President Buhari has initiated moves for the production of weapons in Nigeria. According to a statement signed and released by Senior Special Adviser to the president on media and publicity Garba Shehu today August 7th, President Buhari charged the Federal Ministry of Defence to produce a plan for the establishment of a modest Military Industrial Complex for the local production of weapons to meet some of the requirements of the country's armed forces. President Muhammadu Buhari Friday in Abuja directed the Federal Ministry of Defence to produce a plan for the establishment of a modest Military Industrial Complex for the local production of weapons to meet some of the requirements of the country's armed forces. Speaking at the graduation ceremony of the National Defence College, President Buhari described as unacceptable, Nigeria's current over-dependence on other countries for critical military equipment and logistics. "We must evolve viable mechanisms for near-self- sufficiency in military equipment and logistics production complemented only by very advanced foreign technologies. "The Ministry of Defence is being tasked to draw up clear and measurable outlines for development of a modest Military Industrial Complex for Nigeria. "In this regard, it is to liaise with other strategic MDAs and industries to re-engineer the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) to meet national military hardware and logistics requirements," the President said. President Buhari told the gathering that his administration had, since its assumption of office, reviewed the nature and character of Nigeria's security threats and challenges. "We recognized first and foremost, the external dimensions of these threats and the need for international cooperation and common security mechanisms to tackle them," the President said. President Buhari added that in the light of this realization, his Administration was "convinced that the best approach was to work within the framework of the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) to mobilize a collective regional effort in the fight against terrorism and insurgency. The President urged the graduates and officers and men of the Armed Forces to work harder to win the war against Boko Haram, terrorism and insurgency. "We must apply a comprehensive strategy and coordinate all elements of national power against terrorism and insurgency; we must show result oriented leadership at all levels of military Command; we must set up an optimal organization to manage and sustain operational performance; and we must show confidence and winning mentality," President Buhari told them. The President assured that the Federal Government under his leadership will strive to meet the operational, logistic, training and welfare requirements of the Armed Forces of Nigeria. He also reaffirmed his commitment to ameliorating the hardships of people living in areas most affected by insurgency and terrorism. "We have the will, resolve and conviction to apply a comprehensive strategy and coordinate all elements of national power against terrorism and insurgency," the President reassured Nigerians and the international community. President Buhari said that the National Defence College had fulfilled the vision of its founding fathers, by becoming a strategic human capacity- building institution, making credible contributions to Nigeria and other friendly countries. The President urged graduates of the College's Course 23 to resolve to make "a marked difference in your future deployments and contribute your quota to the evolution and implementation of national security, defence and military strategies." "You should be the source that lights up the environment wherever you find yourselves," he told them. Garba Shehu SSA to the President (Media and Publicity) August 7, 2015 |

President Muhammadu Buhari has directed that a Lake Chad report submitted in 1920 be reviewed to salvage the lake from drying up, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Fatimah Mede, said Tuesday. Lake Chad is largest lake in the Chad Basin, and is located mainly in the far west of Chad which shares a border with north-eastern Nigeria. It is economically important, providing water to over 68 million people living in four countries surrounding it, namely,Chad, Cameroon, Niger, and Nigeria. Ms. Mede told journalists that the president gave the directive following his concern that Lake Chad has receded from 33,000 square kilometres about two decades ago to just 300 square kilometres. The president, Ms. Mede said, complained that the receding lake is adversely affecting the livelihood of those whose economic activities are directly linked to it. “So he has directed that we should go and look at the report that was submitted in 1920 about how to prevent Lake Chad from drying up, so that the communities around, even border communities, including the countries benefitting from activities of fishermen and livelihood based on Lake Chad, are not affected. The president also called for the promotion of Liquefied Petroleum Gas to curb the continuous felling of trees used as firewood for cooking. “He has directed that we should bring up that report immediately and see how we can promote the use of LPG to reduce the rate at which trees are being cut down,” Ms. Mede said. She said over 43 per cent of Nigerians are currently affected by desertification and this has continued to breed conflict between the herdsmen and farmers because of migration and having to move away from the dessert to the South West where they can get grass to feed the animals. “For instance if everybody in Abuja is using LPG gas to cook, the rate at which people cut down wood to sell will be reduced,” she said. On the clean cook stove initiative, the Permanent Secretary said the contractor had taken the government to court seeking an injunction to prevent the government from terminating the contract. The clean stove initiative was launched by Vice President Namadi Sambo, in the Banquet Hall of the State House,Abuja. He had said the stoves will reduce carbon emission in the country and also boost job creation and reduce smoke-related diseases. However, the Federal Ministry of Environment terminated the controversial project, initiated by the former Goodluck Jonathan administration. The ministry had said the German contractor who was given three months to supply 750,000 units of the stove and 18,000 wonder bags under the project had failed on his part to deliver the items. Ms. Mede also noted that N5 billion had been released to the Ministry by the government and N1.3billion had been paid to the contractor, and the balance of N3.7billion had also been kept untouched. “We will go there and argue our case, the government will go. We have briefed the attorney general’s office. We will present our case and the court will decide,” she told journalists at the Presidential Villa on Tuesday. www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/187832-buhari-orders-review-of-1920-report-on-lake-chad.html |

