Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Thursday assured Lagosians of his administration’s determination to complete the Mile 2-Badagry Road expansion project in quick time. Ambode spoke during an inspection tour of the project, which is being expanded to a 10-lane expressway. He said, “The Mile 2-Badagry Expressway is very important to all of us and like we said, it is a project that we must finish within the shortest possible time.” On the Blue Line Light Rail project, the governor said efforts would be made to ensure that the Mile2 to National Theatre corridor was completed soon. He urged the contractor and workers to increase the pace of work on the project, assuring them that the government would address the challenges they might be encountering in finishing the project. The governor also inspected the Badagry Deep Sea Port project, promising that his administration would give adequate support to the initiative. He said the Sea Port, upon completion, would be the biggest in the African continent. “The land space for the Deep Sea Port is over 1,000 hectares of which we have just been told that there’s going to be a free trade zone and then a container terminal that we are going to have here. “We have a bouquet of investors who have signed onto this project and what that means for us is that we are going to have the largest cargo container port in Africa, situated in Badagry. “We hope that in the next two months, we’re coming to start this project here.” www.punchng.com/news/govt-promises-completion-of-mile-2-road-light-rail/ Cc : lalasticlala Do the needful |

The saga continues. Birdman has filed suit against Jay Z for $50 million, and it’s all over Lil Wayne. Cash Money Records is suing Jay Z’s streaming service TIDAL for streaming Lil Wayne’s album FWA. Cash Money claims it has exclusive rights to Wayne’s music and TIDAL is an illegal intermeddler. In the lawsuit, obtained by TMZ, Cash Money calls out TIDAL for resorting to “a desperate and illegal attempt to save their struggling streaming service.” TIDAL responds to the claim, saying that Cash Money does not have an exclusive lock on Weezy and that he gave it the right to stream his music, in return for an ownership stake in the company. However,Cash Money begs to differ and cites its contract with Wayne, which specifically states Wayne does not have the power to license his music to anyone else. Cash Money also takes shots at Wayne’s FWA, saying it got “tepid reviews” and could hurt Cash Money’s attempts to exploit Wayne’s music. Just yesterday, Birdman was named in an indictment involving the April shooting of Lil Wayne’s tour buses. In January, Wayne filed suit against Birdmanand Cash Money for $51 million. www.rap-up.com/2015/07/16/cash-money-sues-tidal-for-50-million-over-lil-wayne/ |

Gunmen suspected to be assassins on Tuesday night stormed the residence of a lecturer at the Department of Agricultural Economics of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Dr. Deji Adejobi. Our correspondent gathered that Adejobi was shot by his assailants who invaded his residence close to the Tollgate area of Ile Ife. Residents of the area said the gunmen, who stormed the residence around 10pm, shot into the air to scare away residents before firing their target. The deceased was said to be the older brother of the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Police Command, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi. One of the children of the late don, Oyin, narrated amidst tears how the gunmen killed her father and threw the family into a mournful mood. She said, “We finished our evening prayer at 10:05pm when dad drove into the compound. Then I overheard an argument between the gateman and some people. I quickly looked from the window and I saw another black car that entered our compound together with dad’s car. “Our gateman was quizzing the occupants of the other car but they hit him and ordered him to lie down. “The men in the black car stepped out of their car before dad could alight from his and one of them shot into the air. Two of them moved into dad’s car while others came inside the house.” Oyin added that their grandma begged the gunmen, who went inside the house, but they heard gunshot from outside twice. She said further that the gunmen took away the lecture’s car around 10:20pm and she heard her late dad begging them not to whisk him away. “We thought they took him away and we were praying for his safety without knowing that he had been killed,” she said. According to her, the police team found Adejobi’s body where it was. Efforts to know if the police were aware of the case were unsuccessful as the Police Public Relations Officer in Osun State, Mrs. Folasade Odoro, dropped the call while our correspondent was asking him about the case. But the Public Relations Officer of the OAU, Mr. Abiodun Olanrewaju, who confirmed the incident, said the university community was shocked to hear the news of the killing of the don. He said, “We were shocked to hear that he was killed. We just pray God will give the family the fortitude to bear the loss. It is terrible.” |
