Students of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun (FUPRE), Delta State, allegedly protesting an increase in fees by the university authorities on Monday barricaded the Warri end of the strategic East-West Road. Although the protest was meant to be as peaceful as possible and without unduly disrupting social and economic activities of residents, the protesters later created barriers on the busy highway connecting Delta with most South-South states of Nigeria through the oil city of Warri. THISDAY learnt that the resort to barricading the Warri/Effurun-Ughelli portion of the East-West Road following breakdown of negotiations between the FUPRE management and representatives of the students. The students claimed that under the new arrangement, the FUPRE authorities have directed old students of the institution to pay N55,000 as against N26,400 charged previously. Similarly, the charge for freshers has been jacked up to N90,000 from the N46,000 fresh students paid in the past. The students further said several other charges have also bee increased by the school authorities, including “Acceptance Fee” and “Hostel Fee”, which the authorities claimed were meant to “develop the institution.” The placard-bearing students said that they wanted to alert members of the public to the seeming commencement of the process to commercialize education at the nation’s first specialized petroleum resources university, stressing that they could not afford the new fees of charges. The students also called on President Goodluck Jonathan to intervene in the interest of the institution, saying the sudden increase announced by FUPRE might be politically motivated and intended to create fresh crisis for the Jonathan administration at this critical election.http://successbase.ml/2015/01/fupre-students-protest-increased-fees-barricade-east-west-road/ |

TheAll Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has described as totally unacceptable, the kite being flown by the Federal Government about the possible arrest and trial of the State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, in connection with some of his recent public statements in his capacity as Director General of the General Muhammadu Buhari Presidential Campaign Organisation (GMBPCO)Meanwhile the Rivers State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP said that public declarations by the outgoing governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi were treasonable. The PDP therefore, calls for the arrest and trial of Rotimi Amaechi to protect the peace and unity of the country. Governor Rotimi Amaechi’s call to form a parallel government if the All Progressives Congress, APC loses the general elections and his call on soldiers to protest, are calls to arms, incitement at best from one who is the chief security officer of a State. He cannot incite Nigerians, the military and security agencies to take up arms against the country at the twilight of his wasteful regime and we sit and watch him undermine the federal government and continue to provide aid and comfort to enemies of Nigeria. Governor Amaechi had at several fora urged to take up arms against the police. Amaechi is a security risk in Nigeria and should be made to face the law. However, General Muhammadu Buhari Presidential Campaign Organisation (GMBPCO), said: “We have every reason to be worried about the safety of our dear Governor in view of the lessons of history, especially with regard to the late Chief MKO Abiola, who was unjustifiably detained, only to die under mysterious circumstances while in government custody. We are, therefore, reluctant to dismiss reports in various media outlets suggestive of a threat to the life of Governor Amaechi in connection with his current assignment as Director General of General Muhammadu Buhari Presidential Campaign Organisation,” Rivers APC said in a statement issued Friday in Port Harcourt by the State Chairman, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya. The party strongly condemned the threat issued to Amaechi on Monday by the Department of State Security (DSS), which described Amaechi’s recent allegation of corruption in the Nigerian military as inciting and unguarded. “This is nothing but an attempt to give a dog a bad name in order to hang it. There is nothing inciting, unguarded or treasonable in Governor Amaechi’s statement. The governor, while expressing his views on the factors militating against the success of the Federal Government’s war against Boko Haram insurgents in the North Eastern part of the country, blamed the challenges on corruption in the military hierarchy and not on inadequate funding as the public is made to believe. It is unfortunate that, rather than accept the challenge of fighting corruption, the Federal Government has chosen to ignore the message and go after the messenger,” Rivers APC said. The