Mike Ozekhome, we remember your desire corruptly to claim a house in the UK, nonetheless we’ve heard your point. For your proposal to be considered, the constitution would need to be amended. As it stands, only the president can make appointments, and the senate provides clearance. Even under your suggestion, influence would still remain. Olodo, northern presidents appoint southern INEC chairmen, while southern presidents appoint northern INEC chairmen. Before Tinubu, we’ve only had two southern presidents, and he is yet to appoint one—though he’s expected to follow the same pattern by choosing a northerner. What Bashir is pointing out is that Nigeria has had far more northern presidents than southern ones. This imbalance should spark serious questions about fair representation in one of the country’s most important democratic institutions. |
