There was massive gunfire fight between troops in the convoy of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai and scores of Boko Haram terrorists who attempted to ambush the Army Chief during an operational visit to troop’s location in the epicenter of the counter insurgency battle on Saturday. The ambush of the Army Chief’s convoy by the terrorists according to a statement issued in Maiduguri and signed by Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, occurred at Faljari village between Mafa and Dikwa. At the end of the hot exchange, 10 Boko Haram terrorists were killed, 5 terrorists were captured, and one soldier was killed while one officer and 4 other soldiers sustained severe gunshot injuries. The statement reads, “The leading column of the Chief of Army Staff convoy was today (Saturday) ambushed by suspected Boko Haram terrorists at Faljari village between Mafa and Dikwa. “The terrorists encountered an overwhelming fire power from the troops in which 10 of them were killed. The troops captured five terrorists. “During the encounter, sadly, we lost a soldier, while an officer and four soldiers sustained gunshot wounds. “The arrested terrorists have been sent for interrogation while the remains of the gallant soldier and the wounded soldiers were evacuated back to Maiduguri. “The wounded soldiers are stable and responding to treatment at 7 Division Hospital and Medical Services. The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Tukur Y Buratai who was on an operational visit to boost morale of his officers and men, visited troops at Mafa, Dikwa and Logomani. “At 112 Task Force Battalion locations Mafa, he commended the troops and enjoined them to continue to be hardworking and dedicated. “At Dikwa, the COAS interacted with a mammoth crowd of internally displaced persons where he assured them of their safety. Thereafter, he addressed some elements of 112 Battalion in which he told them that the Boko Haram terrorists should not have any freedom of action or movement within their area of responsibility. “At Logomani, where troops of 7 Division Strike Group where refitting, he informed them that Nigerians are very proud of them”. “It would be recalled that the unit recaptured Dikwa and is now heading to the next objective. He also said that he was adequately briefed by the GOC 7 Div about their problems. He also delivered President Buhari’s goodwill message. Continuing Col. Usman said, “One interesting aspect of the visit was that Nigerian Air Force led by the Chief of Air Staff; Air Marshal SB Abubakar gave air cover and conducted armed air reconnaissance on the general area”. “While the IDPS were excited with presence of the COAS, troops at various locations were equally in high spirit and ready for any challenge (good to go). The troops indicated their readiness to carry out assigned tasks.” www.vanguardngr.com/2015/08/one-killed-5-injured-as-boko-haram-attacks-army-chief-buratais-convoy/ |

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has told the People Democratic Party chieftain in the state, Bode George, to steer away from politics after the latter’s defeat at the last general election. In a statement issued Thursday in response to Mr. George’s call for President Muhammadu Buhari to probe Bola Tinubu and Babatunde Fashola, two past governors of the state, the APC said that Mr. George and the Lagos PDP had just woken up from a “chronic hallucination” after their defeat by the APC. “Bode George is yet to come to terms that it is all over for PDP in Nigeria and Lagos. He is yet to believe that Lagos APC has forcefully retired him from active politics for ever in Nigeria and Lagos State,” the APC said in the statement by Joe Igbokwe, the state Publicity Secretary. “Why is Bode George finding it difficult to believe that the game is over for him in Nigeria politics talk less of Lagos State? “Who will tell Bode George that nobody takes him serious again in matters of Nigerian politics? Who will persuade Chief Bode George to quit politics now in his own interest?” On Wednesday, Mr. George had accused Mr. Tinubu of complicity in the recent allegations of misappropriation of state funds by Mr. Fashola during his administration. The PDP chieftain questioned some of the contracts awarded during Mr. Fashola’s tenure including the N78 million website upgrade, the N29 billion Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge, and N1.5 billion spent on pedestrian bridges across the state. “And there are so many of these screaming illegalities observable in the record of our poster boy of yesterday,” said Mr. George. “In a more just society, Mr. Fashola should be facing a comprehensive investigation rather than being considered for any appointment at all.” While calling on President Buhari to probe Mr. Fashola, Mr. George said that “Tinubu should not be far behind” at the “interrogation centre.” But the APC responded angrily accusing Mr. George of looting the Nigerian Ports Authority as well as his party’s funds and calling him a “jailbird”. “What is giving Bode George the courage to believe that President Buhari will probe Asiwaju BAT (Bola Ahmed Tinubu) and Fashola, who are the real drivers of change in Nigeria because a Bode George said so?” Mr. Igbokwe asked. “How can a jail bird who plundered and looted NPA, and who just got pardoned the other day because of 2015 elections forget easily that he is part of the problem of Nigeria and not part of the solution? Did Bode George know that his case at NPA and the fraudulent amnesty granted by the former President may be revisited? “How can we forget that Chief George imposed Jimi Agbaje on Lagos PDP and caused a big crisis at Oregun Lagos where the party conducted its primaries? How can we forget that Chief Bode George kept the funds meant for his party campaigns in Lagos knowing fully well that there is no road to where he is going? “How can we forget that it was this same Bode George that initiated the political brigandage and ethnic politics we saw in Lagos that nearly caused xenophobic attacks?” The APC further stated that President Buhari has “full knowledge” of Mr. George’s “dubious activities” during the campaigns. “How can an old man who armed thugs all over Lagos with an instruction to kill if necessary in order to steal Lagos be the one that will tell President Buhari what to do? “Chief Bode George spoke about the cost of projects in Lagos, but the question is this: what does a hut builder know about Lekki-Ikoyi bridge? What does this carpenter know about gold? What does this failed politician know about good governance and service delivery?” www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/188733-buhari-wont-probe-tinubu-fashola-because-bode-wants-him-to-apc.html |

A Rice Farm Consortium investing in a 7,500
hectares of rice farm in Saminaka, Borgu
local government area of Niger State will
spend $100million and employ 4,000 youths
in the state. This disclosure was made over the weekend when Niger State governor Abubakar Sani Bello visited the area as part of his plan to attract investors to the state to take advantage of the rice farming potential of the state. The governor stated during his visit to the farm that both foreign and local investors will be encouraged to invest in rice production in Niger State. A statement by the chief press secretary to the governor indicated that the 7,500 hectares of rice farm will provide 4,000 jobs, and that the farm has been leased for 10 years from Upper River Basin by PJS Rice, owners of Pearl Universal Impex Rice Mill located in Bida. Consequently, the governor was quoted as saying, “The state has been blessed by God Almighty with many water resources for convenient all year round rice farming. In Borgu alone, we have Swashi Dam and Kubuli Dam among others, aside from the Auna Dam and other dams of different sizes in all the three zones of the state.” www.leadership.ng/news/454436/firm-to-invest-100m-in-rice-farming |
