Over to you Nairalanders:

Edo people in the house, what is this soup called in your local dialect?

Have you ever tasted or cooked cotton seed soup before?

What other traditional Nigerian dishes do you feel are gradually going extinct?

When most people hear cotton, the first thing that comes to mind is fabric, textiles, and clothing. But deep in the heart of Edo State, our ancestors found a completely different purpose for the cotton plant: turning nutrient-dense cotton seeds into a rich, traditional delicacy known as Cotton Seed Soup.

Many visitors travel to Benin expecting the usual favorites like Egusi or Jollof rice, unaware of this hidden culinary gem that has quietly survived across local communities for generations. Unfortunately, it has become a forgotten heritage that fewer than 20% of the younger generation know how to prepare today.

Here is a breakdown of how this unique traditional soup is sourced and prepared:

The Market Hunt: The journey kicks off at Egobaza market, a bustling border town market situated between Edo and Ondo State. Unlike modern supermarkets, this is an open market where local farmers, fishermen, and traders assemble to sell fresh indigenous ingredients.

Processing the Cotton Seeds: The foundation of the soup requires raw cotton seeds, which undergo intense labor scrubbed and washed vigorously with salt before processing to extract the rich seed milk.

The Blend: The extracted cotton seed milk is combined with freshly prepared palm fruit base (banga).

The Assorted Protein & Spices: The pot is loaded with a variety of proteins, including cow skin (kpomo), beef, stockfish, dried bushmeat (snake), smoked catfish, and aromatic native herbs and spices.

It appears plus size women are the in-thing now when it comes to choosing a bride. Over the past months, we have seen many young handsome men opt for big size women contrary to the general opinions that men prefer their women slim and/or coke shape. Here is another's example of such preference for BBW! Congratulations to Gbadebo and Hanny
