While u wait for Op's response, u can join D's UK thread nd ask ur question there too. https://www.nairaland.com/4158866/living-uk-life-uk-immigrantBonjovi13: Nice thread @Soknown Your writting is very expressive and your use of words make following your flow very easy.I am always wanting to know what next. I have also followed your soldier boy thread...I'm sure it would be quite a read.
I'd like your input if you may on a personal issue.
My wife is a BSC registered nurse and midwife. Finished with an impressive grade from a reputable private university in Nigeria.
Although she had a brief stint working in a clinical settings during ger service year, she has been in the HMO sector for the most part of her career.
She is mulling the idea of us relocating to UK. What advice would you give her.She has not worked in a hospital for years although she has been updating herself. What career path is available for her in the UK.
Secondly I am a lawyer by profession although I also work in a Federal Government parastatal.I have my own private law practice and businesses on the side.I am not doing badly thanks to God.
My question then is what is available for me in the UK.I cannot convert to nursing.I am a thoroughbred lawyer and business man.Nigeria and the UK are both members of the Commonwealth and we have the same legal system generally. To practice law in the UK is possible but I'd have to write the bar exams and stuff. That would cost money and time. With money being a critical factor in the UK(gleaned from your story),can we cope. We dont have any children yet.I am willing to let her go alone and I visit regularly but she is not too comfortable with that. Just give me your take. Anyone too who has an understanding of the career path of a lawyer in the UK can advice me too. Thanks |

Please what is MDT ? Soknown: Something happened in May that reminded me of where i was coming from. That particular week, i was working four long days, on the fourth day, the manager told me that there is an MDT meeting by 1400hr, immediately after my break. That i will be presenting on a particular patient. I was shocked, presenting as how? she said i will be giving information on how the patient has been over the four days that i have worked with him. She could see through me that i was worried so she said she would be there to offer any support. I have attended MDT meeting before, but not the one presenting, well today the table has turned since i was the most knowledgeable person per the patient having nursed him for four straight days, eight days cumulatively, ( counting the days in previous weeks). All through the morning, i was thinking what would i talk about? I decided to use the activities of daily living, having found a base i started filling the gaps in my head and when i got the time, i jotted few things on a paper. 1400hr, we were all seated, the doctors led by the consultant in charge of the patient's care, the physiotherapists, the Occupational therapist, the social work team, the community nurse, the pharmacist, my manager, the patient's relative who has the lasting power of attorney for health. Each department made presentations and questions were asked. when it was my time, i talked about the patient's ability to attend to personal hygiene and grooming, ability to eat and drink independently, ability to transfer from bed to chair and vice-versa, his continence, and bowel movement pattern, ability to recognize pain and ask for help. I talked about his preference for some drug form, that some drugs needed to be converted to liquid while some needed to be converted to injections that the community nurse could administer. i corroborated some facts made by the physiotherapist and stated some equipment the patient might need before discharge. In the end, the social work team and the community nurse came back to thank me for making their job and decision making simpler. I thought to myself, i have come a long way. |

She has to decide which she wants to do btw medicine and nursing but if she settles for nursing let her go to university straight. OJURONGBE1: Its been long I read something this smooth on Nairaland. Kudos sir . Here comes my question :how do you write so well , is it an inbuilt ability or you got this from years of consistent reading and practising ? I find it hard sometimes to convey my thoughts into words . There are times i write and I feel ashamed of myself because my words were badly put together.
Another question I would love your opinion on is: I have a 15 yr old cousin who's torn between studying medicine and Nursing ,but as it is, her 220 UTME score won't get her an invite for UI Post UTME, so i urged her to try science lab tech at Yabatech, get good grades in her forthcoming WAEC Exam and prepare well for next year. You might ask me why i am asking this question on her behalf ,well ,she's someone I took interest in ever since she lost her Dad when she was 8 . How a young girl would be so interested in her future amazes me .Each time I visit them, she always ask me to buy her books, share with me her term results laced with distinctions and how chemistry bores her but her lowest grade was 71. I have been trying in my little way to expose her on her dream course , got few text books , have her watch Grey Anatomy etc to gear her up but there's a limit to what I can do at the moment because of the financial implications . So, how good is a Nursing degree obtained from the university compared to school of Nursing? My Aunt attended Ogun state school of health (Nursing major) and i kid you not, she's extremely good. She once told me Nursing degrees are more of administrative nursing while school of health deals more with practicals.

