Super Eagles defender Benjamin Tanimu has completed a move to Moroccan side Maghreb de Fes for an undisclosed fee.

The 22-year-old defender joined Crawley Town last summer but struggled to establish himself as a regular, managing only one start in the English League One last season.

Tanimu joins African club

The former Bendel Insurance defender announced via social media that he left Crawley Town for Maghreb Fes, a club in the top division of Moroccan football.

The defender, who has recorded three appearances for the Super Eagles, released a statement on social media announcing the move:

Who Was Peter Rufai?

Peter Rufai, fondly called “Dodo Mayana”, was a professional goalkeeper and one of Nigeria’s greatest football exports.

Born on August 24, 1963, in Lagos State, Rufai was known for his agility, calm presence in goal, and leadership skills. He earned over 60 caps for the Super Eagles and became the first Nigerian goalkeeper to score a goal and to play in the UEFA Champions League.

He was also the first-choice goalkeeper for Nigeria during some of the country’s most important footballing moments, including their debut World Cup appearance in 1994 and their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) win in the same year.

Nigeria's Super Falcons is set to receive N1.5 billion if they win the 2024 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced a 100% increase in the prize money for the tournament winner.

Should the Super Falcons lift the trophy, they stand to receive USD 1,000,000 (approximately N1.5 billion based on current exchange rates).

What CAF said

CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe emphasised the importance of the financial uplift.

He said, “CAF is continuing with its commitment to the development and growth of Women’s Football in Africa. The 100% increase in the Prize Money of the Winner of the TotalEnergies CAF WAFCON Morocco 2024 and the 45% total increase in the Prize Money of this Competition should contribute to the increase of the salaries of Women Football players, coaches and employees."

Dr. Motsepe also highlighted the rising standards of the women's game on the continent.

He added, "The quality and standard of Women’s Football in Africa is consistently improving and is world-class. We are excited about the substantial increase in the number of fans, broadcasting viewers and sponsors in the TotalEnergies CAF WAFCON Morocco 2024. A promising Nigerian athlete has been handed a two-year ban by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) over whereabouts failures.

The 400m sensation Imaobong Uko, a student athlete at Baylor University, received the sanction for committing three whereabouts failures within 12 months - a violation of anti-doping regulations.

Uko was provisionally suspended on July 7, 2024, and her ineligibility will extend till July 23, 2026.

The youngster rose to prominence at just 14 years old by winning the 400m title at Nigeria’s National Sports Festival in 2018. She also cemented her status as a rising star by clinching gold in the 400m at the 2021 World U20 Championships.

At the senior level, Uko represented Nigeria in the mixed 4x400m relay at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Her third whereabouts failure occurred just before the 2024 Nigerian Championships, where she placed third in the 400m. Since then, she has not competed and was notably absent from the 2025 NCAA indoor and outdoor seasons, despite remaining on Baylor University’s roster.

The AIU did not disclose the specific circumstances surrounding Uko’s missed tests, but the case underscores the importance of compliance with anti-doping protocols, especially for young athletes navigating elite competition.

Zeki Uzundurukan, a Turkish football analyst, said that Italian sports media are spinning false transfer stories claiming that Victor Osimhen will join Al Hilal.

He has already rejected Al Hilal

The 26-year-old has two main suitors at this stage of the transfer window: Galatasaray and Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal.

However, as Pulse Sports reported, he has already rejected an offer worth around €40 million a year from the Riyadh-based club. And by some accounts, they returned with an improved bid, which he turned down again, leaving his options open to European admirers.

Galatasaray, on the other hand, have received no such disappointing news from the Nigerian; however, he has not given a positive response either and is still stalling.

What Uzundurukan said

Zeki stated that Italian sources are misleading their audience by claiming Osimhen was amenable to an Al Hilal transfer, when in fact the opposite is true. Also, he expressed confidence in Galatasaray's ability to land the Nigerian.

"Osimhen and Okan Buruk have a phone conversation and say, 'We are waiting for you'. It was a very good conversation. Osimhen is already warm to Galatasaray,” Uzundurukan said, per GsGazette.

“They are also sorting out the financial issues with Napoli. All 3 sponsors will cover a large portion of the transfer fee. There will be striking developments in favour of Galatasaray this week. Al-Hilal has already made the necessary moves, and they will now withdraw.

“The Italian press is making up stories and saying he will go to the Arabs. It is a complete lie. If Osimhen had gone, he would have gone long ago, and Al-Hilal would have raised his offer already. If there had been no direct participation in the Champions League, he might not have stayed at Galatasaray.

“I think he will stay. I think Osimhen will join the Galatasaray camp and start the new season without missing too much training. If Osimhen has problems, they will meet with Victor Boniface from Bayer Leverkusen."