party warned that nothing must happen to Amaechi for patriotically exercising his freedom of speech as a citizen of Nigeria in line with the Constitution of the country. “We understand why the sinking PDP-controlled Presidency is resorting to intimidation as it has read the handwriting on the wall in the countdown to the 2015 presidential polls. We, however, wish to make it clear that both Gov Amaechi and his supporters will not be cowed but remain resolute in leading the struggle to uproot PDP from the Aso Presidential Villa as the first step towards salvaging Nigeria from the doldrums occasioned by the inept 16-year maladministration of PDP,” Rivers APC said.http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/01/apc-raises-alarm-threat-amaechis-life/ |

A civil society group, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has dragged the All Progressives Congress (APC) and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to court over “failure to disclose their sources of spending on their respective electoral campaigns and other operations linked to the February 2015 general elections.” The suits filed last week at the Federal High Court Ikoyi followed Freedom of Information requests to PDP National Chairman Alhaji Ahmadu Adamu Mu’azu and APC National Chairman Chief John Odigie-Oyegun dated 18 November 2014. The originating summons against the PDP with suit number FHC/CS/1969/2014 and against the APC with suit number FHC/CS/1968/2014 were brought pursuant to section 4(a) of the Freedom of Information Act, and signed by SERAP Senior Staff Attorney, Olukayode Majekodunmi. The plaintiff is arguing that under the FOI Act, “Nigerians have the right to know about spending by their political parties especially the major parties with a strong possibility to assume government in the future. Citizens should be able to examine financial transactions of parties and be certain that politicians are working for their voters, not their benefactors.” The plaintiff also argues that, both the APC and PDP “Cannot take the position that the FOI Act does not apply to them because to do so will seriously undermine citizens’ trust in their political parties and lack of trust will inevitably destroy confidence in the system and decrease citizens’ interest and participation in democratic processes.” The plaintiff also said that “Without free and fair elections there can be no democracy. However, elections are only one part of the democratic process, and a fair and effective electoral system must be founded in an adequate democratic infrastructure and responsibility of political leaders.” The plaintiff wants the court to determine “Whether by virtue of the provision of section 4(a) of the Freedom of Information Act 2011, the Defendants are under an obligation to provide the Plaintiff with the information requested for.” The plaintiff is seeking: A DECLARATION that by virtue of the provisions of Section 4 (a) of the Freedom of Information Act 2011, the Defendants are under a binding legal obligation to provide the Plaintiff with up to date information relating to the following: 1. Information about the spending and sources of income derived from federal, state and other institutions, agencies or persons for the campaigns and other operations of the Defendants related to the February 2015 elections. 2. The total amounts that have been spent and the anticipated spending and the sources of any such spending related to the February 2015 general elections. 3. Total contributions received by the Defendants for or on behalf of their Presidential candidate and candidates for the governorship elections and the sources of any such contributions. Earlier in its FOI requests, the plaintiff had expressed “serious concerns about the risks of corruption during electoral campaigns for the February 2015 general elections, especially the role of money in politics and the persistent failure generally to comply with national and international law on political party finance.” According to the plaintiff, “Releasing the information will help to address the perception among the citizens that the major political parties in the countries are less transparent and accountable. The lack of transparency and accountability in political finance is seriously undermining the legitimacy and credibility of the democratic and electoral processes, and invariably contributing to denying the citizens the right to effective participation in their own government.” The plaintiff further argued that, “Transparency, accountability, integrity and independence of political parties is also important to achieve greater transparency in public life, to curb the influence of money in politics, to promote a level playing field, and to remove the risks to the independence of political actors and would-be public office holders and the risks of conflicts of interest, including undue influence and corruption in the funding of political parties.” According to the plaintiff, “By virtue of Section 1 (1) of the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act 2011, SERAP is entitled as of right to request for or gain access to information being requested. Under the FOI Act, your party is under a binding legal obligation to provide the applicant with the information requested for, except as otherwise provided by the Act, within 7 days after the application is received.”http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/12/serap-drags-pdp-apc-court-failure-disclose-campaign-funding/ |