OP it's bin a while, just checking on u amidst ds covid 19 crisis. God's protection upon us all. cchimaa: Hello travellanders,
I am a nurse in Nigeria.
I never planned relocating, but I wouldn’t want to bore us with my reasons for changing my mind. HOWEVER, THE MAJOR REASON IS MY CHILDREN’S FUTURE.
I became a nurse 15 years ago and majority of my mates are out of our dear country.
I have five (5) nursing diploma certificates, BNSc and MSc Nursing. Infact, I’ve started my Ph.D in Nursing Science (I’m suspending it anyway as I don’t know my bearing yet)
I have a fairly good job and my salary is a little above 200k.
A lot of my friends have encouraged me to relocate and work in Europe, but I had so much hope in Nigeria and was ‘team vacation’
My story changed August, this year.
So, I called a friend who relocated to the UK 14 years ago. She explained the process of relocating as a nurse to 5 different countries to me.
After discussion with my husband, parents and siblings, we decided that I should try that of UK.
I registered for IELTS and CBT that August and passed. Then, started the process on the nmc UK portal. I googled for an employer, got an agency, did interview and got the job. I paid the required fee.
My employer asked me to resume November, but I told them I wasn’t ready as everything happened so fast, and my decision letter wasn’t ready then. So, I used that as an excuse, although they felt disappointed. But I need more bonding with my kids as I won’t be traveling with them. They will have to join me after some months.
I’ve gotten my decision letter and visa now and will be moving before the end of January.
Why did I open this thread? 1. To learn from people that have done this in the past 2. To assist people going through the same process
I will answer questions concerning the process to the best of my ability and ask questions when I also need clarification (maybe when I want to start packing my bags)
IGNORE ALL ERRORS!!! |

I can feel her pain sha , d's house rent wahala no be small matter o. Soknown: My wife went for the IOM with the children after she has scheduled an appointment and paid the necessary fee. As usual she with IOM, she met a mammoth crowd in the hall. She was given the form to fill, she got to the point where she needed to put the address of the place she is going. She didn't know which address to put, she called me but i was at work. i usually put my phone on silence on the ward unless i have critical time bound medications that i need to set personal alarms for. She was calling for like 30 minutes, no reply from her man. Anger was setting in. My first break was between break was between 1015hr and 1030hr, sitting down for the first time since i resumed in the morning, i checked my phone, i was alarmed with the number of missed calls, i dashed out to call her. If i were in her shoes, i would be boiling with rage too. I am sorry could do a lot in a relationship so says a wise man, she became calm. Now the dilemma, should i give her the present address knowing that i will move out before she comes over, i decided to give her the Hospital's address, that is not changing anytime soon, moreover it is the address on the CoS. She did the x-ray and the children were examined but not subjected to x-ray. The x-ray report was reviewed by the physician attached to the agency and certificate issued to them with the special instruction not fold or allow the certificate to be wrinkled. In the evening, it was my turn to be angry when she told me she used motor bike on Mobolaji bank-anthony way as she was going back home with the children. How, why i mean four people on a bike, i was outraged, but i remembered i have done that in the past too. It is amazing how human mind can select what to remember or forget, whichever one that is convenient. I have a tripartite lifestyle now, go to work, come back home, go for agency work. Work on the ward is becoming more convenient, recently SASH increased the bank rate, so you earn almost what you will earn working with agencies so i decided to stick with doing bank shifts on my ward or some familiar wards. Working on the ward started becoming routine-like with few surprises now and then but overall manageable. The hierrachy of the ward has changed. The ward that i met when i resumed is not the substantive manager, The substantive manager has been on Marternity leave, due to come back fully in April, so she resumed 18 hours/week shift in March to ease her re-introduction into scheme of things. In April the matron who is her boss resigned, the substantive ward manager then applied for the matron post and she got it. So the position of the ward manager was then advertized openly, we expected that the person that has been standing in as the ward manager to apply for the post, but she declined, she said she does not want it, quite surprising. she said being a substantive ward manager will detract her career trajectory. So the band six lady that i worked with on my first day, applied and got the job, the lady that was standing in as the manager reverted to band six, quite strange. Spring was upon us, i started having issues with my eyes, itchy, watery eyes, could not see well, some says it was hay fever, but i know usually have hay fever, it was not like this. I went to Spec-savers, got my eyes checked, did well on the tests but not well enough, would need some augmentation, simply glasses. So i have to select a frame, paid for it and they will put the glasses in it to be collected at a later date. The glasses made me look like a village headmaster but since they do not know what a village headmaster look like here they started calling me Professor because of the glass and the name stuck like glue. I went back to the market looking for a house, a two bedroom apartment to rent in anticipation of my family. I renewed my registration with the letting agencies and online sites. Some landlords would say, they do not want fmaily with Children, some no children less than 10. No pets No smokers. All sort of conditions. Finally i got one very close to the town center, very lovely neighborhood. I booked viewing with the agent. I called on my friend to view it with me, to view through the 'ladies' eye. It was a very good apartment on St anne's road, two bdroom with free parking space, good energy rating, lovely non communal backyard garden, all £950 it was too good to be true. I told the agent i will see her in the office tomorrow and pay the withholding fee. I called her the following morning to check if she is in the office already only to be told that someone paid the with holding fee last night. I was furious with myself. I continued searching. I got another very good one, not close to the town center but close to a good school at £1100/cm, i inspected it alone with the agent, i love it so i paid for the withholding fee immediately, i do not want a repeat of what happened at the house on St anne's road. i got all the necessary forms. I sent out the reference forms, some came back after few days, after a week. the land lord said he is travelling so he would not have time to complete the process. so my money will be returned to me. I was dissapointed but kept searching...... |

