Are you among those students who will read, read, and read ; or study for eight stretch hours and nothing to show for it. You get to exam hall and discover you could not remember anything. Oh! I see, you have concluded that your memory isn’t good enough, or maybe you don’t know how to learn fast.

Yeah you are right! Some of us used to think like that. But the truth is there is no such thing as a “bad memory”, and everyone can improve their memory, as long as you are not suffering from memory loss as a medical condition.
It is easy to master and memorize anything you want all you need is to figure out the type of memory you have and the learning skills that work for you perfect. As individuals differs in outlook, character – so do they differs in learning skills. Haven’t you noticed it that it is not everyone that love studying in the night or are you not aware that scientist proves that night is not the best time to study.

To memorize fast or to improve your learning skill you need to understand the kind of learning group you fall in the learning
system. I will discuss the three major learning system and you be able to figure where you fall in. However before that,
understand that learning fast requires you to:

Have a Positive Mindset: Stop thinking that you have a “bad memory.” Convince yourself that you do have a good memory
that will improve. Stop seeing others as having better memory than yours, stop thinking you are only good with reading
(English, related objectives) and never with math or quantitative.

Have an organized life: An organized life leads to organized memory, if you hardly remember where you keep your notes,
documents, wrist watch and others items how would you remember, what you just learned. Improved organization can help
free up your powers of concentration so that you can remember less routine things.
Why not set a routine for everything you are doing. Decides to keep all your note in one place, your pen, bangles and others in
specific location that way you will be more organized. Plan your activities before hand.

Have a Healthy Lifestyle: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is a key to developing an improved memory. Get enough sleep.
Sleeping improves your neuron-plasticity – your brain’s ability to grow – which enhances the brain’s ability to control behavior
and memory. The amount of sleep we get affects the brain’s ability to recall recently learned information according to study
carried in Harvard university .

Exercise regularly: Study has shown that regular aerobic exercise improves circulation and efficiency throughout the body
including the brain and can help ward off the memory loss that comes with aging. It is also argued that exercise makes you to be more alert, improving your picture – mental memory.

Mind your eating habit: Understand that eating heavy meal before reading is more like a waste of time, because your body will surely send signal to your brain that this body needs rest – then comes sleep. Also never try to read on an empty stomach except where you don’t have choice. Try taking light meal, snacks or even fruit to reduce the urge for food.

