Developer 173210 ports VHBL to yet another game, talks about TN-V compatibility October 21, 2013 in PS Vita, security, TN Hen, VHBL by wololo | 19 comments There were 4 undisclosed exploits on Vita’s firmware 2.61, until Japanese developer 173210 kindly released his VHBL port, “reducing” the number to 3 “yet to be revealed” exploits. But we’re back to 4, as 173210 confirmed one of his other psp usermode exploits wasn’t patched yet. With apparently the help from Qwikrazor87, famous for being involved in pretty much every single VHBL port nowadays, 173210 was able to port VHBL to his exploit fairly quickly. 173210 shared screenshots of his work on twitter, these screenshots being taken on a PSP for now. VHBL exploits are typically found in PSP games and run on the Vita through the PSP emulator. The typical development process involves doing most of the work on a hacked PSP, and do only the final verifications on a PS Vita. The screenshot below shows 173210′s port running the default VHBL menu on his PSP. It is unclear at this point if and when any of the 4 devs with those hidden VHBL exploits will release their work. There’s a possibility most of them are waiting for Total_Noob’s TN-V upcoming release (majorly expected since it would be the first psp kernel exploit release for the vita since last year in December), in order not to “waste” their exploit for now. PSP usermode exploits allowing to run homebrews on the PS Vita have been revealed in 12 games so far (more than 20 if you count their variations), since the Vita release 2 years ago. Speaking of TN-V, Total_Noob has been asking the community to help porting TN-V 4 to existing usermode exploits, an initiative being tracked on our /talk forums here 173210 mentioned that he was able to port his recently released exploit to TN-V 4, as confirmed by the heart warming green screen displayed by Total_Noob’s tool developed for that purpose. Again, this was done with the help of Qwikrazor87, it seems 173210 had also been recently looking into possibilities to connect the Vita to a PC with direct usb communication, by exploiting some specific PSP games that had USB with PS2/PS3 communication mechanisms. Sadly, it appears the Vita implementation of that driver is made of dummy functions that do not work, so progress on that finding last week apparently led to a dead end. With 2 exploits, work on TN-V compatibility, and some additional work on usb drivers, 173210 has been extremely active recently

October 20, 2013 Killzone Mercenary Gets 1GB Patch 10/20/2013 PS Vita shooter Killzone Mercenary gets it second update, more details inside.......... Killzone: Mercenary has received its second patch which: The other main area of work has been to provide a better distribution of respawn points across all game modes. The intention here is to give a better balance to the multiplayer games. We’ve also addressed the issue that some of you were reporting with load-out slots not being unlocked, in addition to problems with the melee medal (which was always being awarded as a “bronze”). Finally, there are also a number of stability fixes, to address some of the crashes that have been reported. The patch is a whopping 1GB which will cause problems especially for 4GB owners, it seems like now is a good time for Sony to finally provide cheaper memory cards. However though this is the second patch the older patch will be deleted upon installation, freeing some memory in the process.

October 19, 2013 Need for Speed Rivals Not Coming To PS Vita 10/19/2013 Sadly Need for Speed Rivals will not be coming to PS Vita and Wii U, reason inside........... Ghost Games Creative Director claims that low sales and not enough demand are to blame for Need for Speed Rivals not making an appearance on the PS Vita: "Need For Speed Most Wanted didn’t really sell that many, in terms of the Wii U market. I would love for it to have, because we put so much effort into that, trust me. I’d love for it to be way bigger than it was, and the same for the Vita." Personally I really enjoyed Most Wanted on the PS Vita and was hoping for a portable release of Need for Speed Rivals.