Some dealers at the popular Ladipo Auto Spare Parts Market in Lagos have taken the authorities of the Mushin Local Government Area before a Lagos State High Court in Ikeja over an alleged threat to demolish their shops and eject them from the market. The marketers, who said they were apprehensive that the defendant might soon make good its threat, are seeking an order of interim injunction barring the council from embarking on what they described as unlawful demolition of their shops. The plaintiffs, in an ex parte application filed through their counsel, Mr. Richard Nwankwo, urged the court to direct parties to maintain the status quo pending the determination of their lawsuit. The 10 plaintiffs who sued are Nnamdi Chukwuka, Franco Offai, Vitus Okoyeagu, Felix Okafor, Peter Benson and Richard Olisakwe. Others are Godwin Onyeka, Emeka Ikeh, Romanus Ezimora and Darlington Ugochukwu. In the affidavit filed in support of their application, they alleged that without a prior notice, agents of the Mushin Local Government Area had invaded the market, and with the help of “hoodlums and rented armed policemen” commenced demolition of their shops. They claimed that the respondent, after the invasion, had continued to threaten them with ejection and demolition, despite the intervention of the state Commissioner of Police, who reportedly met with the parties on July 21 and appealed to everyone to be law-abiding. Chukwuka, who deposed to the affidavit, said the demolition and ejection threat by the Executive Secretary of Mushin LGA, Mr. Jide Bello, was coming while the plaintiffs had subsisting rents. The deponent, who accused Bello of hiding under “the guise of redeveloping the market”, said, “The respondent also deployed some equipment in the market and removed roofs. “The hoodlums went on a looting spree, carting away some of our expensive goods, cash and other valuables.” No date has been fixed for the hearing. www.punchng.com/news/ladipo-traders-head-for-court-over-demolition/ |

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Mr Osita Okechukwu, on Thursday assured that President Muhammadu Buhari would not neglect the Igbos in appointments. Okechukwu, who is the spokesman of the party in the South-East, gave the assurance in an interaction with journalists in Abuja. He said that the president still had more than 500 appointments to make and that the Igbos would be carried along fully. He said the appointments made so far were based solely on professional competence, but expressed confidence that Igbos won’t miss out in Buhari’s government. ”My message for my people is that in the next one or two years, they will have nothing to complain about because the Federal Government of Nigeria is a big elephant. ”He has more than 500 appointments to be made and the juicy ones are also there, and even the sensitive ones are also there; we cannot miss out,” he said. The spokesman urged the people to be patient as the government had just spent one month out of its 48-month mandate. ”My people from the South-East are complaining over the appointments made so far; yes, that’s a valid argument but the arguments could be accessed on two grounds. ”One, the president has 48 months mandate; he has just completed one or two which falls below five per cent of the mandate he was given. ”On the other hand, he has over five hundred appointments to be made no matter the delay, to be made between now and December or by this time next year. ”I personally feel it is very much on the side of impatience to assess the president with less than 30 appointments, because there are other crucial appointments still waiting,” he said. He explained that the appointment of service chiefs should not be politicised, considering the current level of insecurity in the country. He expressed confidence in the president’s disposition to fairness. “I do not see President Muhammadu Buhari whom I have worked with for over 12 years neglecting or trying to breach that area of the Constitution that says appointments must reflect federal character,” he said. www.today.ng/politics/buhari-would-not-neglect-igbos-in-appointments-apc-chieftain/ |

Alhaji Sani Shehu, the President, Miners Association of Nigeria, on Thursday said the association would establish the first Gold Refinery in Nigeria in 2016. Shehu disclosed this in an interview in Abuja. Her said the association had concluded arrangement with a Dubai Gold Refinery Company, United Arab Emirate, to establish the refinery in Zamfara. He said the refinery, which would be fully funded by its counterpart in Dubai, would create job opportunities for Nigerian youths and generate foreign exchange earnings for the country. “The Dubai refinery company sources for gold from parts of the world; establishing a refinery in Nigeria is like an expansion of the company. “There will be no need for miners to take their raw gold outside the country for sale or refining when the refinery is established,’’ he stressed. He also said that Nigeria had no database on the quantity of gold being extracted on a daily basis, adding that a good quantity of the mineral was being mined every month and taken to Dubai for refining. According to him, the global business environment is being financed by financial institutions, but in Nigeria, financial institutions find it difficult to invest in the sector. “Our financial institutions find it difficult to invest in the mining sector because they believed that mining is a risky business. “We are advocating that government should conduct seminars for the institutions to educate them on the need to invest in the sector.” He said Nigeria could generate more money from solid minerals than oil if developed. “If solid minerals are developed just like oil sector, the country will generate more income from the sector. “The price of oil is dropping everyday and the international politics on oil prices is worrisome; we cannot experience such in solid minerals because their prices are fairly stable.” |
