Research In Motion Could License Next-gen Blackberry OS, CEO Says by Chikebrain: 9:50am On Aug 03, 2012
Research In Motion Chief Executive Thorsten Heins told the UK Telegraph Thursday that the Canadian BlackBerry maker could license its next-generation operating system to a competitor, such as Samsung or Sony.
Research In Motion, once atop the smartphone market, has struggled to compete with handsets sold by Apple and Samsung as it shifts to a new operating system, BlackBerry 10, due next year. The company’s shares have fallen by more than 50% this year.
“We don’t have the economy of scale to compete against the guys who crank out 60 handsets a year,” Heins told the paper. “To deliver BB10 we may need to look at licensing it to someone who can do this at a way better cost proposition than I can do it.”
