One of the biggest questions facing any democracy is not whether leaders make mistakes.

It is whether leaders face consequences when serious allegations arise.

The issue goes beyond one politician.

It goes beyond one political party.

It goes beyond one state.

At its heart is a simple question:

What message does a country send when powerful people appear able to continue their political careers while serious cases against them remain unresolved?

The Yahaya Bello example

Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello remains one of Nigeria’s most prominent political figures despite ongoing corruption cases filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The EFCC is prosecuting Bello in separate cases involving allegations of money laundering, criminal breach of trust and financial misconduct amounting to tens of billions of naira. Bello has pleaded not guilty to the charges and the cases remain before the courts.

In June 2026, an Abuja court dismissed Bello’s attempt to stop one of the trials and ordered proceedings to continue.

Yet despite the legal battles, Bello continues to remain politically relevant.

That reality raises uncomfortable questions.

Accountability is not the same as allegations

To be fair, being accused is not the same as being guilty.

Under Nigerian law, every defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court.

That principle protects citizens from false accusations and political persecution.

People start asking:

Do the rules apply equally?
Are powerful people treated differently?
Does accountability exist only for ordinary citizens?
Whether those perceptions are fair or unfair, they can damage public confidence.

The message sent to future leaders

Politics often teaches lessons.

When leaders see that serious controversies have little impact on political careers, some may conclude that public accountability is not essential.

That can create a culture where reputation matters less than political survival.

The result is a system where politicians focus more on retaining power than earning public trust.

The danger for democracy

Democracy depends on consequences.

Not necessarily prison.

Not necessarily convictions.

But consequences.

Leaders should know that citizens are watching.

They should know that performance matters.

Hundreds of youths yesterday staged a peaceful protest in Potiskum Local Government Area of Yobe State, tagged “Tinubu Must Go”, saying President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Independence Day broadcast did not address their grievances.


The protest, which coincided with Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary on October 1, saw the demonstrators march through the Tsohowar Kasuwa area of Potiskum, carrying placards and flags of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

According to the protesters, the demonstration was aimed at drawing attention to economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment and what they described as poor leadership since 2023.


“We came out today to express our fundamental rights, freedom of speech. We are suffering from this government, people are dying due to insecurity, poverty and unemployment in the land”, a protester said while speaking with newsmen on condition of anonymity.


Another protester who claimed allegiance to the opposition said the youths were saddened by the state of the nation’s economy and education system.


Eyewitnesses said the protest was conducted in a peaceful and orderly manner, with most of the participants being young men and women, some carrying ADC flags. One of the protesters, Malam Gambo, told journalists that the youths took to the streets to protest against bad governance, hunger and insecurity.
