As Nigeria inches closer to the 2027 general election, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reignited debate over the role of the judiciary in the country’s electoral process, insisting that political victories should be determined by voters at the ballot box rather than in courtrooms. His remarks followed a Court of Appeal judgment that removed legal obstacles affecting the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the next general election. Atiku argued that democracy is strengthened when citizens, not judges, decide who governs them. According to him, while the courts remain essential for interpreting the law and resolving genuine disputes, they should not become the primary battleground for political contests that ought to be settled through elections. His comments come after the Court of Appeal overturned an earlier Federal High Court judgment that sought to remove the ADC and other political parties from Nigeria’s democratic space. The appellate court ruled that the earlier decision was a nullity and reaffirmed the party’s legal standing, allowing it to focus on preparations for the 2027 election. Why Atiku’s statement matters Nigeria’s recent electoral history has seen major elections followed by lengthy legal battles. The 2019 and 2023 presidential elections both ended up before election tribunals and appellate courts after opposition parties challenged the declared results. While election petitions are recognised under Nigerian law, repeated post-election litigation has fuelled public debate about the credibility of the electoral process and confidence in democratic institutions. Atiku’s latest comments therefore go beyond his own political ambitions. They touch on a broader issue: whether elections are increasingly being won in court instead of through votes cast by Nigerians. The bigger challenge for 2027 Regardless of political affiliation, many observers believe the credibility of the 2027 election will depend on transparent voting, effective election management and public trust in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). If Nigerians have confidence that every vote counts, there will likely be fewer disputes after results are announced. Political parties also have a responsibility to campaign on policies rather than relying on legal manoeuvres before or after elections. At the same time, the judiciary must remain independent and impartial whenever genuine electoral disputes arise. What it means Atiku’s call reflects a principle that many democracies strive to uphold: elections should primarily be decided by citizens exercising their right to vote. Whether that aspiration becomes reality in 2027 will depend on the conduct of political parties, electoral authorities, security agencies, the courts and, ultimately, Nigerian voters themselves. With inflation continuing to affect household budgets, one question many Nigerians are asking is simple: how much money is enough to live comfortably? The answer depends on where you live, your family size and your lifestyle. Living comfortably means being able to pay rent, eat well, cover transportation costs, handle healthcare expenses, afford internet access, save money and still have enough left for leisure activities. According to recent cost of living analyses, a salary that feels comfortable in Lagos may be considered luxurious in some other Nigerian cities. Experts estimate that a single professional in Lagos may need at least ₦300,000 to ₦400,000 monthly to maintain a decent standard of living, while families require significantly more. What different salary levels can afford in Nigeria ₦100,000 or less per month This is survival mode for most urban residents. Rent, transportation and food costs can quickly consume the entire income, leaving little room for savings or emergencies. ₦200,000 to ₦300,000 per month This range allows a single person to live modestly in many Nigerian cities outside Lagos and Abuja. However, supporting a family on this amount can still be difficult due to rising living costs. ₦400,000 to ₦700,000 per month Many Nigerians consider this the beginning of a comfortable lifestyle. It allows for better housing, reliable transportation, quality food and some savings, especially for singles and young families. ₦1 million and above per month At this level, many professionals can comfortably afford good accommodation, private healthcare, regular travel and consistent savings, depending on location and family size. Lagos remains the most expensive city Lagos continues to be Nigeria’s economic powerhouse, but it is also one of the country’s most expensive places to live. Rising rents, transportation costs and utility bills have made it increasingly difficult for many workers to keep up with living expenses. Recent reports show that housing costs have become a major burden for residents as rents continue to rise faster than incomes. How much does a family need? Financial analysts suggest that a family of four may need between ₦200,000 and ₦300,000 monthly for basic living expenses, but a truly comfortable lifestyle with savings, quality healthcare and better housing often requires substantially more. The bottom line For most Nigerians in 2026, a salary of ₦400,000 to ₦700,000 per month is increasingly viewed as the range where comfort begins. In Lagos and Abuja, many households may need even higher incomes to maintain a middle-class lifestyle. Ultimately, the salary needed to live comfortably depends on personal circumstances, but one thing is clear: the cost of living has risen sharply, making financial planning more important than ever. Many job seekers spend hours refreshing job boards and submitting applications, yet receive little or no feedback. According to recruitment professionals, a significant number of vacancies are filled before they are ever advertised publicly. This hidden job market consists of opportunities shared through referrals, professional networks, recruiters and direct company contacts. Experts say understanding how these jobs are filled can significantly improve a candidate’s chances of securing employment. 