The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has clarified that President Bola Tinubu’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, was invited for questioning over the ongoing investigation into the controversial Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC) scandal and was not arrested.

The clarification followed widespread reports and speculation suggesting that the former Speaker of the House of Representatives had been detained by the anti-corruption agency in connection with the probe.

Gbajabiamila appeared at the ICPC headquarters in Abuja on Monday after receiving an invitation from investigators handling the case. The scandal centres on allegations that a non-existent government agency operated with apparent official recognition, secured office space, appeared in budget documents and allegedly used forged government documents. Authorities have been investigating how the organisation was able to gain legitimacy despite lacking any legal foundation.

Adeniyi Adeyemi, the individual accused of operating the PFIPC, had earlier claimed that Gbajabiamila played a role in his appointment. The Chief of Staff has repeatedly denied the allegation, insisting that he neither appointed Adeyemi nor had any dealings with him.

Meanwhile, Gbajabiamila has filed a N15 billion defamation suit against Adeyemi over allegations that he demanded kickbacks linked to the agency’s proposed funding. The Chief of Staff described the claims as false, malicious and defamatory.

A High Court sitting in Calabar, Cross River State, has sentenced a 51-year-old pastor, Apostle Ubong Bassey Etim, to death by hanging for the murder of his 16-year-old daughter, Deborah Bassey.

Nigeria is a country of extraordinary potential. It has Africa’s largest population, vast oil and gas resources, a young and ambitious population, a powerful cultural influence, and one of the continent’s largest economies.

The tragedy is that ordinary Nigerians continue to pay the price.

A Global Reputation That Remains Stuck

The latest Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index offers little evidence of a major breakthrough.

In the 2025 CPI, Nigeria scored only 26 out of 100 and ranked 142nd out of 182 countries. Its score remained unchanged from the previous year. The CPI measures perceived public-sector corruption, with 0 representing “highly corrupt” and 100 representing “very clean.”

Nigeria’s position is particularly troubling because the country has enormous economic potential. It is one of the world’s most important energy producers and has a population of more than 200 million people. Yet its corruption score remains close to the bottom of the global rankings.

The message sent to investors, citizens and the international community is damaging: despite repeated anti-corruption campaigns and the creation of powerful investigative institutions, Nigeria has struggled to produce a sustained improvement in public-sector integrity.

The country is not simply suffering from a bad image. It is suffering from a credibility problem.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the commencement of its 2026 recruitment exercise, inviting suitably qualified Nigerians to apply for positions across various departments of the commission.

According to the recruitment notice, applications are open for entry-level positions on Grade Levels 07, 08, 09, 10 and 12 as part of efforts to strengthen the commission’s institutional capacity in electoral administration, voter registration, data management, election logistics and other critical operations.

Available positions include Professional Cadre officers, Administrative Officers and Executive Officers.
Applicants for the professional cadre are required to possess a bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification, while candidates seeking administrative and executive officer positions must meet the specified educational and professional requirements outlined by the commission.

INEC stated that applicants must be Nigerian citizens by birth, possess valid certificates of state of origin, be medically fit, have no criminal record and must not be above 35 years of age at the time of application.

The commission also emphasized that candidates must demonstrate integrity, discipline and commitment to public service. In addition, applicants are expected to have relevant computer skills and the ability to work effectively within the electoral system.

Applications are to be submitted online through the commission’s recruitment portal. INEC stressed that the recruitment process is free of charge and warned applicants against submitting multiple applications or presenting false information, noting that such actions could lead to automatic disqualification.

Only shortlisted candidates will proceed to the next stage of the recruitment process.

According to the notice, the application window opens on July 20, 2026, and closes on July 27, 2026.

The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to the National President of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, Bello Bodejo, in the sum of N2 billion following his arraignment on allegations bordering on money laundering and terrorism financing.

Bodejo was earlier arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on a 12-count charge involving alleged money laundering linked to funds reportedly traced to Bauchi State government accounts. The anti-graft agency also accused him of offences connected to terrorism financing.

The Miyetti Allah leader pleaded not guilty to all charges when he appeared before Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court. Following his plea, his legal team applied for bail, arguing that he would be available for trial and would not interfere with investigations.

Prosecutors had opposed the application, maintaining that the defendant posed a flight risk and could potentially obstruct the judicial process.

After hearing arguments from both sides, the court admitted Bodejo to bail on conditions that include a N2 billion bond and other requirements to be fulfilled before his release. The court also fixed a date for the continuation of proceedings in the case.

