Why Fake News is Dangerous

The danger of fake news lies in its ability to appear like any other news story when taken at face
value. However, the intent behind publishing fake news is to deliberately mislead readers into
believing one set of “facts” over another. Creators of fake news carefully craft attention-grabbing
headlines that appeal to a certain group of people (Republicans, Democrats, teens, Millennials,
etc.) to get the most clicks and ad revenue possible. The majority of information found within
these fake news stories is misleading, if not demonstrably false, which can lead to confusion and
conflict in the general population.

How to Spot Fake News

Fake news can be challenging to spot with only limited knowledge of the internet and social
media. There are several key questions students can ask when presented with any new piece of
information that can help identify what is or isn’t fake news:
The Source: Who is the publisher? Do they publish other information largely recognized as
accurate and unbiased? Is the author properly attributed? Are there credible references?
Is the domain name or website address similar to that from another more well-recognized
website.

The Site’s Appearance: Is the grammar and sentence structure poor? Is there too much
punctuation? Is there a copyright or disclaimer? Does the site appear very basic (minimal
color / design) and poorly organized? Are there too many ads?

The Content: Is it beyond belief? Is it too funny, too sad, too scary, too uplifting? Are
there details in the text that just don’t make sense? Is the tone sensational? Is it just
trying to sell you something or get you to click on something? Is it promising you something
no one else can give you? When was it published and/or updated? Is it an old story that
just looks new?

The following are the different categories of people you will meet in night classes in our various higher institution.
1. Customer care agents: this category of people will keep on receiving calls from the time the came to class till the sleep off. If you sit beside them “sorry” and it is more among ladies.

2. The lookers: this category of people will make sure that they look at any slightest movement around them. If they ever see a beautiful/handsome girl/guy then they will never cease catching a glimpse at her/him. You will even wonder if these people actually came to study or to observe others studying.

3. The late comers: this is common among girls. When you get to class from 4-7pm, you will discover that the class is empty. They are waiting till 9:30 when their presence will be noticed.

4. The preachers: I am sure this set of people annoy every reader in that class but nobody could pick the courage to rebuke them because nobody wants to be tagged enemy of God’s word. The worst part is that these preachers come to preach when they are tired of reading and want to stretch themselves.

5. The itinerant readers: they are people who move in and out of the reading room every ten minutes. Sometimes you see them walking about the corridors. In an extreme cases they can read in four to six classes in a night.

6. The unarmed robbers: yes i call them unarmed because they look very innocent when they are reading beside you waiting for the operation time. They steal things like phones, reading lamp, purse/ wallet, laptops, wrist-watches, textbooks etc depending on the person’s level of expertise and stealing intentions.

7. The chronic sleepers: Hmmm, this set of people will just enter the class and lay their face on the desk and sleep off. They will not open their book from the time they came in till the time they left.
They are always victims of the category of people above. The bad thing about these set of people is that they snore without regards and they fart without conscience.

8. The ash-crammers: they are our first classers, they will start reading from the time they came in till dawn. Sometimes i wonder what they will be doing during the day.

9. The eaters: they will buy biscuit, viju milk, lacasera, gala, chewing gum, in fact all the snacks in the world just to attend night class. You will wonder if you are in nursery class or university night class.

10. The pingers: this set of people will never let their phones be. Some will even come with up to three phone. Pressing their phone every now and then that you will wonder if they are actually studying or proof-reading.

11. The toasters: if i mention everything without mentioning our guys and babes who come to night class to look for partners then my list is incomplete. This is for people who are single and searching every night.

12. The last of it all is the couples: they will come to class together, continue talking, chatting and touching each other until they are tired then off they go. They have gone to night class.

The past few days have been turbulent for the Muslim students in the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB). The University management labeling "niqab" as an immoral and lousy dressing has attracted enormous attention to the school. Muslims, particularly the sisters in niqab have been on the spotlight, tongues have raged against them, the good, the bad and the ugly. Everybody seems to be commenting, even the ignorant.

One of these comments is that of a concerned Muslim, the Director of MURIC, who claims to works in the dawah field.

In an article traced to him, he admonished these sisters to delay the use of niqab till after their graduation, citing that where their rights as Muslims begin is where others' start from.

Although he expressed the fact that Nigeria is a secular state, he forgot to acknowledge that fundamental rights of every citizen, that everybody has equal rights: the right or freedom to practice any religion without hindrance or victimization. So, I wonder what informed this statement of his.

Is he opining that ladies that go around almost nude have more rights than those that chose to cover themselves? Or are sisters in niqab less human or less citizens to the skimpily dressed ones, or perhaps, is wearing of niqab part of the ways Muslims exceed the limitations he talked about? These are questions begging for answers from him.

He also called that sisters should stop using niqab because of its security implications. I do not want to assume that the next we would be called to is forgoing another part of our religion, because we want to be security conscious or mayhap seem liberal.

If security is one of the major concerns the institution is raising as the basis of their ban, a well known security measure is the screening of students at entry and exit points of university, in addition to the displaying of identity cards by students. This is the practice in some institutions in the Southwest and especially in the North, where the most stringent security measures are in place.

