There are strong indications that pro-Ahmed Lawan Senators, under the aegis Senate Unity Forum, were responsible for the petition to the Inspector- General of Police, Solomon Arase on alleged forgery of Senate Rules. According to the letter to the Inspector-General of Police, which was signed by the group’s Secretary, Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi, {APC, Kaduna North}, the group complained that some principal officers in the seventh Senate changed the Senate Standing Orders 2011 as Amended with the inputs and contributions of other Senators. The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP had on Sunday raised alarm that the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Solomon Arase, summoned the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ekweremadu to appear before him yesterday at the Force Headquarters as fallout of the emergence of Senator Bukola Saraki as Senate President and Ekweremandu as his deputy. http://dailypost.ng/2015/07/07/senate-leadership-lawan-group-behind-ekweremandus-invitation-by-igp/ |

Reports in sections of the media today that funds will be drawn from the Excess Crude Account for the relief package approved by President Muhammadu Buhari for states and local governments, are incorrect. Femi Adesina The Sun For the purpose of greater clarity on the matter, the measures approved by President Buhari to deal with the problem of unpaid public sector salaries in many states are as follows: *The sharing of the $2.1 Billion dividend paid to the Federation Account by the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Company (NLNG); * A Central Bank-packaged special intervention fund that will offer financing to the states, ranging from N250 Billion to N300 Billion. This will be a soft loan available to states for the purposes of paying backlog of salaries; and *A debt relief program designed by the Debt Management Office which will help states restructure their commercial loans currently put at over N660 Billion, and extend the life span of such loans while reducing their debt-servicing expenditures. The measures approved by President Buhari definitely do not include drawing down the remaining balance in the Excess Crude Account or the "liquidation" of the account as some media outlets have wrongly reported. No such decision has been taken or approved by President Buhari, and last week's meeting of the National Economic Council clearly concluded that the Excess Crude Account should be left untouched at this time. http://saharareporters.com/2015/07/07/presidential-relief-package-excess-crude-account-still-intact-presidency

The Lagos State National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Ikeja, has slated July 27, 2015 to hear the petition seeking the disqualification of Dr. Femi Gbajabiamila as the elected lawmaker representing Surulere Federal Constituency 1 of the state in the House of Representatives. The petitioner, Mr. Tony Ashikodi, and his party, the Peoples Democratic Party, are challenging the declaration by the Independent National Electoral Commission that Gbajabiamila won the the March 28, 2015 election. INEC had declared Gbajabiamila of the All Progressives Congress, who polled 21, 715 votes, winner ahead of Ashikodi who garnered 14, 550 votes. But Ashikodi and the PDP had approached the tribunal, led by Justice C.U Anwuka, with claims that the election was characterised with irregularities and conducted in breach of INEC’s guidelines. At the Monday’s proceedings, lawyers for Gbajabiamila and INEC, Dele Adeoti and C.N. Olaitan respectively, applied for the withdrawal of certain applications that they had filed before the court. Justice Anwuka consequently struck out the applications. The tribunal thereafter adjourned till July 27 to hear the substantive case http://www.punchng.com/news/tribunal-hears-petition-against-gbajabiamila-july-27/ |
