By 2018, the African e-commerce market is projected to soar to US$ 50 billion from just US$ 8 billion in 2013 according to reports. To some these figures show gradually the growth of ecommerce in Africa. However there are those who feel Africa should be benefitting more. The huge some of ecommerce transactions and enterprises springing up in the past years have been focusing on serving local markets in Africa. Perhaps it’s time to start thinking markets outside Africa. Put side by side Africa’s ecommerce projection for 2018 with estimation of over US$15 trillion for annual business-to-business transactions and well over US$1.2 trillion for annual business-to-consumer trade in the world according to UNCTAD, and you see the huge opportunities Africa is yet to tap into. While a large number of developed countries keep benefitting from international trade, Africa is still lagging; According to eMarketeer (July 2014) the total international B2C trade from the entire Africa and Middle East region represented only about 2.2% of the world’s total in 2013. How can Africa start picking up on international trade? The invent of internet has made the world a global unit. With just a few clicks from wherever you are, one can access any country’s market. Gone are the days you have to travel thousands of miles to do business transactions. It has evolved the way we do business in the new age we’re in. E-commerce perhaps is one of the very useful application areas of the internet. An ecommerce platform is specifically built for Business transactions to be carried out largely through the internet, they form a gateway through which buyers and sellers can connect and do business. A few example of such platforms in the world are Amazon, Ebay, and Alibaba. Alibaba as a typical example, paved way for small manufacturers in China into global market. In 2013, they had 231 million active users, each of whom made an average 49 purchases a year, for more than 11 billion orders annually. Ecommerce brings the unique opportunity to open access to international markets for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Africa; for example a small farmer somewhere in Kano, Nigeria is not limited to only buyers in Nigeria alone; he can have buyers anywhere in the world. It’s been 2013 ecommerce came to Africa, and very few initiatives are towards promoting Africa to the global market. On their own, efforts by Africa’s enterprises to access markets outside their shores have been the usual brick ’n’ mortar way. Over the years its been almost impossible for African enterprises to trade through platforms like Alibaba, amazon and Ebay as they have access restrictions. As ecommerce continues to record some success in Africa, the application of ecommerce into cross-border trade is still very much untouched. Of course the difficulties are there, but efforts should start showing- something like what this particular startup is doing in Africa-Connecting Africa trade, promoting locally made products in Africa and connecting Africa businesses to global markets. A step like this can be very scary considering several factors impeding Africa ecommerce from growing but Cokodeal has dug in; the past four years, they’ve gained experience, growing network and making their business work. Helping local businesses in Africa connect with buyers within Africa, Europe, Asia, and USA through its online marketplace, broker service and digital marketing expertise. The profits are huge and the early players stand the chance to reap huge, Africa has enough to offer a large market and these are the kind of developments we want to be seeing in ecommerce in Africa. Platforms like cokodeal might not be there yet, but we get the idea; and with bit of support, just like China, Africa can be the next international trade hub through them. |

Cokodeal marketplace platform provides SMEs advertising services and advisory. Launched in 2014, Cokodeal is a digital advertising platform for SMEs, allowing businesses to drive sales via its digital marketplace. It offers small businesses marketing and increased visibility, and also offers business advisory services to guide an international commodity trader on fees, documentation and best practices. Dola, who along with his co-founders has self-funded Cokodeal thus far, says the startup has no need for external funding and is determined to become a “unicorn” employing thousands of people by disrupting African trade. “The SME digital advertisement and intra-Africa commodity trade to global market is a US$600 billion market. Cokodeal aims to be the company with the largest market share controlling commodity trade in Africa to global market,” he said. The startup has made steady progress thus far, with over 1,000 merchants listed and over 4,000 users. Dola says Africa has millions of manufacturers and traders struggling to be found, as most have limited marketing budgets and little understanding of how to use digital media. “Many foreign private ventures that want to invest in made in Africa or trade with African businesses do not have a trusted contact partner to deal with,” he said. “Many African businesses do not have good trade knowledge to export their goods and receive funds from abroad.” Cokodeal, which has already expanded