He also stated that sisters should shun their niqab because the ummah is in need of more university graduates. This logic displayed by the scholar baffles me. Shall we continue to be subjugated in our country because we need to produce more Muslim graduates? Is wearing of niqab an exclusion criteria to attending public institutions or graduating from universities? Or are we advising that these sisters should become second class citizens because they chose to study in a public university that is even funded by our collective resources?

Gone is the era of trampling upon the rights of Muslims, fixing examination times at Jumu'ah period and unjustly victimizing of Muslim students. The world has moved beyond the bigotry displayed by the management of FUNAAB and they should be conscious of that.

The verse of the Qur'an admonishing us to call to the way of Allah with wisdom should not be used as an argumentative reference to becoming mute when one's right is been infringed upon. The moment we fail to speak against injustice is the moment we stop living.

Islam is way beyond the keypads of phones or computers, and obviously not built on sheer rationalization.

Muslim elders should kindly desist from discouraging our youths if they are incapable of encouraging them.

I therefore urge the Muslim students and stakeholders in FUNAAB to peacefully, logically and intellectually engage the school management on this unfortunate matter.

The management of the Federal University of Agriculture (FUNNAB) has struck a big blow to Muslims
by placing a ban on the use of Naqob (face veil) worn by female Muslims. this happened yesterday,
16th October, 2017 when the school erected a bill board with pictures of nude, tattooed, immodest
dressing of ladies and placed veiled Muslim lady at the centre, tagged as banned.
I wonder when all these discrimination against Muslims will come to an end. We continue deceiving
ourselves, saying we are all Nigerians and Muslims are being treated as second class citizens most
especially in all government establishments where Christians are having upper hand.
It was gathered that before now, Muslim sisters in the school have been facing series of challenges;
some were barred from entering lecture hall, taking test and doing the exam, especially in the
recent past semester.
In his remarks, the school’s acting Vice Chancellor, when contacted, reported that the ban of veil,
tagged as immoral is a decision of the University Senate at its 211th statutory meeting. The
Muslims of the institution complained that, despite of being a government school, it was hell for
Muslims.
Tagging our Allah’s given dressing code immoral and lousy is humiliating to all Nigerian Muslims. We
must all rise up to defend our Islam from this sworn enemy that never wants us develop. They
have made us known and realised the extent of their hatred toward our Islam. it is time to
mobilise and defend our Islam from this Christian enemy.

Your O' level result: anyone with incomplete O' level result will not and cannot be considered for admission this also applies to candidates that filled wrong subject combination but if your are to be considered for wrong subject combination your course may be changed (You may note like that). It's important to fill a relevant O' level result to ensure a hitch free Admission.

5. The course of your choice: The demand and the requirements for all courses varies. Some courses are more demanding while some are not. Take for example over 12000 candidates that applied for medicine in Uniben scored above 200 which is the school required cut-off and guess what only 100 student will be admitted into that department, hope you can see what I am talking about

1. You Will Continue To reapply Every Session: Your hostel fee only lasts for one session, stressful right? . The school sends every student packing at the end of each session. You will always have to reapply for hostel and you may not be lucky to secure a space the next time. The condition to reapply is that you must first pay your school fees. This switch will make you meet different room mates who may not be as nice as those in your first room.
2. Bad Habits And Privacy: You may be wondering how many persons stay per room in the school hostel. The number could be lesser than five for a high quality school hostel. However, the number generally ranges from 8 to 17 persons per room (I am not exaggerating). In Unilag, Uniben, aau and other hostels, you have so many persons living in one room. This will really result to privacy issue. You can’t have personal private life or private property. Your things could be taken without permission and you could meet random persons “crashing” in your bed space. Hostel is very annoying since you will see persons with different philosophies and raw behaviours. You will come across fellow students who may seem psychopathic schizophrenic. The habits displayed there is something else.
3. Dirty School Toilets And Hostel Environment: The School hostel toilets are generally dirty and smell bad… Some students defecate without flushing while other leave feces behind on the floor. It is very disgusting that I won’t want to dwell on that. Many students living in the hostel are dirty and as such mess up the school hostel environment. You will notice different odors in the hostels.
4. Bad Influence And Robbery Issues: With such number of persons in the hostel, there will certainly be bad eggs. Remember, evil communication corrupts good manners. You can change from good, amazing, soft and God fearing boy/girl to a bad girl/boy overnight. You are not immune, it can happen to many persons. This influence can begin from the music, chat, and interactions that happen in the hostel. Another bad thing in the school hostel is that students steal a lot. People steal clothes, boxers, pants, laptops, phones, slippers, bucket, shoes, headset, pot, and many other properties in the hostel. Some of my belongings like clothes, electronic gadget and other was stolen while in the hostel . Although people could break into your house to steal when you stay off campus, however, little domestic stealing is rare.
5. Heat And Bed Bugs: Uniben hostel especially the popularly known Hall 3 and Hall 4 and many other schools hostels are breeding environments for bed bugs. With that number in the room and everyone cooking simultaneously, you could imagine the heat that would be generated. Hostel is not a place for comfort at all.
Conclusion:
It is all up to you to decide whether to stay in the school hostel or not. You already have all the points and comparisons you need to make decision. However, I will advice year one students to stay in the hostel… After your 100L you could then decide whether to continue in the hostel or not.