The case has attracted national attention due to the nature of the allegations and Bodejo’s position as the leader of one of Nigeria’s most prominent cattle breeders’ associations. Born Into Debt: Every Nigerian Now Owes ₦724,000 Before They Even Take Their First Breath

By the time a Nigerian child cries for the first time in a hospital in Lagos, Kano, or Port Harcourt, that baby already owes the country's creditors close to three-quarters of a million naira. No job. No bank account. No sin committed. Just born Nigerian — and born in debt.

That is not an exaggeration. It is arithmetic.

THE NUMBERS NOBODY WANTS TO SAY OUT LOUD

According to the latest figures released by the Debt Management Office (DMO), Nigeria's total public debt — covering the Federal Government, all 36 states, and the FCT — hit ₦159.28 trillion (about $110.97 billion) as of December 31, 2025. That's not a typo. That's the official number, confirmed by the debt office itself and reported across multiple newsrooms in April 2026.

Break it down and the picture gets worse:
- Domestic debt: ₦84.85 trillion (about 53.3% of the total)
- External debt: ₦74.43 trillion, roughly $51.86 billion (about 46.7% of the total)
- Quarter-on-quarter jump: debt rose by ₦5.98 trillion — that's 3.9% — in just three months, from September to December 2025
- Year-on-year jump: ₦14.61 trillion added in a single year, a 10.1% rise from ₦144.67 trillion in December 2024

Divide ₦159.28 trillion by Nigeria's estimated population of roughly 220 million people, and every single citizen — from the newborn in the maternity ward to the elder in the village — is carrying an estimated ₦724,000 in public debt on their head. Nobody asked them. Nobody consulted them. It was simply assigned.

A DECADE OF BORROWING THAT NEVER SLOWED DOWN

This didn't happen overnight. It's the result of ten straight years of borrowing, and the trend line only points one way: up.

Whatever the technical explanation, the effect on ordinary people is the same — the debt burden they never agreed to keeps climbing.

Since 2015, Nigeria's total public debt has grown more than twelvefold in naira terms. In dollar terms the climb looks less dramatic — from around $65 billion in 2015 to about $111 billion by the end of 2025 — but that gap itself tells its own story: the naira has weakened so much that even "manageable" dollar debt has become crushing when converted into the currency Nigerians are actually paid and spend in.

Nigerian fintech startup Gigbanc has announced plans to shut down its operations after three years in business, becoming the latest African startup to succumb to a challenging fundraising environment. Customers have been given until July 31, 2026, to withdraw their funds as the company begins winding down its services.

The company, which built cross-border payment solutions for freelancers, remote workers, digital creators and businesses, disclosed that it is currently in acquisition discussions with an unnamed Nigerian fintech infrastructure provider as it explores its next steps.

Why Gigbanc is shutting down

According to Gigbanc’s management, raising fresh investment capital became increasingly difficult amid a tougher funding climate for African startups. The company also cited the high cost of compliance requirements, particularly Know Your Customer (KYC) obligations, and infrastructure expenses associated with running a cross-border payments platform.

Chief Executive Officer and co-founder Paul Omoregie Okundaye said the startup considered changing its business model but was unable to secure the funding required to support such a transition. As a result, management concluded that pursuing an acquisition and winding down operations was the most practical option.

The Court of Appeal sitting in Ilorin has affirmed the death sentence imposed on Abdulrahman Bello, a self-acclaimed Islamic cleric convicted of murdering Hafsoh Yetunde Lawal, a student of the Kwara State College of Education, Ilorin. The appellate court dismissed Bello’s appeal and upheld the judgment of the lower court.

In a unanimous decision delivered by a panel led by Justice Gabriel Omoniyi Kolawole, the court ruled that the prosecution successfully proved the offences of murder and unlawful possession of human parts beyond reasonable doubt. The judges held that the trial court properly evaluated the evidence before reaching its verdict.

Bello was sentenced to death by hanging by a Kwara State High Court in July 2025 after being found guilty of killing 24-year-old Lawal, who was reported to be his Facebook lover. The victim was a final-year student at the Kwara State College of Education.

Former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, has pleaded not guilty to a six-count charge of alleged certificate forgery filed against him by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). The case was heard on Monday at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

According to the anti-corruption agency, Nnaji is accused of allegedly presenting forged academic credentials, including a degree certificate purportedly issued by the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). He was also accused of allegedly presenting a false National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge certificate during his ministerial screening process.

The former minister denied all the allegations when the charges were read before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik.
Court Grants Bail
Following an application by his legal team, the court granted Nnaji bail in the sum of N20 million with one surety in like sum. The judge ruled that the surety must be a civil servant resident in Abuja and not below Grade Level 15.

The court also ordered the former minister to surrender his international passport and directed that he must not travel outside the country without prior approval from the court.