October 11, 2013 The Amazing Spider-Man Game Announced For PS Vita The PS Vita will be receiving an updated port of The Amazing Spider-Man game, more details and screenshots inside........ Bill Chinn // Executive Producer, Mercenary Technology writes: Look out! With New York Comic Con just around the corner, I’m swinging by to let you know more about the upcoming PS Vita release of The Amazing Spider-Man from Activision, a hand-held version of the original PS3 title. For those of you new to the series, The Amazing Spider-Man takes place after the events of the movie and features a new, original story. It mixes all-out, freeform brawls and stealth-based, stalk-and-strike challenges with a fast-paced momentum that puts Spidey front and center in the action. If you caught the game when it first launched on PS3, you already know The Amazing Spider-Man gives you free roam and free reign over the isle of Manhattan, a bustling and beautiful open world teeming with sights to see, citizens to aid and colossal bosses to rip down. The PS Vita release of The Amazing Spider-Man is a virtual playground in your pocket, maintaining that same spirit of the console edition while adding new energy through Vita’s special features. Tying it all together is the Web Rush system, slowing down time in a heartbeat and opening up a variety of superpowered combat and movement actions on-the-fly. That unparalleled sensation of soaring above New York, stringing up an unsuspecting thug with a Web Strike or somersaulting clear of an incoming attack feels even more natural now thanks to the responsive, touchscreen controls Vita brings to Web Rush, allowing for quick and precise decisions with the tap of a finger. Peter Parker’s smartphone plays an integral part in how you interact with the city around you, and PS Vita’s unique form reinforces these elements. The pinch-and-zoom support afforded by Vita’s multi-touch capabilities makes navigation a breeze, allowing you to effortlessly drag around the mini-map, set waypoints and track your bearings, just like you would with a real smartphone’s map app. And Vita’s gyroscopic functionality lets you snap front-page photos by aiming the device like an actual camera, zooming in and out with a simple touch. We’re thrilled to be able to deliver a modern Spidey experience to PS Vita owners. The Amazing Spider-Man comes out November 19th in North America for $39.99, and makes a great package for Spider-Fans on the move. |

October 07, 2013 Injustice: Gods Among Us Announced For PS Vita Injustice: Gods Among Us has been announced for the PS Vita along with a release date, more details inside.......... Armature Studio Statement is as follows: Armature Studio is proud to announce our next game for PS Vita, Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition, is hitting stores on November 12th. When developing Injustice on Vita, our primary goal was to make sure it could hold its own next to its console counterpart. The PS3 version has beautiful lighting, destructible environments, and — most importantly — 60 FPS fighting. We worked tirelessly to bring this experience to the handheld, and pulled out all the stops to push the PS Vita as hard as we could to make all of the above happen. In addition to all of this, we’ve included ad-hoc multiplayer, traditional multiplayer over wifi, and touch controls to Story Mode and various S.T.A.R. Labs Missions. Also, since this is the Ultimate Edition, the game will include all downloadable content that was released for the console edition. Our friends at NetherRealm Studios made such a wonderful game in Injustice: Gods Among Us. We’re just happy to be able to use our experience on prior PS Vita projects to take what they did and spare no expense in creating a version of the game that allows people to play it on the go. We hope you enjoy the game when it launches next month!

September 29, 2013 Sony "Nowhere Close" To Abandoning The PS Vita Fergal Gara, VP & Managing Director for Sony UK provides his thoughts on Sony abandoning the PS Vita, more details inside.......... Fergal revealed why Sony is not even considering abandoning the Playstation Vita and why PS4 will be a big help in promoting the PS Vita especially since positive feedback is why Sony still have a ton of faith in the PS Vita: Oh yes, I mean, if that wasn’t the case I think we would have good reason to lose confidence in the device and shelve it. We’re nowhere close to that decision now. There has been great positive feedback, but I want people to know that we do listen intently to the negative feedback too. We understand the drawbacks – it’s a bit expensive, also people expect multi-functionality on high-end mobile and portable devices, the content is expensive and a lot of people are used to getting free or cheap apps. But I took a look at the UK figures the other day, and PS Vita is now selling for about £70 less than this time last year, and the games are getting cheaper too, and we’ve got a Mega-Pack program, which is eight to ten games and a memory stick rolled in for free, and we’ve seen that as an attractive proposition. So we’re addressing these issues, and I should add that Remote Play will be free, and also the Instant Game Collection on PlayStation Plus gives people free games on PS3, PS4 and PS Vita. So I think we’ve listened, we’re working hard, and that the value proposition is better now. It’s in much better shape. PS Vita came into a very different marketplace than PSP. And of course, when we launched the Vita we couldn’t talk about one of its key advantages, in that it is designed to work with PS4. Vita does of course work well with PS3, but because of the way the handheld was designed means it offers a much slicker and more natural connection with PS4. |

