Bamanga’s Trouble With Aso Rock by omamokta: 11:02am On Aug 01, 2012
Before his current travail as a result of the prosecution of his son along with other alleged fuel subsidy fraudsters, ruling Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur’s sojourn in Wadata House had reportedly been laced with thistles.
Said to be favoured by President Goodluck Jonathan, he emerged chairman of his party on March 24, against the choice of his North-East region Dr. Musa Babayo.
Days to his emergence, the PDP North-East caucus conducted an election to produce a flagbearer for the office since the chairmanship of the party had been zoned to the region. Tukur lost to Dr. Babayo.
But Aso Rock, according to PDP watchers, and prodded by President Jonathan, rallied behind Tukur who was subsequently and unanimously elected National Chairman at the party’s convention which held at the Eagle Square.
But, as our sources said, barely a month after taking over, tension grew between his top aides and the party’s national secretary, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, the former governor of Osun State.
FRESHFACTS’ sources inside Wadata House revealed that animosity and tension still waltzed uncontrolled there.
They said there was no love lost between Tukur’s office and those of other senior national officers of the party sharing the Wadata building with him.
The sources said that following the impeachment threat by Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila of the House of Representatives against President Jonathan, over partial implementation of the 2012 budget, many Aso Rock insiders and PDP stalwarts allegedly suggested to Tukur how to control the feud.
The sources added that Tukur may have had his own style of addressing the issue which did not impress the stalwarts.
Allegedly working with some national officers at the Wadata House, the powerful hawks in Aso Rock reportedly tagged him a disappointment, and tried selling it to the president.
We also learnt that the relationship between him and the president nose-dived.
An Aso Rock insider volunteered: “What did the president not do to support Alhaji Bamanga, but what has he done to help the president? Why was he given all the support he received from us?”
We are reliably told that the president was, therefore, not disposed to saving Tukur’s neck, when he was told that the Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede committee listed Bamanga Tukur’s son as one of the suspected oil thieves via Eterna oil.
A source close to Tukur angrily expressed his disappointment with President Jonathan whom he described as having shot the party in the foot.
“Never has this kind of thing been done to any PDP chairman. If they think they are humiliating the chairman, then they are only disgracing and hurting themselves and our great party. It’s unfortunate.”
Meanwhile, FRESHFACTS reliably learnt that the days of Bamanga Tukur as PDP chairman may already be numbered as Aso Rock hawks, with other party moguls outside government, have begun shopping for a new person for the office.
According to one of the sources, it is to “sanitise our great party and fix a square peg in a square hole. President Jonathan’s transformation agenda is too important for any individual to scuttle. We will partner with a party chairman who will be proactive enough to do what is needed to achieve Mr. President’s party thrust on that.”
