The thing is, blowing up the bridge was a complex political decision. At that point in time there was already the Midwestern region (later renamed Bendel) and politically they were outside the seceding region Biafra. Thus even though there were Igbos there, trying to carve them out means encroachment, on the other hand, they were also victims of the pogrom too being Igbo. So it was a really complicated situation and decision by the Biafran forces.

Stay and you'll be seen as an encroaching force, leave and be seen by some of your brother's as abandoning them even when some of them volunteered to fight on the Biafran side. It was really a complicated situation.

I've actually taken it as a personal objective to engage Igbos from the SE and SS and to reorient our thinking. I once met a friend now who's from Agbor, his name is Ifeanyi but when I said oh you're Igbo he said he wasn't. After much dialogue he admitted his brother sees himself as Igbo but he himself doesn't. Our engagement changed his orientation to an extent. I recall using this same Nzeogwu reference.

However I met another again from Delta (aniocha part), his name was Chukwurah, he plainly told me he was Igbo and wouldn't even entertain a 'Delta Igbo' tag. Like I said the effect of the war led to denials which has also made the Igbos from the SE to see the newly created bendel and rivers (SS) in a stereotypical way.

The eastern Igbos you speak of are people who are actually ignorant and deficient in history. To start with, what identifies you and traces your origin is your name generally speaking. All this Delta, Anambra, Rivers are recent concoctions.

Anioma, even in name is Igbo meaning Good land. Her inhabitants bear names of Igbo origins so that effectively tells you their roots.

I really blame ignorance and lack of attention to history.