to Tanzania, has established itself as the largest marketplace for “Made in Nigeria” goods. Dola says the size of the opportunity is “huge”. “The amount of informal trade unrecorded by statistics is very large,” he said. “Uptake has been positive. We receive lots of enquiries from different countries within Africa and internationally for product sourcing information. We have also brokered many deals for businesses and created an easy medium for different unknown brands.” Having already expanded outside of Nigeria, Cokodeal will be licensing to more African countries, such as Kenya, Ghana, South Africa, Rwanda and Angola, in early 2018, with an improved operating trade network. Dola is optimistic it will see a positive reaction in these new markets as well. “Cokodeal is a fully designed multi-platform that allows localisation of the platform in each African country, the upload of products in local currencies, and is accessible in another country’s local currency,” he said. cokodeal.com, an e-commerce platform for made-in-Nigeria products that connects local manufacturers, producers and suppliers to global markets, has called for a conscious drive to strengthen the SMEs in Nigeria as a way to boost its economic growth, stating that SMEs are at the core of the development of any country. Dola said he believes Ecommerce provides a huge opportunity for Nigerian SMEs to explore and expand into bigger and larger territories. “We have created an ecommerce marketplace platform where Entrepreneurs in Nigeria can be indigenous and produce their own, because we have what is in demand in other places in the world,” he said. According to him, reports have it that Africa makes up less than two percent of the global E-commerce space, and as a country with 89 percent Internet penetration, Nigeria has the capacity to make a 19 per cent increase. “Throughout 2016, Nigeria exported goods worth N8.53 trillion as against goods worth N8.82 trillion the country imported, resulting to a 6.47 percent trade deficit. “Also, crude oil export value of N6.99 trillion dominated exports from Nigeria throughout 2016 as against N1.53 trillion recorded for non-crude oil export and N344.37 billion for non-oil exports according to reports from NBS,” he said. Nigeria is a huge export partner with countries like Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, India, China, especially with non-oil products. For example, in 2015, Nigeria sesame seeds export to the Netherlands was reported to be about 6000 tonnes and worth € 8.7million. Dola believes that if most of the trade transactions follow the brick and mortar format- by leveraging e-commerce- these figures could have been more, processes could have been automated, thereby fast-tracking sourcing and business transactions. “These days one can complete such transactions in the matter of days from the researching for prospective buyers and transacting with these buyers; through the help of internet and ecommerce. We see that happen often on Cokodeal,” he said. According to him, “We are engaging with authorities and other stakeholders to leverage Cokodeal’s platform and commodities trade experience to help SMEs prepare for maximising the opportunities that E-commerce represent for Nigeria and Africa as a whole.” According to Raymond Agholor, director of communication, Cokodeal.com, who was also present, said the company identifies with local producers, farmers, suppliers of Africa products, thereby promoting intra-Africa trade and connecting African businesses to global markets; though there’s still a lot to be done. “SMEs in Nigeria have endured and thrived even in unfavorable conditions over the years; their resilience to stay on and keep surviving especially during the crumble of oil price and foreign exchange begging to be rescued has received praise from the international business world,” he said. There is hardly another business requiring a negligible startup cost that can put you into a six figure bracket so quickly than online-based export business. Analyze the market: Keep yourself informed. Read everything that you can find about export business, look at trade publications, international newspapers, news magazines and financial reports. The export business is actually smaller than you might think. There are only a few of these businesses that’s why there is plenty room for more. The width and depth of cooperation of the two countries embrace a vast range of prospects. while manufacturing was an important aspect of China‘s economy, the oil industry was the major driver of the Nigerian economy. ”Until now China had already invested $7.24bn and created more than 30,000 jobs for Nigeria. If this project becomes successful, Nigeria‘s capability to manufacture will be largely enhanced, which definitely will contribute to Nigeria‘s export. Goldman Sachs Group prediction is realistic: Nigeria has diligent and talented people, abundant natural resources and huge potential for development. Goldman Sachs Group predicted Nigeria would be the 18th largest economy in the world by 2025 and 11th in 2050. To realize this, government has projected 40 percent of all foreign earnings to come from non-oil export trade, while oil and other sub-sectors will share 60 percent between them. Currently, Chinese