September 24, 2013 FIFA 14 on 3DS and PS Vita has "no updates to gameplay or modes" EA have abandoned both portable consoles for this years new FIFA iteration, more details inside......... FIFA 14 PS Vita simply contains updated kits and player transfers. Not a single new update will be available thus making it simply a re-skin (and you thought Call of Duty was bad.) "FIFA 14 Legacy Edition delivers unmatched authenticity that reflects the current football season with updated kits and rosters but no updates to gameplay or game modes," Stated a press release sent out this morning. September 24, 2013 Starlight Inception Beta Imminent Beta info update on this space fighter for the PS Vita. September 22, 2013 Western PS Vita TV Interest Stronger Than Sony Expected Sony Japan exec Masayasu Ito has revealed that EU/US interest in PS Vita TV is much stronger than they anticipated, more details inside.......... In an interview with Eurogamer Sony Japan executive Masayasu Ito claims that western interest for PS Vita TV was "strong... more than we expected". He then detailed whether PS Vita TV will hit western shelves: "Of course we are thinking of launching it in the US and Europe," "But when it comes to the timing, we'll have to watch the environment and identify what other services are available in the US and Europe and whether we'll have to add other services." Ito also revealed that their are no solid plans for a western release yet due to the fact that in Japan their is no real media streaming device available thus allowing Sony to capture an entire market however in the west many media streaming boxes are readily availabe. "The reason we wanted to launch PlayStation Vita TV in Japan first was because we think that there is a significant gap in this market even for a pure streamed TV box," "There isn't really a competitor here that's staked out a claim. And frankly, in my own view, Japan is a little behind the adoption curve in video streaming services. "So we thought we could have an opportunity in Japan to really establish a leadership position by having an addition differentiated killer app - which is having our huge library of streaming games content." PS Vita TV should grace the west with a release eventually but until Sony fully investigate the region, a release anytime soon is unlikely.

PS4 games Sony has announced that there are over 140 games in development for its new next-gen console, the PS4, with 100 of those promised for the first year. "SCE World Wide Studios (SCE WWS) is currently developing more than 30 PS4 exclusive titles, 20 of them, including 12 new IPs, are planned to release within a year of the launch of the PS4 system," confirmed the company in a statement to Pocket-lint. Exclusive PS4 titles include Drive Club, Killzone Shadow Fall, Knack, which will be available at launch, and inFamous Second Son, available first quarter 2014. Sony also unveiled the next blockbuster title, The Order: 1886, from acclaimed studio Ready at Dawn, which will be available some time in 2014. But it's not just about big games from big publishers. In a move to ensure indie developers get a look in too. The PS4 will have a number of smaller indie games at launch including Transistor by Super Giant, Don't Starve by Klei Entertainment, Mercenary Kings by Tribute Games, Octodad: Deadliest Catch by Young Horses, Secret Ponchos by SwitchBlade Monkeys, Outlast by Red Barrels, Oddworld: New N Tasty by Oddworld Inhabitants and Galak-Z by 17-bit. Other titles to look forward to include Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy XV from Square Enix, Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag and Watch Dogs from Ubisoft, 2K Sports's NBA 2K14, Bethesda Game Studios' The Elder Scrolls Online, and Mad Max. Of course Sony is also promising Bungie's Destiny on the PS4 as well. We've also leant that the PlayStation 4 will be predictive, so it will be able to examine what you've been playing and know what you'll be interested in playing next. Even downloading it in the background in preparation to you buying it. One of the first titles to be demoed was the next-generation of the stalwart PlayStation title Killzone. Known as Killzone Shadow Fall, the level of detail seen in the demo was staggering. |

