Food / How To Get Your Picky Eating Kids To Eat Better by yummytummiesng: 7:20am On Aug 12, 2017
I always receive emails and calls from mums who worry about how to get their picky eating kids to eat better. Getting that side look each time you bring a spoon of food close to your child can really be tiring for both mum and baby. It usually leads to food wastage and an underfed baby, both of which are not favorable, nutrition and budget wise.

However, before you conclude that your baby is a picky eater you have to consider the following:

1. TEETHING

A teething child might want to take only liquid. The age when most mums start to introduce solid food to children are usually the age when they start to grow a tooth or two, hence they get irritable and will not be very accepting of solid food. Consider this possibility when you feed your baby.

2. NATURE IN ACTION

The bodies of your little ones need specific nutrients at some point which might make them crave foods with these nutrients and refuse other foods. So, if at some point your child takes only water or watery foods, please allow them, their body might just be asking for it.

3. NEED TO INDULGE

Before you conclude that your baby is not eating well, think of how they have reacted to food through over a period of time which is typically one week. An example is if they have had a lot of solid food through the week and later refuse to eat solid much later then let them indulge.

4. INTRODUCTION OF NEW FOOD

You need to have fed your baby with a particular food for some number of times before you conclude that the baby will not eat this food. It is natural that getting a child to eat a particular food takes time.

In addition to the 4 points above, also note that moderation is key in nutrition.

GOOD TO KNOW

When starting a baby or toddler on new foods, you should always start with single ingredients. This important step will help you see how they react to each food ingredient.

Now if your baby happens to be picky and only likes the sweet foods, like sweet potatoes, bananas and carrots, you definitely cannot restrict their diets to just these foods, so you need to improvise.

HOW TO IMPROVISE ON BABY FOOD

Use one of the ingredients you know the child tolerates as the base ingredient i.e the larger quantity. Then add a lesser amount of other ingredients to the food such that the taste doesn’t overwhelm that of the base ingredient.

Another way of getting picky eaters to eat is to change the food texture. Food textures can be altered in a whole lot of ways such as

Completely pureed to mashed
Thick to very light textured
Diced to shredded
Boiled to grilled, etc

MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE ON CHANGING FOOD TEXTURES FOR MY BABIES

Two of my quadruplets happened to be constipated and were refusing to eat their cereal, they were 8 months old at that time and I had started to thicken their cereal. So I made a carrot puree to help with moving their bowels but they still refused to eat it as all they wanted was fluid. I then decided to put a portion of the thick carrot cereal in a feeding bottle, a scoop of milk and filled the bottle with water.

They drank all of it and were pooping in no time. Now everyone is happy and eating again. cool

HAPPY AND EAGER EATERS

Feeding your babies with a variety of different tasting meals from an early age – usually 6 months is also an effective way of getting your kids to be happy and eager eaters. This can be achieved by making a variety of tasty and nutritious meals at home.

Finally on picky eating, eating time should not be fight time. Babies pick up on little things and begin to believe that it is the norm. Therefore let your kids know and identify with a particular fun activity while eating. It could be a song they like. The song should have registered in their minds beforehand so anytime they hear it they know it’s food time and it’s happy time.

Health / 5 Top Benefits Of Breastfeeding For A Nursing Mother by yummytummiesng: 10:31pm On Aug 10, 2017
Breastfeeding is of immense importance to babies as well as the nursing mothers. Some benefits of breastfeeding a baby are:

- It improve early baby growth
- It guards them against certain diseases and allergies

THE FOLLOWING ARE 5 TOP BENEFITS OF BREASTFEEDING FOR A NURSING MOTHER

1. IT REDUCES THE RISK OF HAVING BREAST CANCER

A more profound reason why breastfeeding is beneficial to nursing mothers is the risk of breast cancer. Thousands of women all over the world have suffered severe cases of breast cancer. However, breastfeeding a baby helps reduces this risk, as some doctors and researchers have come to find out. It’s therefore important to note that as you breastfeed, you gain the benefit of being less prone to breast cancer.

2. IT PROMOTES AFFECTIONATE BONDING BETWEEN MOTHER AND CHILD

The relationship between a baby and the mother is greatly fostered as breastfeeding creates a sort of bond between them. As babies grow by constantly being breastfed, they realize the value they derive from breast milk, while this also makes the mother realize the cry or needs of her baby, especially if she hasn’t fed him/her all day. A small cry from her baby gives her the signal that 99% of what the baby needs is breast milk. This can help to shape early child behavior towards the mother.