1. Employee referrals Many organisations prefer to hire through referrals before opening positions to the public. When an employee recommends a candidate, hiring managers often review that application ahead of others because it comes from a trusted source within the company. Building relationships with people already working in target organisations can therefore provide access to opportunities that never reach job boards. 2. Direct messages to hiring managers Recruitment experts advise job seekers to contact hiring managers directly on professional platforms such as LinkedIn. Rather than sending generic messages asking for vacancies, candidates are encouraged to introduce themselves, explain their experience and show how their skills align with the organisation’s goals. This approach can place applicants on a manager’s radar before a role is formally advertised. 3. Recruitment agencies Many companies outsource recruitment to specialised agencies. In some cases, recruiters are given instructions to source candidates quietly before a public announcement is made. Registering with reputable recruitment firms and maintaining regular contact can expose job seekers to opportunities unavailable elsewhere. 4. Company career pages Some organisations publish vacancies only on their official websites. Career experts recommend identifying companies of interest and checking their career pages regularly. Setting Google alerts for keywords such as “careers” or “hiring” alongside a company name can also help candidates discover openings early. 5. Informational interviews Full list here: https://yaroinsider.ng/2026/07/25/why-70-percent-of-jobs-are-never-posted-online/

American rap superstar Cardi B has spoken publicly for the first time amid growing speculation linking her romantically with Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, ending weeks of intense discussion among football fans and entertainment followers. The rumours gathered momentum after the Nigerian international and the Grammy-winning artist were reportedly seen together on several occasions in Europe. Social media platforms quickly became flooded with claims that the pair were in a relationship, with photos and videos circulating widely online. Neither Cardi B nor Okoye initially responded to the speculation, allowing the rumours to gain even more attention. Fans of both celebrities closely monitored their social media activities, searching for clues about the nature of their relationship. However, Cardi B has now broken her silence, offering her most direct response yet to the claims. Her comments have generated fresh debate online, with some fans interpreting them as a denial of a romantic relationship while others believe she deliberately left room for speculation. The development has placed Okoye at the centre of an unusual media spotlight far beyond football. The Udinese goalkeeper is already one of Nigeria’s most recognizable footballers, having established himself as a regular figure in the Super Eagles setup and one of the country’s leading goalkeeping talents. Born in Germany to Nigerian parents, Okoye has enjoyed a steady rise in European football. His performances for club and country have earned him a strong following among Nigerian supporters, who have closely followed his career since his international debut. Cardi B, meanwhile, remains one of the most influential figures in global entertainment. The American rapper has built a massive worldwide fan base through her chart-topping music, business ventures and social media presence, making any development involving her personal life a major topic of public discussion. The rumours linking the two personalities have attracted attention not only in Nigeria and the United States but also across Europe, where both maintain significant public profiles. While Cardi B’s latest comments have provided some clarity, they have not completely ended public interest in the story. Social media users continue to debate whether there is any truth behind the speculation or whether the entire episode has been exaggerated by online gossip. As of now, neither Cardi B nor Maduka Okoye has officially confirmed being in a relationship. Until either party provides a definitive statement, the speculation is likely to remain a talking point among both football and entertainment audiences. A father of 11, Lawal Hamisu, has asked Sharia Court II sitting at Magajin Gari in Kaduna State to compel his daughter, Fatima Lawal, to accept marriage after she allegedly rejected several prospective suitors. Hamisu told the court that his daughter, who is of marriageable age, had consistently turned down marriage proposals despite repeated efforts by the family. He urged the court to intervene and direct her to choose a suitable husband. According to the father, Fatima’s refusal to marry had become a source of concern for the family, prompting him to seek legal intervention through the Sharia Court. In her response, Fatima opposed her father’s request, insisting that she could not be forced into a