PS4 on Vita, iPhone, iPad and Android Expanding the PlayStation experience wider, Sony has also announced wide compatibility with other devices. The PS Vita is at the forefront of these experiences, naturally, with a Remote Play feature. Remote Play will let you pull content from your PS4 onto the portable PS Vita over Wi-Fi, so you'll be able to keep gaming away from your TV. It's a bit like the Wii U controller. We've seen this sort of promise before and never really found it to be as ambitious as we wanted, but Sony is stating that the aim is to make "most" PS4 titles compatible with Remote Play on the PS Vita. Other devices get a look-in too, including the likes of the Sony Xperia Z, as there will be a PlayStation App for Android and iOS devices. This will let you turn your favourite smartphone or tablet into a second screen for things like maps, which sounds similar to Xbox SmartGlass. You'll also be able to browse and buy games from the mobile app. And, as we've mentioned, with background downloads, you'll be able to buy a game whilst sitting on the bus and find it ready to play when you get home. As an extension of the social gaming, you'll also be able to use your mobile device in spectator mode to witness other gamers playing.
|
There will be a "Share" button on the new DualShock 4 controller that will let you scan back through the last few minutes of gameplay, and then let you upload that content whilst you resume playing. You'll be able to hook-up with Facebook to make sharing simple via existing social networks. There will also be a 3.5mm headphone socket on the new controller that will make chatting during gaming easier, but you'll also get spectator modes and the ability to call in help from friends who have completed games, letting them take over control if you're particularly stuck on a particular game element. |
Streaming and connected play Much has been made of the streaming and downloading capabilities of the PS4. Although the PS4 won't be backwards compatible with PS3 game discs, you will be able to stream older titles to the console, with Sony saying it's looking at making the library of more than 3,000 PlayStation 3 titles available as part of its long-term strategy. But in terms of PS4 games you'll be able to download and sample games from the PlayStation Store. Again, you won't have to wait for games to fully download, with Sony saying you'll be able to start playing as soon as you have the first part of the download, with the rest of the game downloading in the background, thanks to the incorporation of Gaikai's cloud technology. Talking of background downloads, the PS4 will be able to update games in standby mode, although we assume you'll pay a price in power consumption if you choose to do this. One final bonus is that Sony has now confirmed that the PS4 will play pre-owned titles. The second-hand games market will be happy. Cloud gaming and the ability to play PS3 games on your PS4 will launch in 2014, with the US first to get the service. Shared gaming Much has been made of the social and connected gaming experience, so you'll be able to share your gaming sessions, with "always on" video compression and decompression to give you seamless sharing. A partnership with Ustream announced that will host PS4 gaming action.

PlayStation 4 Eye Yes, it's actually called the PlayStation 4 Eye and that's not a dig at the ocularly challenged. The new PS4 Eye features dual cameras with an 85-degree wide-angle field of vision. The new Eye will be able to locate gamers in the room, as well as being able to identify the light bars from the DualShock 4 controller for accurate positioning. Face recognition is included and, thanks to having four mics, the PlayStation 4 Eye is said to be able to locate where voices are coming from too. The PS4 Eye supports the Move controller too. |
The Sony PlayStation 4, or PS4 as many will call it, is due for release on 29 November in Europe, and a little earlier on 15 November in the USA. Christmas around the world should be a whole heap of fun. But what exactly will the Playstation 4 be like? Read on to find out everything you need to know about the PS4 based on all the news so far. PS4 hardware The Sony PlayStation 4 will feature a single-chip x86-64 AMD Jaguar 8-core processor and 8GB of GDDR5 RAM. It's closer to PC architecture, with a PC-like graphics processor in the form of a 1.84 teraflops AMD Radeon graphics engine. However, don't think that super GPU equates to 4K visuals, it's been confirmed that the PS4 will not output games at UHD, only photos and home movies. It has been confirmed that there will be a hard drive on board for storage, with 500GB at your disposal. We guess there will be different capacities at different price points. The Sony PlayStation 4 console looks angular and sleek, with it's slanted design looking aggressive, like the sort of thing you'd find on a Lamborghini. Either than, or a slightly lop-sided Bourbon biscuit. There are no rounded tops or curves here, everything is flattened. The new console will sit vertically or horizontally, so will either fit into your existing TV stand, or become a monolith showpiece in its own right. The PS4 console sticks to black and blue colouring that we've seen before from PlayStation, but we've no doubt that there will be special editions in the future. It is, like the Xbox One, finished in two tones, partly glossy and partly matte.