Barely a week after a building collapsed in Yaba, Lagos, another three-storey building on Wednesday collapsed in Ebute Meta. About half of the building located at on No. 29 Oloto Street, collapsed on the right side leaving the other half hanging dangerously over adjoining buildings. The building has not been occupied since 2012 after a portion at the back collapsed forcing residents in front apartments to vacate. A source observed that rescue workers from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) were at the scene working. The officials were using sledge hammers to demolish the building from the point of the partial collapse. Some residents of the area expressed the fear that if the demolition was not properly carried out, it might endanger other buildings in the area. Mr Folami Goriola, a tenant in one of the buildings on the street appealed to the state government to ensure a controlled demolition to safeguard other buildings. Goriola said that the occupants of No. 27 Oloto Str. where he resides had been given notice to run an integrity test a second time. He noted that the test would ensure stability of their building which was adjacent to there maining portion of the collapsed building. “We are nursing the fear that the wrecks may fall over our building,’’ he said. An eye witness who pleaded anonymity, said that the building collapsed in the early hours of Wednesday. “The collapse happened at exactly at 5.28 a.m. precisely and I called the police emergency number and they responded immediately,’’ he said. He explained that the building had been marked for demolition since 2012 and that the occupants had made efforts to ensure it was pulled down without success. He lamented that the building was a hideout for social miscreants and refuse dump posing danger to the people’s health. Another resident, Mr Rotimi Azeez, said that the back portion of the building had killed about 10 persons when it collapsed in 2012, leading to its being marked for demolition. “The demolition was delayed till it collapsed after 5 a.m. in the morning today,’’ he said. Efforts to get the reaction of LASBCA on the issue failed as an official said that they were not allowed to speak to the press. |
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board on Tuesday in Abuja pegged the minimum entry requirement into Nigerian universities for the 2015/16 academic year at 180 marks. The body, however, said polytechnics and colleges of education, including innovative enterprise institutions awarding National Diploma are to admit undergraduate students with a minimum of 150 marks. The decisions were taken during the 6th combined policy meeting of stakeholders of institutions awarding degrees and certificates. The stakeholders also agreed on the admission quota for the 2015/16 academic year, approving a 60-40 ratio for science and arts-related programmes in all universities while a ratio of 70-30 goes for technology and non-technology related courses in the polytechnics. The meeting was attended by vice-chancellors of universities, provosts of colleges of education and rectors of polytechnics and monotechnics. The Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of JAMB, Prof. ‘Dibu Ojerinde, cautioned tertiary institutions against flouting the admission process, saying that with effect from the current academic session, the board would sanction defaulters who defy the regulation for admissions. In his power-point presentation at the meeting, Ojerinde said a total of 1,436,867 candidates, representing 97.38 per cent applied to degree-awarding institutions as first choice preference, while candidates’ preference for NCE stood at 18,341, representing 1.24 per cent. The 2015 UTME cumulative performance statistics of candidates also released by JAMB indicated that 455,639 candidates scored 200 marks and above. Those who scored between 190-199 stood at 207,720 while those below 160 were 122,091 candidates. For the 2015 admission year, University of Ilorin, Kwara State, topped the first choice university chart for applicants with 7.12 per cent, this was closely followed by University of Benin, coming second with 4.83 per cent. The Federal Polytechnic,Offa in Kwara State, topped most preferred polytechnic with 0.15 per cent, followed by Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot-Osurua, with 0.11 per cent. The Commanding Officer, 72 Special Forces Battalion,
Makurdi, Timothy Lagbaja, has said that the battalion lost 28
soldiers to insurgency in the North-East and in Benue.
Mr. Lagbaja, a colonel, told newsmen in Makurdi on
Wednesday that between 2012 and 2015, the battalion lost
four officers and eight soldiers to the Tiv/Fulani and Agatu
crises in Benue.
He said the remaining 16 were lost to insurgency in the North-
East, while many others who sustained degrees of injuries
were either flown abroad or treated in the country.
The commander said the battalion alone had deployed about
500 soldiers to serve in the special security outfit `operation
Zenda’ to maintain internal security in the state.
According to him, the effort is paying off as weapons hitherto
in the hands of wrong people have been recovered.
He said that the high criminality in the state had been reduced
to “few isolated cases of killings’’. |