marriage against her wishes. She told the court she would only marry someone of her own choice when she is ready. After hearing both parties, the presiding judge adjourned the matter to allow for further proceedings and possible reconciliation between the father and daughter. The case has generated widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians debating the balance between parental guidance, religious customs and an individual’s right to choose a life partner. The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has clarified that President Bola Tinubu’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, was invited for questioning over the ongoing investigation into the controversial Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC) scandal and was not arrested. The clarification followed widespread reports and speculation suggesting that the former Speaker of the House of Representatives had been detained by the anti-corruption agency in connection with the probe. Gbajabiamila appeared at the ICPC headquarters in Abuja on Monday after receiving an invitation from investigators handling the case. According to his lawyer, Jiti Ogunye, the Chief of Staff arrived at the commission’s office, provided testimony, answered questions from investigators and subsequently returned to his official duties. “In full cooperation with the ICPC,” Ogunye said, Gbajabiamila responded to the commission’s invitation as part of the ongoing investigation into the activities of the alleged fake agency. The PFIPC controversy emerged after the Presidency distanced itself from the organisation, insisting that no such agency was created by the Federal Government. President Tinubu subsequently directed the ICPC to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the matter and submit a report within 30 days. The scandal centres on allegations that a non-existent government agency operated with apparent official recognition, secured office space, appeared in budget documents and allegedly used forged government documents. Authorities have been investigating how the organisation was able to gain legitimacy despite lacking any legal foundation. Adeniyi Adeyemi, the individual accused of operating the PFIPC, had earlier claimed that Gbajabiamila played a role in his appointment. The Chief of Staff has repeatedly denied the allegation, insisting that he neither appointed Adeyemi nor had any dealings with him. Meanwhile, Gbajabiamila has filed a N15 billion defamation suit against Adeyemi over allegations that he demanded kickbacks linked to the agency’s proposed funding. The Chief of Staff described the claims as false, malicious and defamatory. The ICPC investigation continues as lawmakers, anti-corruption agencies and other government institutions seek to determine how the controversial agency operated and whether public officials were involved in its activities. Nigeria is a country of extraordinary potential. It has Africa’s largest population, vast oil and gas resources, a young and ambitious population, a powerful cultural influence, and one of the continent’s largest economies. Yet Nigeria continues to carry a deeply damaging reputation on the international stage: the reputation of a country where corruption, weak accountability and the misuse of public resources remain deeply embedded in public life. This reputation is not based on a single scandal or one political party. It is the result of years of institutional weaknesses, unresolved audit queries, procurement controversies, alleged misuse of public funds and the perception that powerful individuals often escape meaningful consequences. The tragedy is that ordinary Nigerians continue to pay the price. A Global Reputation That Remains Stuck The latest Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index offers little evidence of a major breakthrough. In the 2025 CPI, Nigeria scored only 26 out of 100 and ranked 142nd out of 182 countries. Its score remained unchanged from the previous year. The CPI measures perceived public-sector corruption, with 0 representing “highly corrupt” and 100 representing “very clean.” Nigeria’s position is particularly troubling because the country has enormous economic potential. It is one of the world’s most important energy producers and has a population of more than 200 million people. Yet its corruption score remains close to the bottom of the global rankings. The message sent to investors, citizens and the international community is damaging: despite repeated anti-corruption campaigns and the creation of powerful investigative institutions, Nigeria has struggled to produce a sustained improvement in public-sector integrity. The country is not simply suffering from a bad image. It is suffering from a credibility problem. The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to the National President of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, Bello Bodejo, in the sum of N2 billion following his arraignment on allegations bordering on money laundering and terrorism financing. Bodejo was earlier arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on a 12-count charge involving alleged money laundering linked to funds reportedly traced to Bauchi State government accounts. The anti-graft agency also accused him of offences connected to terrorism financing. The Miyetti Allah leader pleaded not guilty to all charges when he appeared before Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court. Following his plea, his legal team applied for bail, arguing that he would be available for trial and would not interfere with investigations. Prosecutors had opposed the application, maintaining that the defendant posed a flight risk and could potentially obstruct the judicial process. