PoliticsAhead 2019: 25 Political Parties Gang Up Against INEC, Make Huge Demand by youngmoney95(op): 2:38pm On Mar 09, 2017
The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has demanded a review and amendment of the 2010 Electoral Act before the 2019 polls

A conglomeration of 25 Nigerian political parties acting on the platform of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), made the demand on Wednesday.

The parties also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission in its recent step to discipline erring officials involved in irregularities, corruption and malpractices in the Rivers State rerun elections.

While expressing satisfaction with the ongoing war against corruption, they prayed for the quick recovery of President Muhammadu Buhari for him to complete the reforms being put in place by his administration, especially the crusade against graft.

The parties include the Labour Party, Progressive Peoples Alliance, Allied Congress Party of Nigeria, Accord Party, African Democratic Congress, Democratic Peoples Congress, National Conscience Party and Progressive Peoples Alliance.

The conglomeration of parties also had the Advanced Congress of Democrats, Peoples Redemption Party, United Peoples Party, Peoples Progressive Party, Peoples Party of Nigeria, Independent Democrats and Better Nigeria Progressive Party in attendance, among others.

Specifically, the parties, which recommended the scrapping of State Independent Electoral Commissions to protect the nation’s democracy, passed a vote of confidence in the National Chairman of the LP, Alhaji Abdulsalam Abdulkadir.

National Chairman of IPAC, Muhammad Naldo, made the demands at a press briefing after IPAC’s emergency meeting held at the national secretariat of the Accord Party in Abuja.

He said: “We have 25 political parties here endorsing this resolution. IPAC is calling on the constitutional and electoral committees to work assiduously with the National Assembly to ensure effective and prompt amendments to the 2010 Electoral Act before the 2019 general election.

“We are making these demands because we want our democracy to be well protected. All those grey areas that have been very controversial and creating confusion should be addressed, including party supremacy. Let political parties be responsible for the nomination of candidates for election.

“We are also recommending the scrapping of SIECs to allow a level-playing field for all political parties to participate in elections. The SIECs are using INEC apparatuses to conduct elections, including party registers and ballot boxes. The only thing they don’t provide is the manpower. And if INEC can provide manpower for all elections, why can’t it do same at state and local government levels? The SIECs are not independent. So, we want an independent electoral umpire to conduct elections at state and LG levels.”

PoliticsNigerians React To Efcc’s Anti-corruption Fight by youngmoney95(op): 4:33pm On Mar 05, 2017
Some Nigerians have commended the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for its current fight against corruption.

They said in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the exercise was making impact, most especially the commission’s arrest of former public officers.

Dr Fredrick Fasehun, founder and President of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC),lauded the EFCC for beaming its searchlight on finances of some individuals that had once held public offices.

Fasehun said the arrest of the former Group Managing Director, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Dr Andrew Yakubu, and the recovery of 9.8 million dollars and 74, 000 pounds from his home, was a “breakthrough’’.

Fasheun, who is also the National Chairman of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), also commended the final forfeiture of over N66 billion linked to the former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Allison-Madueke to the Federal Government, as ordered by the Court.

The UPN chairman urged the agency to continue the anti-corruption fight, but cautioned it against selective arrest.

“EFCC has a lot to do by bringing to book those it thinks have undermined the constitution of this country and looted the treasury,’’ he said.

Similary, Dr Yunisa Tanko, National Chairman, National Conscience Party (NCP), commended the agency for its fight against corruption, but advised that it should deploy scientific means of investigating and recovering money allegedly siphoned from various treasury across the country.

He also advised the agency to ensure timely arraignment and prosecution of anybody found to have looted the treasury.

Tanko, who is also a member of the National Peace Committee, however, said that arrests of some public office holders were long-overdue, and implored the anti-graft agency to beam its searchlight on all nooks and crannies of the country.

He said this had become imperative because in spite of the anti-corruption drive of the present administration, Nigeria still ranked high among the corrupt countries in the world.

While commending the EFCC for the anti-corruption fight, Tanko, however, said that a cross section of people in the country believed that the commission was still being selective in its operations.

“EFCC has a lot to do to earn the respect of the society because people still see them as acting out the master’s script,’’ he said.

Mr Saminu Abdullahi, a trader, also commended the commission’s fight against graft, but described its manner of arrest of suspects as “crude’’.