More prominent Nigerian coaches are beginning to voice out their frustrations over the sit-tight attitude being employed by the out-of-contract Super Eagles head coach, Stephen Keshi who is bent on continuing as coach of the national team. A former coach of the national team, Chief Adegboye Onigbinde, highly respected for his candid opinion on football matters, has revealed how he advised Keshi against assenting to President Jonathan’s request to come back and manage the Super Eagles. Keshi’s contract with the Nigeria Football Federation elapsed after the 2014 World Cup. The coach was recalled by the Minister of Sports and Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Tammy Danagogo to oversee the first phase of Nigeria’s 2015 Afcon qualifiers against Congo, Sudan and South Africa. Keshi recorded a home loss against Congo, an away draw against South Africa and a loss to Sudan. It was Sudan’s first victory over Nigeria in over three decades. Keshi Although he won the return fixture 3-1 in Abuja, the newly constituted NFF board fired him, hours after that match in Abuja. But the Presidency intervened and Keshi was taken back as Eagles coach. His attempt to qualify Nigeria for the 2015 Afcon, where the Eagles would have defended the title they won in 2013 ended in a disaster as they failed to beat South Africa in Uyo. This has sparked off calls for Keshi’s sack. The technical director of the NFF, Amodu Shaibu, once Keshi’s boss has voiced his disapproval of Keshi’s continuous stay, branding him, “a failure.” On Onigbinde’s part, Onigbinde said, “on the very day the Presidency asked him to return to his job I personally sent him a text message to politely thank Mr President for the offer and bow out honourably and quietly, too. “Keshi respectfully replied the text message thanking me and that was it as he went ahead with the two remaining 2015 AFCON qualifying matches against Congo and South Africa, I’m sure the rest is history.” Chief Onigbinde said further, “I volunteered the advice to Keshi because I understand that he won’t work with the Presidency but a different set of people as well as an entirely different environment. “Now that others have picked up the calls I have the privilege to have said over two months ago I won’t like to engage in an exercise that will appear repetitious so that I won’t be accused of having interest in the whole matter. “I’m not used to pressurising people to act in certain way, I’ve passed my view directly to him, I don’t need to pressurise him further on same thing.” Another prominent Nigerian coach, Kashimawo Laloko has also expressed surprise at Keshi’s reluctance to leave the national team. Said he, “Keshi has shown he doesn’t have the tactical ability to lead the Super Eagles to success in the future. The manner in which he failed with the team is woeful; he should go.” Continuing, Laloko said, “This should not be seen as a witch-hunt. Every coach that has failed with any team has always been asked to leave. Why should Keshi’s case be different? We need to have another coach so the team can move on. Amodu has said it well, so has Chukwu. |

Some are of the opinion that Nollywood actress, Kate Henshaw is the number one actress with most endorsement. That, in some sense means she is rich, at least rich enough to have her meal wherever and whenever she wants it. But the aspiring legislator for the Federal House of Representatives, Calabar Municipal/Odukpani Federal Constituency under the PDP isn’t ready to share any money. “There’s no money. I can’t match the people who have been in the system for 20 to 30 years. I’m going with God and my heart. I’m not sharing money. If you continue sharing money, it will never stop. If you want a change, a true change, then vote for me and you’ll see the change. But if you want money, hey, go for money and stay where you are and don’t ever complain” she says in an interview. In the same interview with Sahara TV, the actress cited lengthy stays in politics as reason for much of the problems in Nigeria, on top of corruption on the part of government officials. “I don’t hope to be there forever. I just want to do, make noise, leave when the ovation is loudest. That’s the best way. I don’t want to be there for 10 years, 12 years, 16 years, that’s the best way. I want to do other things. 4- 8 years. That’s the limit…you can hold me to my word” she declares. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/11/want-change-money-vote-kate-henshaw/

