DAMNATIO AD BESTIAS (CONDEMNATION TO BEASTS)

Damnatio ad bestias (Latin for "condemnation to beasts" ) was a form of Roman capital punishment in which the condemned person was killed by wild animals, usually lions or other big cats. This form of execution, which first came to ancient Rome around the 2nd century BC, was part of the wider class of blood sports called Bestiarii.

Prisoner and slaves found guilty of a serious crime were sent to their deaths naked and unable to defend themselves against the beasts. Even if they succeeded in killing one, fresh animals were continually let loose on them, until the victims were all dead. It is reported that it was seldom necessary for two beasts to be required to take down one man.

DUCKING STOOLS

Cucking stools or ducking stools were chairs formerly used for punishment of disorderly women, scolds (people accused of being troublesome and angry and who habitually chastised, argued and quarrelled with their neighbours) and dishonest tradesmen in England, Scotland, and elsewhere.

The victim usually a woman would be strapped in a chair at the end of a pole, and summarily dropped into the nearest stream or lake...repeatedly.

HAVING A METAL PEAR POKED UP YOUR PARTS

Classen and Scarborough point out that "to eat an anguish pear" was a French proverb meaning to be held captive or made miserable. The machine itself is a pear-shaped device that was inserted into a part of the body (usually the vagina or anus) and gradually "opened" by turning the stem. It then poppped into several thin, sharp slivers. It was apparently reserved for witches, prostitutes, homosexuals, and people who didn't show outward signs of agony while being tortured. One poor woman, during the Spanish Inquisition, had the pear "opened" twenty-six turns, and, unsurprisingly, died soon after.

SUFFOCATING IN THE MUD

Suffocation as a technique of execution has been around for a very long time. One ancient Roman woman, Fausta, was executed in an overheated bath, and one of the most famous martyrs of Christianity, Saint Cecelia, allegedly had to be beheaded after a suffocation attempt didn't work. But the Middle Ages legal system specialized in one particular type of suffocation: mud, glorious mud.

Being drowned or suffocated in mud seems to have been (thankfully) rare, but in the Burgundy region of France it was a punishment reserved for women who left their husbands. Sometimes suffocation in mud was less a planned punishment than a nasty offshoot of medieval battles, though: historians report many cases of exhausted, armor-laden men drowning in mud on battlefields.

PLUCKING A STONE OUT OF BOILING WATER/CARRYING HOT IRON

Trials by ordeal were no joke. They weren't the norm — if you stole a bunch of gold and somebody saw you, for example, you'd probably just be hanged, not asked to go through a holy test. But when ordeals were deemed appropriate for whatever crime had been committed, they didn't mess around. Your punishment if you failed? Excommunication from the church, to start with, because God clearly didn't believe in your good name. And that was just the beginning.

There were three types of ordeal: cold water (where sinking to the bottom of a pool indicated innocence, while floating showed guilt), hot water (plucking a stone from a cauldron of boiling water and having the wounds heal within three days was required to prove your innocence), or hot iron (carrying a pound of boiling iron showed your righteousness). If a priest or holy person was accused of a crime, he could ask for a trial by the host, which involved taking the host wafer into his mouth and swallowing it. If he choked, he was guilty.

DEATH BY A THOUSAND CUTS: LINGCHI

Lingchi (translated variously as the slow process, the lingering death, or slow slicing, and also known as death by a thousand cuts), was a form of torture and execution used in China from roughly 900 CE until it was banned in 1905. It was also used in Vietnam. In this form of execution, a knife was used to methodically remove portions of the body over an extended period of time, eventually resulting in death.

Process
The process involved tying the condemned prisoner to a wooden frame, usually in a public place. The flesh was then cut from the body in multiple slices in a process that was not specified in detail in Chinese law, and therefore most likely varied.

HORSE DISMEMBERMENT

Dismemberment was carried out in the Medieval and Early Modern era and could be effected, for example, by tying a person's limbs to chains or other restraints, then attaching the restraints to separate movable entities (e.g. four horses) and moving them in opposite directions.

This punishment was meted to condemn Túpac Amaru II to death.

Here goes the account:

"His feet and hands were tied to four horses who will then be driven at once toward the four corners of the plaza, pulling the arms and legs from his body. The torso will then be taken to the hill overlooking the city... where it will be burned in a bonfire... Tupac Amaru's head will be sent to Tinta to be displayed for three days in the place of public execution and then placed upon a pike at the principal entrance to the city. One of his arms will be sent to Tungasuca, where he was the cacique, and the other arm to the capital province of Carabaya, to be similarly displayed in those locations. His legs will be sent to Livitica and Santa Rosas in the provinces of Chumbivilcas and Lampa, respectively."

DEATH BY BOILING

Death by boiling is a method of execution in which a person is killed by being immersed in a boiling liquid. While not as common as other methods of execution, boiling to death has been practised in many parts of Europe and Asia.Due to the lengthy process, death by boiling is an extremely painful method of execution.

People in the early ages loved playing with their meat, or their convicted. And naturally, boiling the convicted in oil or water till the person died was an in thing. Though it was not as popular as other methods, as no direct show of blood was involved, it still had its own audience in Europe and Asia.

BURNING AT STAKE

People in early ages loved a good fire, and what better ways to light a fire than to burn a person at the stake? This one of the most favourite modes of punishing people accused of treason or witchcraft, as it made a grand spectacle and also warned people against committing such crimes.

SAWED IN HALF

It means the same, that people were often given capital punishment by being sawed in halves. This method of execution was used in different parts of the world like the Roman Empire, Spain, and in parts of Asia. Another similar kind of punishment was disembowelment, where the organs would be taken out of a living person, gradually leading him to death.

CRUSHED BY AN ELEPHANT

Capital punishment by the convict’s head being crushed under an elephant was a very popular method in ancient India, and also in other parts of South East Asia. Elephants were trained to kill their victims immediately or to torture them slowly over a period of time in this public spectacle. Sometimes (believe me, rarely) the elephants were made to just dismember the convict and not completely kill him.

IMPALEMENT

Impalement by pike, pole, spear, hook or stake was not only fairly common, it was also popular during the middle ages. Especially people convicted for treason or ‘crimes against the state’ would be punished like this. And people did invent many devices to execute this method of punishment. Different orifices of the body would be penetrated for different crimes in this gruesome method though all of those eventually led to a very painful death.

BRAZEN BULL

Designed by the ancient greeks, this method was also called the Sicilian bull, as it was invented in Sicily. This was a device made of bronze, in the shape and size of an actual bull. The condemned person would be locked inside and fire would be set beneath the bull, heating the bronze till the person inside got roasted to death. This device also had such systems that converted screams of the condemned into the bellows of a bull.

RAT TORTURE

Torturing or killing people using rats still remains a favourite method among people, but in early times it was more so. There was a thing called rat trap where a rat would be put inside a cage. The bottomless cage would be placed on a convict’s body (torso, generally) and the other side of the cage would be heated. The poor rat, finding the other side blocked by the heat, would slowly eat away the victim’s flesh to make way for itself.

CRUCIFIXION

Nailing (or tying) people to a wooden cross and then leaving them out in the open, both for people to see and to die a slow and agonising death was a very famous practice in the middle ages, as is evident from the story of crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The ‘best’ part of crucifixion was the terror it generated among its witnesses, leaving them mentally too crippled to commit any crime or go against the authorities.