Abdullahi also said that in spite of the agency’s best efforts and capacity to track down offenders, it lacked the modern technique of operations.

He advised the EFCC to exercise its discretionary powers within the ambit of the law, without violating human rights in its operations.

He also urged Nigerians to support the Acting Chairman of the commission, Mr Ibrahim Magu, to succeed in the commission’s anti-graft war.

“We must all support the patriotic efforts of the Acting Chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, at tackling corruption, so far.

“I also am appealing to the Senate to confirm his appointment to enable him to do more,’’ the trader said.

Mrs Abigei Nze, an Accountant, also lauded the EFCC for doing “ a good job, so far’’, especially its arrest of highly-placed former public officers.

Nze said but for the bold operations of the EFCC, “the nation would have been consumed by corruption’’.

PoliticsPDP Crisis: Makarfi Group Denies Forming New Party by youngmoney95(op): 4:01pm On Mar 05, 2017
The Ahmed Makarfi faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has denied being behind moves to establish a new party called Advanced Peoples Democratic Party, APDP.

Some media reports have suggested that the faction has applied to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, for registration.

Sources were quoted as saying the faction took the decision because it has become apparent that the court-recognised national chairman, Ali Sheriff, is not genuinely ready for reconciliation.

A report by The Nation on Friday quoted INEC spokesperson, Nick Dazang, as saying that the APDP is one of 70 new parties seeking registration.

However, the spokesperson of Makarfi group, Dayo Adeyeye, said on Sunday his faction was not behind the newly proposed party.

“We state clearly and without ambiguity that the National Caretaker Committee of the PDP is not in anyway involved in the plans to register any party by the name APDP or any other party for that matter,” he said in a statement.

He also said It is “unthinkable” that the faction, which enjoys the support of all the recognised organs of the party will contemplate such a move.

Mr. Adeneye, however, hinted that some individuals within his faction’s PDP may be behind the proposed new party.

“We however acknowledge and recognize the rights of party members to seek alternative platform to actualize their political dreams which is an inalienable right guaranteed by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he said.

Several lawsuits filed by the two PDP factions after its May 21, 2016 national convention in Port Harcourt led to the recognition of Mr. Sheriff as the authentic chairman by the Court of Appeal, Port Harcourt Division, two weeks ago.

The Makarfi faction said it has appealed to the Supreme Court.

Despite the Appeal Court ruling, Mr. Adeyeye in his statement said the National Caretaker Committee is the one “holding leadership power in the Party in trust for the millions of Party faithfuls who instituted the Committee at the National Convention.

“Whatever decision that will be taken on the PDP brand shall be taken by the owners of the party, i.e the party members at a properly constituted national convention, and not by a few individuals no matter how highly placed.

“For the records, no decision has been taken that the PDP should be abandoned and a new party formed out of the current structure. At least, no such proposal is before the National Caretaker Committee as at this moment,” he said.

Mr. Adeyeye expressed the belief that the issues before the Supreme Court would be resolved “on the side of truth, and justice will be served in the interest of peace”.‎

The spokesperson added that with the “political solution” as the alternative dispute resolution being suggested by some highly placed individuals and groups in the party, “albeit without prejudice to the Appeal before the Supreme Court, we will like to appeal for calm among all Party members and allow the reconciliation efforts to move forward”.

PoliticsConstitutional Dilemma: Buhari Gets Two Weeks Ultimatum To Return To Nigeria by youngmoney95(op): 8:36pm On Mar 04, 2017
An advocacy group, Concerned Nigerians, has given Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari a two weeks ultimatum to return to Nigeria and resume his office as the President as well as continue the mandate given to him by Nigerians during the 2015 elections.

The group said should President Buhari fail to return within fortnight, it would storm the streets of Nigeria on peaceful protest.

It said in a statement signed by its convener, Prince Deji Adeyanju on Saturday, that although President Buhari handed-over presidential powers to his vice and now Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, he still on two occasions performed two Presidential functions even while abroad on medical vacation, a development the group describe as a “constitutional dilemma”.

The group said President Buhari must return to Nigeria since even the circumstances surrounding his actual health status have been kept secret from Nigerians who ought to know the situation concerning their president.

“Today – March 4th, 2017 marks 45 days of President Muhammadu Buhari’s absence from his office as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and from the country as a whole on a medical vacation in the United Kingdom.”