3. IT KEEPS BABY HEALTHY AND MOTHER HAPPY

Breastfeeding is sure to make nursing mothers have healthier babies, which in turn will be an illness-free union between them. Babies who are constantly breastfed have stronger bones, stay healthy and rarely have allergies or diseases. This also helps prevent both mother and child from frequent visits to the hospital, as inadequate breastfeeding of the baby can lead to more expenses on the side of the mother, which may in turn cause depression or anxiety.

4. IT HELPS YOU SAVE MONEY

In this sense, breastfeeding reduces the cost of getting baby food or milk as it is readily available anytime any day. Breastfeeding greatly reduces the amount spent in satisfying the milking of a child, especially in situation whereby the mother or family are in some level of financial stress. It’s therefore valuable to know that breast milk is a great source of readily available nutrient for the child. Breast milk is also neat and often comes in the right temperature for both mother and child.

5. IT REDUCES THE RISK OF YOU BECOMING OBESE

Another major way nursing mothers benefit from breastfeeding is the reduction in body size after delivery. It is a known fact that women tend to grow bigger during pregnancy and if not properly taken care of can lead to obesity after childbirth. It’s therefore important to note that breastfeeding your child helps reduce obesity because you release hormones which ultimately increases baby growth while putting you back in pre-pregnancy shape.

Family / Understanding Food Allergies In Babies by yummytummiesng: 10:53am On Aug 07, 2017
Food allergy is an abnormal immune system response to components of some food items.

Infants are more likely to show signs of food allergies in the first year of life because their intestinal and immune systems are immature and going through a lot of development at this stage. Symptoms of food allergies could be mild or severe, these include itching, rashes, eczema, diarrhoea, abdominal pains, stomach cramps, vomiting. More severe symptoms are swellings of the eye, lips, tongue or face and breathlessness/wheezing, fainting etc. These symptoms could occur immediately or a few hours after exposure.

When introducing babies to solid food, one of the major concern of most mums is allergic reactions to one or more of the new food component. Children are at a higher risk of having allergic reactions if there is a family history of food allergies. This is one of the reasons why making your baby food at home is the best option. By so doing, you are sure of all the ingredients going into your baby’s little tummies hence any sign of allergic reaction could be easily traced to the food causing it and proper measures can be taken to prevent further exposure.

NOW LET’S GET PRACTICAL

FIRST SCENARIO

Alex is 7 months of age and his mum will love for him to have some fish in his food. She boils and purees fish and serves it to her little boy. Few minutes after the first spoon a single red rash pops up on his chubby glowing cheek, just as his concerned mum notices this, another one pops up on his arm.

The right thing to do in this scenario is for Alex’s mum to:

- Stop feeding him fish
- Watch him closely, checking for more severe reactions
- If symptoms persists or worsens please contact a doctor

SECOND SCENARIO

Little Teniola is having a meal of banana and peanut puree made by her mum, of course, with a dose of love. This is her first time of trying this two-ingredient meal, so there is a need to watch out for allergies. As Teniola’s mum, you should

- Retain some peanut paste and banana paste separately
- Note that peanuts have a higher chance of causing allergies, so let Teniola try it first
- Take a little amount of peanut paste on the tip of your fingers and put it in little Teni’s mouth
- Wait for a few minutes and watch her closely for any reaction
- In the absence of any allergies, try the same procedure with the bananas.
- Let Teniola have the same meal for 3 days, to be completely sure this food is safe for your baby.

THIRD SCENARIO

Zidane itches every time he eats a particular brand of biscuits.

THE RIGHT THING TO DO

- Check biscuit wrapper for ingredients
- Note possible allergens
- Replace biscuits with one that contains slightly varying ingredients and pay attention.

FURTHER TIPS

To avoid allergies, it’s best to start babies with one ingredient meals so as to easily watch out for allergies and be sure of what food your baby is allergic to, if any allergic reactions occur.

Early exposure to potential allergens (common allergy causing foods) is also a good way to prevent allergic reactions in children.
In cases where it is confirmed that a child is allergic to a particular food, the food in question should be avoided and a plan should be put on ground in case of exposure.

NOTE THE 8 COMMON FOODS THAT MAY CAUSE FOOD ALLERGIES IN BABIES

A child could be allergic to any food, but there are 8 common allergens which account for 90% of all reactions in children, they are:

- Milk
- Eggs
- Peanuts
- Soy
- Wheat
- Fish
- Shell fish such as shrimp
- Tree nuts such as walnuts and cashews nuts

GOOD TO KNOW

Foods with high vitamin C content such as tomatoes and oranges can also cause diaper rash in babies of less than one year of age.

This post examines different areas of food allergies in babies, ranging from how to check for food allergy when introducing a new meal, steps to take when you notice your child is allergic to certain food and the 8 common foods that cause allergic reactions. I hope I have made some clarifications on food allergies. If you have further question on this topic, do not hesitate to ask.