Three Kinds of Learners With Different Learning Skills

1. Visual Learners: These are the group of people who visualize things faster with their mind power and object like information seek in the head faster than others. You fall in this group if:
You visualize things as you learn them, you picture the whole situation as if you were there when it happened.
Information on pictures, charts, or diagrams is much easier to remember than the same information presented to you verbally.
You remember pictorial information faster than verbal, audible ones, you understand better when you read than when you listen to same.
You’re able to read and understand people by their body language, knowing what they’re really thinking, even as they say something else, and very much aware of your environment.
Tips For Effective Learning – Visual Learner
Stay away from distraction:[i][/i] Always stay away from fun catching object, no TV, Group of people, Cinemas, always look out for quiet environment. If possible live outside the school hostel. When studying in the library, face the wall as the last person in the library to be sure you are not seeing people entering and leaving the library.
Highlight the keyword when reading: [/b]This technique work perfectly well for my friend. When he is reading he highlight every key word with his pen and ensure they stick in his head. During exam time he scan his note with those keyword. It work perfectly well for him.
[b]Try chewing gum during mathematics. It is one of the secrets of mastering and solving any math problem. It works really well to improve function in the Hippocampus, an area in your brain directly related to memory
Draft out your own study note: Developing your own note from your lecturer materials help you to read fast and understand with speed. As you are preparing that note you are getting used to it. So it gives you opportunity to say it in your own language and style.
Move around. Pace around the room while studying and repeating the information to yourself. By walking around, you will use both your right and left brain and will memorize the material much easier.
Highlight your points with arrow or image: [/b]Just represent all your point with visual object that will help you remember so fast.
For instance, let say one of your point is “improved memory leads to happiness, you can simply draw sketch image of a happy person close to the point.
[b]2. Auditory Learners: These are the class of people who perform better by hearing things, and can retain information that comes to them orally, you’re. You fall in this group if:
You have musical talents, and the ability to hear tones, rhythms, and individual notes in a chord or an ensemble setting.
You easily remember verbal information that you hear either in conversations or during your lecture hours.
You have a well-developed vocabulary, an appreciation for words, and strong language skills, picking up new languages relatively easily.
You’re a good speaker, and can carry on interesting conversations, articulating your ideas clearly.
Tips for effective Learning – Auditory Learners
Pay attention in class and during conversations: This kind of individuals learn fast when listening to the wordings and audio. You must always be in the class and avoid any form of distraction while in the lecture room.
Record some of your lecture note: Start by recording some of your lecture note, listen to it and see how you perform on it after some self-test. If you learn better then stick to it and take advantage of same. Just take your note read them aloud and record it as you read out, play it often so you get used to it.
Also try taping lectures to help you both fill in the gaps in your notes, and to hear the information presented again. Listening to it a second or third time can often be enough to cause the information to stick without much more effort. This is a practical skill in making first class in the university.
Take advantage of repetition: Use verbal and listening repetition to help you remember the order of things. Take sentence by sentence and try repeating them one at a time until you’re able to say them without the paper.
Repeat this process until you no longer need your note to answer basic question without your note. Practice this step time with time then until you are good to go.
Take a short break walk. It’s important to keep your mind fresh, so once you think you have something roughly memorized, take a 20- to 30-minute break. Do something that makes you feel relaxed and happy, like playing game, watching jokes, anything to relax your brain.
Memorize your favorite song or poem until you can say it to yourself without any help. Try to do this often
3. Analytical Learner: This group belongs to individuals who learn faster by acting. They learn faster with demonstration/practice. They are often more mathematically inclined than the other two type of learners. You fall in this group if:
You learn best when you are hands-on––moving, doing, and touching help make the information real to you.
You love demonstrating .our view with body movements.
You remember events by what happened, but not necessarily what was said or seen.
You tend to be adventurous and easily distracted, finding it hard to stay put for long periods.
You don’t like sitting in classrooms when there are things you could do that would teach you more. Or you hardly stay two hours reading but can stay a whole day practicing something.
Tips for effective Learning – Analytical Learners
Practice and learn: Try writing what you learn as you are learning it, if you are reading on how to design web, try every step you learn practically that way the process will stick into your head. Always do a self-practice test in the process of learning.
Be creative: Act out or pretend to be the object, trying to mimic every detail of the object. Try using your hand to read, figure out other approaches to what you are reading. If you discover other steps – ask yourself if your own point relates to the others one
Break down objects: For instance, if you want to memorize list a phone number. 123446332067 you can break this number down into 1234-4633-2067. This way it becomes very easier to memorize the number than it original state.
You can use acronyms: This one work very well for me while in the university. What I normally do is to take each point keyword first alphabet and make word from them. Let say you have four points why university education is good. Take the first alphabet of each point keyword and thereafter make word at of all of them.

NB: Memorizing is not cramming: Cramming only works to put information in your short-term memory. You may remember the information for your exam the next day, but you will barely recall the unit when it’s time to take the final.

Also, the needs to intensify the training of a professional workforce for a newly independent Nigeria (as at October 1st, 1960) in
search of rapid industrialisation, and economic development. Due to the fact that the country lacked the requisite workforce to
actualise the people’s dream. There was a big gulf to be filled, and that required establishing many more universities.
University of Lagos (Unilag) main campus is located at Akoka, Yaba. It presently has three Campuses in Yaba and Surulere.
Whereas two of its Campuses are located in Yaba. its College of Medicine is located in Idi-Araba, Surulere.
It is remarkable that all the three campuses are located in the Mainland of Lagos. Its main campus is largely surrounded by the
scenic view of the Lagos lagoon on 802 acres of land in Akoka, North Eastern part of Yaba.
The university has fourteen academic units with twelve Faculties, namely, Arts, Business Administration, Clinical Sciences, Dental

The Hall comprises of both male hostel and female hostel. The priority order for allocation into the Halls of Residence is as
follows: final year students, Students’ Union Executives, foreign students, sportsmen and women, and first year students. The
University’s off-campus accommodation policy is’ applicable to all 2nd Year students.
All the students has access to all the facility in the school. In addition the school has some buses running through the campus to different part of Lagos to ease the transportation cost on the students.

This unit handles issues relating to Students’ I. D. Cards, Scholarships, Loans and Bursaries for both undergraduate and

There’s no doubt that students are actively engaged in online communities, but what kind of effects are these sites having and how can parents counteract the bad and bolster the positive?

The Negative

1. Many students rely on the accessibility of information on social media specifically and the web in general to provide answers. That means a reduced focus on learning and retaining information.

2. Students who attempt to multi-task, checking social media sites while studying, show reduced academic performance. Their ability to concentrate on the task at hand is significantly reduced by the distractions that are brought about by YouTube, Facebook or Twitter.

3. The more time students spend on social sites, the less time they spend socializing in person. The Positive

1. Social networking has increased the rate and quality of collaboration for students. They are better able to communicate meeting times or share information quickly, which can increase productivity and help them learn how to work well in groups.

2. Social networking teaches students skills they’ll need to survive in the business world. Being able to create and maintain connections to many people in many industries is an integral part of developing a career or building a business.