After 14 years of being pregnant, Mercy James delivered a baby girl on Saturday June 7, 2014..She named her miracle..Mercy, a single parent, said of her ordeal during the 14 years she was pregnant but could not give birth: “When I first took in, I knew that I was pregnant with signs and test that confirmed that I was. Four months later, I went to hospital for another test, the result showed that I wasn’t pregnant, but had fibroid. Subsequently, I began to experience bleeding, at least once a day. Sometimes, my tummy would protrude in the semblance of pregnancy. I went to different hospitals, and I kept on receiving the same result that nothing was wrong with me. But deep down inside , I knew that all was not well with me. So I was taken aback when a midwife told me I was pregnant. But considering the test which showed I had fibroid, I was angry with the midwife for giving me what I felt was a false prophecy of hope. Thereafter, I started going from one church to another and from one native doctor to the other. The results that I got fromthem allremained the same. I became more feeble and confused that I prayed for death to come. “I went again to the midwife two years after and complained to her about the pains that I was going through, she toldme againthat it was not fibroid but pregnancy; she advised me to be more prayerful so thatGod willdeliver me from the hands of the devil. I kept on praying andat the same timeasking myself that if truly I’m pregnant, why is it that the baby was notkicking?I bought many concoctions that they said could cure fibroid and drank them. I even drank 12 bottles of a local cleanser but to no avail. This went on for years. Then God took pity on me and decided to wipe mytears.Onthe day I gave birth to my baby girl, I initially thought that worms were trying to come out of my body not knowing that it was a baby. This was what I told the midwife when we came to her. But after examining me she told me to push. I ignored her. I became unconscious for about 15 minutes and when I regained consciousness, I heard the cry of a baby. I was surprised and confused seeing my baby. I couldn’t believe my eyes. Hmm,I thank God for my life and that of my baby Miracle. I named her Miracle because she is truly a miraculous child”. The midwife at the CelestialChurch ofChrist, Kadoso Parish, Ajegunle where Mercy gave birth confirmed the development, especially the role sheplayed.Shetold Vanguard The woman who simply gave her name as Mrs Ajetima informed thus: “She was pregnant for 14 years and was unable to give birth during this period. Then on Saturday around 6:30am I saw two persons carrying her to this place. When she came inside, I laid her down and asked one of my daughters to examine her, after the examination, I found out that it was a baby that was about coming out and not worms. I asked her to push and she refused. My daughter gave her a hard slap on her laps since she refused to push. Behold a baby with placenta came out! I started shouting, calling on people to come and see for themselves that Mercy was truly pregnant, because if not, people will start to say that that Celestial woman has given Mercy a baby. Within a twinkle of an eye, the whole place was filled with people. God is wonderful”. Also affirming the happy development, Mercy’s closest friend, Odunayo Odeyemi had this to say: “I have known mercy for over nine years now. I met her with the pregnancy . In fact, she did not know that she was pregnant. I followed her to many places but her problems kept on increasing. Merely looking at Mercy then before she gave birth, you will notice that she wasn’t okay. I kept advising her to have faith in God because I had experienced the same thing. I was pregnant for three years and three months and God delivered me. “Mercy came to me on that fateful day around 4am begging me to give her a pain reliever, that she was having pains all over her body. I dressed up and took her to a man that sells drugs. After taking the drug, on our way home, she started having serious pains. I called her brother and we both took her to the midwife. Hours later, she gave birth to a bouncing baby girl. We all were surprised because we never expected such a miracle to happen. She had a complete baby.” On the father of Baby Miracle, Mercy informed that they got separated on account of the ordeal that attended her pregnancy. “Friday is the name of my baby’s father. Actually, we are not married. He justproposedto me and I became pregnant for him. He knew about the pregnancy. He always gave me money for tests and scans but he got tired and left me after waiting for me for over a year without seeing any sign of a baby. I have no option than to go my own way,” http://www.informationng.com/2014/06/miracle-woman-gives-birth-after-14-years-pregnancy-in-lagos-photo.html |
