, based on wrong computation of results.

While INEC had assumed Ihedioha to be the winner of the election. It was Tanko's abracadabra that justified the Bible verse from Matthew 20:16

" For the first shall be the last and the last shall be the first. In one of the greatest absurdities of court judgements Hope Uzodinmma who had already accepted his loss graciously was awakened to life when there was a plot by the ruling party APC to capture a South East state by hook or by crook.

Justice Tanko very well did his job maneuvering his judicial bench into giving a ridiculous judgement that has never been seen in Nigeria's history before. Perhaps Tanko's end being shredded with a corruption case is proof of his calamitous acts. Justice Tanko may have gotten away with it on earth but now he is dead he will have to answer to his maker how he miraculously made Hope Uzodinmma Governor. May Allah forgive him his sins and ignore his shortcomings. Amen

Dangote Group CEO’s criticism of the Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Farouk Ahmed is over the regulator’s refusal of a proposed 15 percent levy on petrol, this newspaper found out.

The Dangote Group has launched a campaign against the NMDPRA chief, probing his personal life and alleging corruption but its been gathered that the attack is to force the regulator’s hands to levy petrol, which would help put Dangote refinery’s competitors out of business.

The proposed levy, if implemented, would have pushed the pump price of petrol beyond ₦1,000 per litre, significantly increasing the financial burden on Nigerians already struggling with high living costs. The levy was rejected by regulators and the Federal Government, with President Bola Tinubu declining to approve it.

Farouk Ahmed has since come under criticism from interests opposed to the decision, with observers linking the attacks to disagreements over pricing control in Nigeria’s post-subsidy fuel market. Officials familiar with the matter say the NMDPRA maintained that introducing the levy at this time would have worsened inflation and transport costs nationwide.

Speaking on the issue, energy analyst, Dr. Philips Emmanuel said the regulator’s position was consistent with the realities of the Nigerian economy.

“Adding a 15 percent levy to petrol right now would have been catastrophic for consumers,” Emmanuel said. “The regulator was right to push back. Nigeria is still adjusting to subsidy removal, and sudden price shocks would only deepen hardship.”

Since the removal of fuel subsidies, Nigeria has faced supply challenges, including limited local refining capacity and logistical constraints. To address this, the NMDPRA has relied on a combination of local supply and strategic imports to ensure fuel availability and avoid prolonged shortages.

The disagreement follows debates over Dangote’s fuel quality and market dominance.

An exclusive report by Politics Nigeria revealed that diesel produced by Dangote Refinery had higher sulphur levels than initially presented to lawmakers, raising concerns about environmental and engine safety standards.

Dangote Group has denied the claims, insisting its diesel meets international standards and arguing that some imported fuels enter Nigeria with questionable certifications. The company has also invited regulators to independently test its products.

While the Dangote Refinery is widely regarded as a strategic national asset expected to reduce fuel imports, analysts caution against allowing excessive market concentration.

Concerns have been raised by industry watchers who point to the cement sector, where Dangote Cement controls a significant share of the market. Critics also argue that limited competition in that sector has contributed to persistently high prices, a situation they warn could be replicated in the fuel market without firm regulation.

Addressing personal allegations made against Farouk Ahmed, government officials have stated that lifestyle claims do not amount to evidence of misconduct. They stressed that any substantiated allegations should be presented to security agencies for investigation.

For now, officials say the decision to reject the 15 percent petrol levy was taken in the interest of economic stability and public welfare. They warn that pushing fuel prices above ₦1,000 per litre could have triggered widespread economic disruption.