3. By spending so much time working with new technologies, students develop more familiarity with computers and other electronic devices. With the increased focus on technology in education and business, this will help students build skills that will aid them throughout their lives.

4. The ease with which a student can customize their profile makes them more aware of basic aspects of design and layout that are not often taught in schools. yes! the truth most be told even if its bitter. there is no way you can win your lecturers or professors heart when your grades are poor. well there may be other ways, but this is the legal way. but you and i know that it is never an easy task to compel first class in Nigeria universities, giving the nature of our learning system with the funny lecturers we have in our various campuses, always ready to frustrate you.

the truth is that everyone want to succeed and be celebrated. but the problem is not everyone is willing to pay the sacrifice.

1. Explore the Benefit of Past Questions.
past questions on every course are often a very good starting point to know your lecturers. having past question on each subject help you to know the lecturer pattern of setting question, thereby helping you to prepare.
NB: most lazy lecturers often repeat past questions from time to time.
remember also to study past questions with your friends to let everyone contribute on the best approach to tackle the question, with this your knowledge of the subject is widen.

2. know the people you associate yourself with

i will tell you this, once your are intelligent or above average many people would want to be your friend, some are there just for your downfall.
remember this proverb, “birds of the same feather flock together. your associate will surely affect you whether you believe it or not.

3. Pray, Pray and Pray

my dear praying play a major role if not the greatest role in having good grade in universities, polytechnics or college of educations. everything is not by one’s effort/labor favor is better than labor. when you pray you are telling GOD that you can’t help yourself but only him can help you.
however I’m not saying that you should forget reading your book and engage in praying only. try to manage your time very well. plan your activities.

4. Learn or Understand Your Body System.

vast majority of students read and understand more in the night when everywhere is quiet/silent. but that does not mean that mid-night is the only time you can also read and understand. learn your boy system. decide and understand when you normally read and understand better.
yours might be in the mid night, late in the evening or early in the morning.
NB: please don’t copy anyone body system. know yours!

5.Work on Your Weak Point

as a complete human, you must have your weak point. no one without weak point, so master your weak point and work on them. call for help from your lecturers. you need others to achieve whatever you want.

The Use of Slang

The term “slang” refers to any word or phrase used in informal settings among certain groups of people (e.g. subcultures, regions, etc.).

Slang found on social media sites and in text messages has become its own subdivision of language. These platforms frequently limit the number of characters used to convey messages, requiring users to develop shorter terms and more creative means by which to express themselves. As a result, various odd acronyms (e.g. LOL, OMG, FTW, IDK, etc.) and abbreviations (e.g. “b4? for before, “2” for to/two/too, “u” for you, etc.) have become infused into everyday communication.

How Does Slang Affect Students in the Classroom?

The rampant use of social media/texting slang by teenagers is largely due to increased accessibility to mobile phones; 91% of teenagers polled in 2015 by the Pew Research Center reported going online at least occasionally from a mobile device. In addition, 73% of teenagers reported owning a mobile phone, and 91% of these teens used it for text messaging. An earlier poll conducted by Pew in 2008 found that 85% of teenagers engage in some form of online personal communication, confirming a small but significant rise in this trend.



Considering how many teenagers are using mobile devices to communicate on a daily basis, it’s not surprising to see anecdotes from teachers and college admissions officers regarding the poor verbal and writing skills they observe on a daily basis. A 2010 study in Communication Research provided evidence that frequent use of texting slang negatively impacted formal writing and daily communication, but positively affected informal writing.



Others argue that the use of internet slang improves language skills by permitting creativity through the development of new words and encouraging good editing skills in order to convey messages within short character limitations. Interestingly, the 2008 Pew study cited above found that while 60% of teens don’t consider texting or communicating on social media as “writing,” 64% admit to using this type of language in their schoolwork.



Does Slang Harm Writing Skills?

The use of slang is so important to some subcultures that it can lead to widening of the achievement gap between blacks and non-blacks within the American educational system. It is hypothesized that students must sometimes make a choice between whether to learn their subculture’s slang to fit in or learn proper English to succeed down the road. The need for social acceptance differs between cultures, thus those with a higher need for it would prefer to learn slang over proper English. Also, those that start out with a disadvantage in reading or writing skills are more likely to be negatively affected by the use of slang, as it further limits their already impaired communication skills.

With these thoughts in mind, it is important for educators to understand and accept that today’s students will always be using mobile devices and social media to communicate with one another. It is equally important to teach students the difference between formal/professional writing and common slang. To this end, educators could leverage the increased use of and access to technology and the internet’s wealth of information and toolboxes to provide proper instruction on formal writing. Slang does have a place in society and learning, but students must be taught what that is and what the converse looks like in order to develop well-rounded communication skills.