firms are playing leading roles in the provision of critical social infrastructure like roads and bridges in the country. In the area of energy, the Chinese are the builders of the largest power generating plant in the country at Papalanto in Ogun State, while also handling the construction of a cement plant for the Dangote Group. Export Business Can Still Accommodate More Nigerians: The non-oil export business is still at its very primitive stage in Nigeria with a very high potential for growth. The market is, thus, inexhaustible (especially for agricultural commodities and other consumables). Therefore, there is space for everyone that will like to earn foreign exchange via the export business. Although Kashogi came from a middle class family, he went to school with the children of oil-rich sheiks. He revealed that at a very young age he had discovered how to earn finders fees by simply listening to his friends at school. He would overhear his school friends talking about what one father was seeking and whose father had that item. He would then ask for, and be paid, a "commission" (finder's fee) for introducing the fathers to one another. As he grew older, the people who had paid him as a child remembered him and asked him to find more and bigger things for them now - such as Aircraft, Oil Field Equipment, Ships, etc. - paying him ever bigger profits. PRODUCT SOURCING AGENT as featured on cokodeal.com blog An Ultimate strategy to get into the Nigerian export value supply chain As a product sourcing agent you can conveniently plug into the export value chain, what a good way to build up a successful exportation business from nothing and have fun doing it? Not only does it require little financial investment to start, but it offers the prestige of working with Nigerian exporters offline and on cokodeal.com spread all over the Country. What you need to start: You don't need previous experience in the field, but you should have a good head for organizing and constant attention to little details. Making contacts with exporters: As product sourcing agents, you will need to make contact with the Nigeria exporters, you can register with some trade portals where you will have access to their chosen commodities, specifications and contacts details, you can send a mail to them and inform them that you can met their requirement, you will need to submit a product sample, and you can then go ahead to discuss the price and the terms of payment You clients: As a product sourcing agent you will deal with farmers, you will need to go their farms and deal with them directly and you might need to transport the commodity to the city, you can also deal with the local buying agents and the commodity merchant, although, they are very expensive but they make product sourcing very easy. The value chain: The farmers – Local buying agent (LBA) – Commodity Merchant – Commodity Sales Agent - Exporters Farmers: Cultivate and harvest the commodities: Nigeria, one of Africa's most populous countries, has a highly diversified agro-ecological condition, which makes the production of a wide range of agricultural products possible. Agriculture is one of the most potentially viable sectors of the Nigerian economy, particularly in terms of its employment generation potentials as well as its contribution to Nation's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and export revenue earnings The Agricultural sector is being totally transformed by the federal government to enable the country move from traditional farming to modern agriculture as a business both for small and large-scale farmers. The objective is to ensure food security whilst also promoting exports in agriculture value chains where we have a comparative advantage. A lot of Nigerian exporters are investing in large scale plantation of different agricultural product, making over 900% returns on their investment. As a small investors you can get involved in the export value chain by getting a land lease for a year at N5,000 per hectare or buying the land completely and start large scale agricultural plantation Local buying agent (LBA): They Purchase commodities from different farmers and pre –process them for export. They make sure they have enough commodity in stuck before the market day The local buying agents (LBA) is divided into two parts we have the local commodity merchant and city or large commodity merchant..The local commodity merchant operate at the local level, for instance a local buying agents that operates in Jujunku in Taraba state will by from the farm and stock his shop with agricultural commodities before the markets day, The city commodity merchant are in Kano, Lafia, Kaduna, they are big players before you can buy from them you must have a big order, some Asians that come to Nigeria do buy from them because the city commodity merchant can arrange for five to ten containers within few days As a product sourcing agent, you can buy from them if you have big orders, especially when you have the financial muscle to buy in large quantity, dealing with them ultimately saves time of the sourcing agents because you will get your commodities at one point Commodity Merchants: Purchase commodity from different local buying agents and farmers to process and