London – President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday expressed Federal Government’s commitment to linking all the state capital cities to the rail service in order to boost the country’s economy through rail transportation. Jonathan who was in London at the 17th Honorary International Investment Council (HIIC) said with such a nationwide rail coverage, roads and highways would be better maintained. “If we do not link state capital cities by rail, our roads will not last,’’ he said at the occasion, whose theme is “Rail Transportation’’. While speaking on the upgrading and expansion of the country’s public infrastructure, the President said “infrastructure plays a critical role in the economy. “We cannot mould the economy of the country without good infrastructure. President Goodluck Jonathan Being Welcomed By Nigerians During His Arrival For The Honourary International Investor Council (Hiic) Meeting On Thursday Night “Quite a number of companies have had to create roads to their sites, and this is not supposed to be so. “But we are committed to addressing this. We have been working hard and we have improved significantly with our road network. “Within the next three years, we will be able to resurface all roads in the federal road network across the country.’’ Jonathan said his administration intended to do more by initiating some new road projects. “These are roads that are very critical to our economy, to link Port Harcourt City and Bonny, the major gas exporting terminal of our country,’’ he said. The President also told the HIIC members of his government’s commitment to securing the country’s airspace, and improving the quality of airport terminal buildings. On the issue of security, Jonathan assured the Council members of “putting an end to the holding of communities by Boko Haram insurgents. “We are improving in the area of security. For about a week now, there has been no new story of Boko Haram members holding territories. “Instead, we are reducing them by the day. Before now, many Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Borno were taken by Boko Haram, but now this has reduced. “We are working to put an end to the holding of territories by Boko Haram.’’ In the same vein, Baroness Lynda Chalker, the HIIC Co-ordinator, said the Council had succeeded significantly in moving the country’s economy since it was established. She said the Council had focused on the economy’ various sectors since inception. “But this 17th Council meeting will focus on rail transportation, given its critical role to the economy.’’ The Council Co-ordinator however expressed concern that in spite of the progress achieved so far “positive news in Nigeria is overshadowed by what is happening now. “We must work together to project positive news and achievements. It is not in anybody’s interest to run Nigeria down,’’ she said. Chalker who lauded the country’s response in tackling the Ebola virus disease paid tribute to the late Dr Stella Adadevoh. “By her action stopped what would have been a terrible destruction for Nigeria. But, unfortunately, she died,’’ she said. The Europe Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that deliberations at the HIIC meeting will also focus on opportunities and reforms in the power and construction sectors. Nigeria’s Ministers of Transportation, Power, Works and Aviation are billed to make presentations on their sectors at the meeting. The rest are those of Finance, National Planning and Trade and Investment, as well as Defence. NAN reports that HIIC is an organisation of prominent investors from around the world who advise governments on economic development. The council’s partnership with Nigeria include reducing corruption, attracting foreign direct investment, and promoting a private sector-driven economy.(NAN) http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/11/fg-link-state-capitals-rail-servicesays-jonathan/ |

By Michael Eboh, with Agency Report Ghana, yesterday, accused Nigeria of breaching the agreement between both countries to supply gas to Ghana, a situation that has worsened the country’s power supply. Mr. Edward Bawa, Communications Consultant at Ghana’s Energy Ministry told a Ghanaian news medium that since the inception of the West African Gas Pipeline Project, Nigeria, which is responsible for supplying Ghana, Togo and Benin with natural gas, has proven to be unreliable. “Since gas started flowing through the West African Gas Pipeline, Nigeria has demonstrated that they can’t be relied upon to give us gas,” he maintained. According to him, Nigeria was supposed to send 123 million cubic feet of gas to Ghana but was only able to supply around 49 cubic feet, saying the quantity is “woefully inadequate to enable us to power our generating plants.” Bawa called for an increase in the sanctions to be meted out to Nigeria for breaching the contractual agreement, noting that only this will serve to deter Nigeria from continually breaching the terms of the contract. He said, “The penalty, for the entire contractual period, if Nigeria fails to meet the supply requirement is $20 million dollars. That is peanut to them so they do not have incentive to supply Ghana the required quantities of gas, especially when they have other thermal plants that are asking for gas. Simply they are just not respecting the contract.” To this end, Ghana’s load shedding exercise took a worsening turn as the Ghana Grid Company, (GRIDCO) says it will have to reduce power supply to consumers further if Nigeria’s gas supply to the country continues to dwindle. However, Bawa disclosed that the country is currently looking for alternatives to gas supply from Nigeria, as the Volta River Authority (VRA) is talking with other suppliers who will over the period see how they can give gas to Ghana, as the country awaits its own gas. He urged electricity consumers in the country to be patient with the power firms, saying that it will take a while to solve the electricity problem. To address the challenges facing the country, the Volta River Authority (VRA), has projected that about $1.5 billion is needed to improve the country’s power generation and put an end to the power crisis the country is facing. Mr Samuel Fletcher, Head of Corporate Communications, VRA, told the news medium that while there are currently investments in the sector, those investments should have started several years ago. “Today various stakeholders, various partners including governments are helping us invest in a number of projects for the future, which will come to fruition in about two years’ time,” he said. Fletcher lamented that investments in the power sector should have been done more 20 years ago. Continuing, he said, “Kwame Nkrumah had a vision that is so wonderful. We needed only 10 per cent of Akosombo’s capacity at that time as a country. We needed 60 megawatts; he built 600 megawatts.” He explained that one megawatt of power generated costs about one million dollars, adding that with a deficit of about 500 megawatts, the country needs about $500 million to fix it. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/11/ghana-indicts-nigeria-breach-gas-supply-contract/t |
By Onozure Dania Lagos—A former Divisional Police Officer, DPO, Segun Fabunmi, attached to Pen Cinema Division of Lagos State Police Command, Wednesday, told a Lagos High Court that he could not explain how the ammunition allocated to him left his rifle. Fabunmi, who had been dismissed, is standing trial for allegedly killing one Ademola Daramola and injuring others during the mass protest on fuel subsidy, organized by Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and Trade Union Congress, TUC, of Nigeria, in January 9, 2012. The alleged offence was committed at Yaya-Abatan, Agege, during the protest. At the resumed hearing of the trial, Fabunmi said the AK-47 rifle was opened, while on his way to the scene of protest, adding that after Daramola died, he could no longer remember how many rounds of ammunition were left in the rifle until he was about being detained. Fabunmi, who was being cross-examined by Lagos State Director of Public Prosecution, DPP, Mrs. Olabisi Ogungbesan, told Justice Olabisi Akinlade that he neither chased anybody, shot nor injured people. He said: “I did not run after the late Ademola Daramola, may his soul rest in peace. I do not know him. Why would I chase him? It is ridiculous. “I never ran to anywhere neither did I fire any shot at anybody.” The defendant also told Justice Olabisi Akinlade that on January 9, 2012, he received a distress call that hoodlums at Yaya Abatan Junction, Ogba Agege area, were breaking people’s windscreens and holding innocent people hostage. He said when he got there, there was break down of law and order and that immediately the hoodlums saw him and the other seven police officers, they started throwing bottles, sticks, cutlasses, stones and Molotov Curtails. When asked if he knew that some ammunition got out of his gun, Fabunmi said: ”Yes. I knew that some ammunition got out of my gun when the hoodlums were trying to dispossess me of my rifle, after I sustained injury. “It took the grace of God for them not to have collected the rifle from me. The other police officers all ran away.” He said he had only been DPO of Pen Cinema Police Division for two months and that he went to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital for treatment, but that he could not remember the name of the doctor that treated him. However, Justice Akinlade adjourned the matter to February 18, 2015, for the adoption of written addresses |