“During this period, he has not made any public appearances and has only clandestinely “communicated” with very few people.

“Furthermore, details of President Buhari’s health status have been kept away from the generality of Nigerians while his media team and other members of his cabinet/party make conflicting comments regarding his health.”

“We acknowledge that during this period, President Buhari has satisfied constitutional requirements by transmitting letters to the National Assembly handing power over to his Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, on an acting capacity.”

“However, during this period, President Buhari has created a constitutional dilemma by carrying out official functions. On February 13, 2018 in a capacity as President of Nigeria, he spoke to President Donald Trump of the United States with respect to bilateral relations between the two countries.”

“On Thursday March 2nd, 2017 again in a capacity as President of Nigeria President Buhari spoke to the King of Morocco with respect to bilateral relations between the two countries as well as Morocco’s application to become a member of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).”

“These actions, as well as President Buhari’s continued vacation, constitute a constitutional dilemma capable of destabilising the country. President Buhari’s insistence on performing the functions of President after having transmitted power to Ag. President Osinbajo in effect creates de-facto and de-jure, which does not bode well for the country.”

“To this end, we urge President Buhari to return to the country on or before the 60th day after which he left the country (15 days from today) failing which we will begin a series of peaceful processions across the country aimed at sensitizing the public as to the legal & constitutional dilemma created by President Buhari’s continued absence from office and his insistence on performing official functions while away.”

The Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Diaspora Affairs, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has disclosed that ailing President, Buhari has mandated his team on diaspora affairs to ensure that all Nigerian girls trafficked for sex overseas are brought back to the country.

She stated this while commenting on the issue of human trafficking during a programme on AIT.

Dabiri-Erewa said that no fewer than 41 girls ranging between 16 – 28 years have voluntarily returned to Nigeria from Mali as a result of collaboration between the Nigerian Embassy and the Malian authorities anchored on mutual agreement.

She called for the education of children against embarking on trips to places they are not familiar with; stressing that girls who are trafficked for sex believed that they were going overseas to engage in white-collar jobs.

She said: “Now on the issue of human trafficking, 41 girls have voluntarily returned to Nigeria from Mali.

“President Buhari has charged us to bring back all these girls trafficked for sex.

“The Nigerian Embassy in Bamako leveraged on the NAF Charlie-130 Hercules aircraft to airlift these girls that were victims of human trafficking.

“The successful repatriation of the girls was as a result of collaboration between the Nigerian Embassy and the Malian authorities anchored on mutual agreement.

“We need to educate our children especially the ladies not to go to where they don’t know.”

EducationJAMB Explains Why Candidates Can No Longer Apply To Two Public Universities See by youngmoney95(op): 6:26pm On Mar 02, 2017
The Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) has disclosed why it restricted candidates from choosing two public universities during the 2017 online registration.

Fabian Benjamin, JAMB’s Head of Media and Information, told PREMIUM TIMES on Saturday that the choice of public universities was restricted to one but candidates can choose as many colleges of education and polytechnics as they want.

The new measure by the board means that candidates may select a public university and a private university, but not two public universities.

The new update was revealed by JAMB via its official twitter handle @JambHQ on Friday.

It reads: “candidates can select NCE as their choice up to three times I.e 1st choice, 2nd choice and 3rd choice.

“But they are not allowed to select two public universities as choices. If candidates select a public university as their degree awarding choices, they are allowed to select a private university as another choice.”

Mr. Benjamin told PREMIUM TIMES that the Board took the restrictions because candidates hardly get admissions into their second and third choice universities.

“Yes we restricted the choice to one but candidates can choose as many colleges or polytechnics,” he said.

“We discovered it was of no use choosing a university as second choice when in actual sense they can’t even accommodate their first choices,” the JAMB official said.

Candidates have however cried foul over this new information as they lamented that the board is indirectly enforcing the choice of private university on them.

The candidates also lamented due to the huge sum paid as school fees in private universities stating that they are not affordable by most Nigerian parents.

“The fees nko? Jamb go help the students pay the fees for the private universities? You can’t force somebody to attend private universities,” a Twitter user, Robinson said.

“No, he did not go to Malaysia, he did not travel. He has not been out of this country since last year. Those that reported that he travelled did not get their facts right,” he said.

“It was shortly after they said he was remanded in prison that he conducted an interview with some journalists just to clear the air. Throughout December, he was at LTV because he has a stand there. His Ebony stand at LTV closed on December 30, 2016.”