sell to the sales agent and exporters. They are in Lagos and you will need to give them advance payment before they can supply you your chosen commodity. I will advice any new entrants into commodity sourcing to deal with the farmers, or the local buying agents, because commodity merchant are very expensive to deal with. Commodity sales agent: Purchase the commodity from merchants and local buying agents to deliver to exporters’ warehouse. Some of them are in Lagos. Need a point man: As a product sourcing agent often times you will need a point man, when you are sourcing for agro products, a point man will make product souring very easy for you they know the terrain and they now how to deal with the agents, they help in quick and effective coordination of your chosen agricultural commodity. Exporters: They are the receiver of the products, they deal with the international markets In the export value chain an exporter can decide to deal with any of the agents or commodity merchants, he can decides to pay in advance or when the commodity is delivered to the warehouse. A lot of Nigerians are operating a highly lucrative export company and they are making a steady income of between N500,000 and N10,000,000 monthly, regularly, and at their spare time. The profit from the first transaction can be ploughed back and an investor will be able to build up his capital base. The cheapest exportable product is charcoal and the start up capital is N650,000 and the profit on investment is N150,000 per trailer, Nigerians cannot even met the demand coming from the Europeans Countries now. If you have an ability to sell, and an air of diplomacy, the export business might be right for you. All you need is the desire and determination to make it work. Product sourcing for the local manufacturing company Do you know some local manufacturers looking for ways to increase their market for the goods they produce? You can help them source for their raw material, a lot of Nigerian companies are looking for cassava tuners, cassava flour, Shea butter, Cocoa, maize, Groundnut, you can get their LPO, I discovered that some of them pay on delivery being their regular supply can raise your income level. If you are interested in the export business, you can start as a product sourcing agent and increase your skill in the export value chain. The biggest advantage is the money you'll make. Once you get the business underway, the commission for setting up sales is very profitable. And after you establish and maintain a number of exclusive accounts, you'll find the time you spend is highly rewarded with money. |

featured on punch newspaper : http://punchng.com/connect-local-sellers-international-buyers-made-nigeria-products-cocodeal/ The drive to encourage consumption of Made-in-Nigeria products and push local products beyond the borders of the African continent to niche markets across the globe now has a strategic solution in Cokodeal. cokodeal.com is an eCommerce platform where buyers and sellers trade in Made-in-Nigeria products. According to its founder and CEO, Mike Dola, the platform removes some of the challenges that players in the informal sector experience such as market inaccessibility, limited market information, sub-standard product packaging, unnecessarily high charges and obsolete or unguarded regulations to mention a few. He explained that Cokodeal is positioned to give visibility to local manufacturers and SMES and make it easier for MDAs to identify and shortlist potential suppliers quickly. The platform is also built in such a way that it can easily pick the geo-location of prospective buyers and offer competitive prices of products in the denominating currency of their respective locations – so potential buyers of Made-in-Nigeria products who live in South Africa can see the pricing in Rand and compare with existing products found locally in South Africa. “Cokodeal is the pioneer ecommerce for Made-in-Nigeria products & raw material for exports. Cokodeal is the largest promoter for goods locally produced in Nigeria. We generate the highest promotion on Twitter for Made-in-Nigeria goods and constantly share our knowledge base as a technology business platform on how we can drive sales for manufacturers and help them create a digital market structure from the experience we have gathered over the years selling for manufacturers,” said Mike Dola, founder and CEO. Consumers that come on Cokodeal have the luxury of choosing from many merchants selling identical products. This gives customers the opportunity to compare goods across different sellers and get the best deal. “Items on cokodeal are cheaper, as we don’t stock any imported items and don’t carry the additional cost of skyrocketing foreign exchange values. These are products sourced locally across different states in Nigeria. Most retailers prefer to source on Cokodeal because it provides them with enough margins to still make profit,” Dola said. |

In the contemporary Nigeria, the renewed calls for the patronage of locally manufactured products have rightly defined it as the best way to save Nigeria from the clutches of downright recession. Indeed, steps by the government and private institutions signal –with greater optimism– that something better is about to unravel.