Uhmmmmm tnk u so much I appreciate ds well detailed response. Soknown: It is possible, but you will not be able to use the accommodation provided by the trust for the family. I have a friend that came with hubby and daughter. She stayed in the accommodation but the family was with her relatives in another town. After the OSCE, she got a house for the family to move back together. Her daughter was schooling in the other town during the OSCE, when the family moved in together, she got another school for her. It's government responsibility to provide school for the children once you have made the application.
I have another friend that moved with her son, no relatives. Before she came, she has identified with a church, church members helped her to secure accommodation and sometimes helped her to look after the son when she was preparing for OSCE. She quickly got a car, because she was from a Caribbean country that drive same way as UK, she was still using her home country driving driving license.
My point is, everything is possible, it all depends on your level of support. |

You also have option to join organization that will ask you to go to first star hotel to have your 3-square meal everyday. Ingrate people like you! The food you are served in Luth or any other organization is just a complement and not compusory you must eat it.
You are been paid salary and other allowances, leave their complement food if you are not satisfied with it, go home and cook from your salary to eat what you like. And if you don't like it or appreciate little they are offering, leave their job and give room to those who are ready to appreciate little they offer |

If no,how has been the food before? You work 24hours? You are just a cheap lying brat,so you don't sleep,no bathing, you have been on duty since January 1 right? Liar. Why compare yourself with doctors? You want the same with them? For me both food are disgusting. I don't know your motive for this but stop being an ingrate. You receive salary, bring food from home or buy food. How many workers in Nigeria receive free meals at work? Nobody forced the institution to provide meals in the first instance nd even that is not asking too much to encourage workers who are risking dere lives and family to kip others safe. You really don't deserve a response dou,u sounds as pathethic as your leaders sreamsense: I know how you feel, but please, appreciate little offer you are given. After all, it is not compusory that you must eat it because you are been paid salary and other entitlement. Don't try to attract sympathy for yourself, you are there to work and not to eat or eat from your salary if you have higher taste.
You can also leave public service and go into private business if you want to eat according to your taste. The two foods for Dr and Nurses are nearly the same rubbish. You eat better when when you get home. Nurses own look smaller because of ratio of Nurses to Dr. If every Nurse should be served big chicken everyday, the hospital may go broke.
Fight for your regular payment of salary first and focus less on food to 'hold body and soul' together. After 24hrs work, you also have 24hrs for your shiftting, you can enjoy satisfactory meal in your house |

And the government keep complaining of brain drain,it's sad Sha. After this pandemic the way health workers will leave this kwantiry even the FG won't know wat hit dem. This is share irresponsiblity on the part of LASUTH leadership. SirVintageCock: Too bad. I don't know why we enjoy playing in this country. Someone volunteered to battle this pandemic with their life at stakes and you decides it is the appropriate time to do anyhow. To feed them trash even by Nigerian standard.
This is not the time to be politically correct. You can't feed your front-line soldiers sh!t and expect excellent results. A hungry Nigerian nurse/health worker is an atomic bomb especially in this pandemic cos this unpalatable food can cause someone to make mistakes. Just a tiny mistake here or there and we are done for.
Reject the food and heap it back to whomever initiated the idea of feeding you watery beans. Imagine rushing to the toilet in a HAMZAT suit even other western countries doesn't have enough of it. We don't even have enough to protect our health workers here. How can you feed someone suited up in the suit, a suit that can only be worn once and discard watery beans.
That person needs to be fired. Period. |

It's very derogatory for LASUTH as an institution to be seen to engage in d's act. As Frontline staffs who are on duty working 24hrs or more, have a look at the food served to doctors and other healthcare workers for 2 days on a roll. When will this perceived inequality stop, even the cleaners deserves better.

Was abt asking of u ,it's bin a few days u posted. Stay safe everyone, whoever tink we signed up to die can volunteer to work in d hospital during D's period nd let's see aw long dey last at it. We also av family fatima04: Seriously, any healthcare professional still actively going to work right now deserves great accolades oo. It is really ridiculous that they have to fight for something as basic as adequate PPE to do their jobs when construction professionals and Soldiers sent off to fight other countries has standardized and up to date weaponry.
I believe if half of funds designated for fighting other peoples wars is transferred to NHS, we would not be in this mess. When my hubby told me they ration the "tissue" mask for 4hrs, I thought it was his trust but now I can see its a general rule across NHS most likely and this so called mask is not in any way adequate for protection.
If the government can do their part by providing a good environment and equipment to work, people will be willing to fight Covid 19 aggressively and uphold their Hippocratic oath because we definitely don't send soldiers to War zone without adequate intelligence and standardized weaponry to vaporize enemies.
The constant fear families of healthcare professionals face EVERYDAY right now in this country and back home considering a large percentage are immigrants deserves them to also consider the oath made to their families, because my people e no easy with kids, pregancy and vulnerable parents living with some of us.