Top 5 Safety Tips for Women Travelling Alone
OlofofoGist NG hour ago LifeStyle
While travelling is for a variety of reasons, traveling to explore the unknown is an experience that is exhilarating. Besides being a way to pass time, just the realization there are hundreds of tourist destinations in Africa, should be enough to awaken the explorer in you.

Over the years it has become quite normal for a guy to travel solo, on the other hand the female lone traveler isn’t as common and evokes worry.
Clearly society perceives solo female travelers as easy preys, species who could easily be in danger.
Nowadays the ladies are taking the plunge into the world of the lone traveler, we salute them and offer them a few safety tips below.
kiss kiss kiss

1. Dressing up
The way you dress creates your first impression; things always go right when you come off as smart and confident.
A hint of weakness could make you a target when traveling, dressing provocatively or extravagant could create an experience you would like to forget.
Dress for the occasion, when in Rome dress like the Romans; when visiting a conservative place observe the people, you wouldn’t like to be the only one wearing a bikini at the beach.

Blending in with the locals when visiting metropolitan areas, dress comfortably with light attires. If your trip involves a lot of exploring on foot, wear comfortable flats, loafers or sneakers.

2. Engage Yourself
While what you wear my might be your first impression, how you engage and communicate with those around you completes the picture.
Make your mark in certain places; engage people around in conversations so your absence will be noticed in places near your hotel, tour bus and campground.
Also stay connected with friends and family online; make use of apps like whatsapp and BBM to check in.

3. Move on, don’t over indulge
While it's good to engage people around, you should avoid getting too comfortable with strangers. If possible create the impression you are in town with a friend but had to split up. Avoid exchanging personal information when making calls in open places; you never know who is listening in.
Don’t over indulge men; you might need to buy a fake wedding ring to fend off guys you are not interested in. The ring helps create the perception you are not traveling alone and your hubby just might be in the neighborhood.

4. Avoid being Alone
The idea is traveling alone, clearly there will be times you are going to be alone, however there are sometimes you should avoid being alone.
When walking alone down a road at night, try pairing up with other ladies along that route while striking up conversations. While exploring you might find yourself in a shady place or just feel uncomfortable in a room, get creative in exiting, for example you could invent a fake important call you need to take outside.

5. Stay Safe
During your trip make sure you never let your guard down, avoid accepting drinks from even acquaintances. It’s quite common with predators to slip a pill into the drink of a girl who they define as alone. Even at that if you must drink, never get drunk.
Keep in mind these few tips and your trip will be fun, safe and an experience worth remembering.

In the final group standings, Japan, Spain and Nigeria were all tied on 6 points, but the Falconets were edged out due to their huge goals deficit.

CrimeSingapore Executes Nigerian For Drug Trafficking by youngmoney95(op): 6:31pm On Nov 19, 2016
The Singaporean government has executed a 38-year-old Nigerian man for drug trafficking after he was caught with 2.6kg of cannabis.

In a statement, the central narcotics bureau said Chijioke Stephen Obioha, had his death sentence carried out today at Changi prison complex.

Obioha, an Industrial Chemistry graduate from the University of Benin, had originally moved to Singapore in 2005 hoping to be a footballer.

He was arrested in 2007 by drug officers who found 14 blocks of cannabis in a bag he was carrying and another 14 blocks in the flat he was renting.

Under Singapore law, anyone caught with more than 500 grams of cannabis can be sentenced to death.

Obioha’s execution followed a lengthy legal process.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, had on Thursday described the sentencing to death of a Nigerian in Singapore for drug related offences as heartbreaking despite repeated calls for Nigerians to desist from criminal activities like drug peddling.
In a statement by her Special Assistant on Media, Abdur-Rahman Balogun in Abuja, she said that since Singapore is determined to enforce its laws as a deterrent to drug trafficking, which has reduced as a result of its stringent capital punishment, nothing much can be done except to continue to appeal.

She reiterated her appeal to Nigerians to avoid drug peddling in their host countries as laws of countries, whether acceptable or not, will be difficult to influence.

“While we regret the death sentence passed on the Nigerian, we once again appeal to Nigerians to avoid crimes like drug trafficking with most countries especially in Asia declaring zero tolerance for drug trafficking,” Dabiri-Erewa stated.