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court admitted Bodejo to bail on conditions that include a N2 billion bond and other requirements to be fulfilled before his release. The court also fixed a date for the continuation of proceedings in the case. The case has attracted national attention due to the nature of the allegations and Bodejo’s position as the leader of one of Nigeria’s most prominent cattle breeders’ associations. The EFCC alleges that millions of dollars were unlawfully handled through transactions connected to public funds, claims that the defendant has denied. Iranian missiles hit US-used base in Jordan, kill two American troops Fresh tensions between Iran and the United States have escalated after Iranian ballistic missiles and drones struck Jordan’s Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, a facility used by US and coalition forces. Videos circulating online reportedly show the moment explosions rocked the military installation during the July 17 attack, raising concerns about a wider regional conflict. According to reports attributed to the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), the strike resulted in the deaths of two American service members, while another was reported missing. Several others sustained injuries, although some were later treated and discharged. The attack is being described as one of the most significant direct confrontations between Iran and US forces since hostilities intensified in the region. Military analysts say the incident demonstrates Iran’s ability to penetrate layered air defence systems protecting strategic installations. Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, located in Jordan, serves as a critical logistics and operational hub for American and coalition military activities across the Middle East. The facility has played a key role in intelligence gathering, surveillance operations and regional security missions. The reported deaths mark the first American combat fatalities directly linked to Iranian military action in the latest phase of the conflict. The development is expected to increase pressure on Washington’s response strategy as regional instability continues to grow. Security experts warn that the attack could trigger further retaliation and deepen tensions across the Middle East, where multiple flashpoints remain active. Concerns are also mounting over the potential impact on global energy markets and international security. Neither Tehran nor Washington had issued comprehensive official statements on the latest reports at the time of filing this report. However, the incident has already sparked widespread reactions online and renewed fears of a broader military escalation. Born Into Debt: Every Nigerian Now Owes ₦724,000 Before They Even Take Their First Breath By the time a Nigerian child cries for the first time in a hospital in Lagos, Kano, or Port Harcourt, that baby already owes the country's creditors close to three-quarters of a million naira. No job. No bank account. No sin committed. Just born Nigerian — and born in debt. That is not an exaggeration. It is arithmetic. THE NUMBERS NOBODY WANTS TO SAY OUT LOUD According to the latest figures released by the Debt Management Office (DMO), Nigeria's total public debt — covering the Federal Government, all 36 states, and the FCT — hit ₦159.28 trillion (about $110.97 billion) as of December 31, 2025. That's not a typo. That's the official number, confirmed by the debt office itself and reported across multiple newsrooms in April 2026. Break it down and the picture gets worse: - Domestic debt: ₦84.85 trillion (about 53.3% of the total) - External debt: ₦74.43 trillion, roughly $51.86 billion (about 46.7% of the total) - Quarter-on-quarter jump: debt rose by ₦5.98 trillion — that's 3.9% — in just three months, from September to December 2025 - Year-on-year jump: ₦14.61 trillion added in a single year, a 10.1% rise from ₦144.67 trillion in December 2024 Divide ₦159.28 trillion by Nigeria's estimated population of roughly 220 million people, and every single citizen — from the newborn in the maternity ward to the elder in the village — is carrying an estimated ₦724,000 in public debt on their head. Nobody asked them. Nobody consulted them. It was simply assigned. A DECADE OF BORROWING THAT NEVER SLOWED DOWN This didn't happen overnight. It's the result of ten straight years of borrowing, and the trend line only points one way: up. Year | Total Public Debt (₦ trillion) | YoY Growth 2015 | 12.60 | — 2016 | 17.36 | +37.7% 2017 | 21.73 | +25.1% 2018 | 24.39 | +12.2% 2019 | 27.40 | +12.4% 2020 | 32.92 | +20.1% 2021 | 39.56 | +20.2% 2022 | 46.25 | +16.9% 2023 | 97.34 | +110.5% 2024 | 144.67 | +48.6% 2025 | 159.28 | +10.1% (Figures from 2015–2022 are drawn from DMO historical records as compiled by financial data trackers; 2023–2025 figures are confirmed directly from official DMO releases.) Look closely at 2023. Debt didn't just rise — it more than doubled in a single year, jumping by over 110%. Analysts point to a mix of factors: the securitisation of the CBN's Ways and Means advances, naira devaluation inflating the local-currency value of dollar debt, and continued borrowing to plug budget deficits. Whatever the technical explanation, the effect on ordinary people is the same — the debt burden they never agreed to keeps climbing. Since 2015, Nigeria's total public debt has grown more than twelvefold in naira terms. In dollar terms the climb looks less dramatic — from around $65 billion in 2015 to about $111 billion by the end of 2025 — but that gap itself tells its own story: the naira has weakened so much that even "manageable" dollar debt has become crushing when converted into the currency Nigerians are actually paid and spend in. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei has issued a fresh warning to the United States, saying continued military pressure and what he described as “warmongering” would bring “unforgettable lessons” for Washington. The remarks come as tensions between the two countries continue to escalate. In a written statement released on Saturday, Khamenei accused the United States of repeatedly violating its commitments and questioned the credibility of agreements signed by Washington. He argued that Iran would not retreat in the face of external pressure and said the country and its regional allies were prepared to respond to further actions against them. The statement follows renewed hostilities between Iran and the United States after the collapse of a recent understanding intended to reduce tensions. The latest exchanges have heightened concerns about the possibility of a broader regional conflict involving multiple countries in the Middle East. Khamenei’s comments also reflect Tehran’s continued criticism of US foreign policy in the region. Iranian officials have repeatedly maintained that the country will defend its sovereignty and respond to any military action directed against it. The renewed conflict between the United States and Iran has once again put the world on edge — not just militarily, but economically. Every time tensions flare in the Middle East, the effects ripple far beyond the region: fuel prices jump, shipping costs rise, and household budgets everywhere feel the squeeze. This isn't a distant war for most people — it shows up at the gas pump, in grocery bills, and in the cost of everyday goods. Why This Conflict Hits the World Economy So Hard The Middle East, and Iran in particular, sits at the heart of global energy supply. Iran borders the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway through which roughly one-fifth of the world's oil supply passes every single day. Any disruption there — whether from military strikes, blockades, or the threat of mines and attacks on tankers — sends shockwaves through energy markets instantly, even before actual supply is cut. Since renewed hostilities broke out this year, oil markets have swung wildly: - In late February, when US-Israeli strikes on Iran began, Brent crude jumped roughly 10% in a single session, crossing $80 a barrel, while US crude (WTI) rose about $5 to around $72 [1]. - By early March, following "Operation Epic Fury," Brent had climbed above $85 and WTI near $81 — a 20% surge since the start of the year [2]. - Later in March, WTI crossed $101 a barrel — its highest close since mid-2022 — with prices up roughly 50% since the war began [3]. Some analysts warned Brent could reach $200 if the conflict dragged on through June with Hormuz shut [4]. - A ceasefire and US-Iran peace memorandum in mid-2026 briefly pushed Brent back toward pre-war levels (under $70) [5]. - When hostilities resumed in July, Brent jumped again — first above $76 [5], then to $85.92 a barrel by July 14 after three consecutive days of renewed strikes, 19% above pre-war levels [6]. As of July 13, Brent traded near $78 [7]. Each escalation has produced single-day price jumps of roughly 3–9%, even before any actual barrels of oil stop flowing — a sign of how much of the price reflects pure risk premium rather than confirmed supply loss. Fuel and Gas: The First Place You'll Feel It - Crude oil prices rise sharply whenever attacks escalate, as traders price in supply risk. - Gasoline and diesel prices at the pump follow with a short delay. - Natural gas prices climb too, since gas and oil markets are interconnected [1]. - US pump prices were flagged as potentially climbing above $3 a gallon during early 2026 escalation [1]. - Goldman Sachs estimated the conflict could remove ~1.75 million barrels/day of Iranian supply over six months, projecting Brent could peak just over $90/barrel before easing into the $60s — but warned a Hormuz closure could push prices 35% higher, potentially above $100 [7]. JPMorgan modeled a worst case as high as $120 [7]. Macquarie warned of up to $200/barrel if the war extended through June with Hormuz closed [4]. Prominent Indian activist and environmental campaigner Sonam Wangchuk has been taken to hospital after spending more than 20 days on a hunger strike in New Delhi, as concerns mounted over his deteriorating health. Authorities said the decision was taken following medical advice and a court directive aimed at protecting his wellbeing. Wangchuk, 59, began the hunger strike on June 28 in support of demands for education reforms and the resignation of India’s Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, following controversy surrounding examination paper leaks that affected millions of students. His protest attracted nationwide attention and generated widespread support on social media. According to police and hospital officials, Wangchuk’s health weakened significantly after nearly three weeks without food. Doctors have reported that he remains stable but requires continuous medical monitoring due to dehydration and the physical effects of prolonged fasting. https://yaroinsider.ng/2026/07/18/indian-activist-sonam-wangchuk-hospitalised-after-20-day-hunger-strike/
