Got a degree , Got a Job? well , Welcome To Modern Slavery ! by Nkila: 6:05am On Dec 21, 2007
After going through  so much work place stress  I start thinking that all this schooling and skills we 're  getting are just meant to make us modern slaves. What's  the point to  have a master's degree or a phd and then have to report to a stupid boss?   undecided
People in the  villages who have no education and live thanks to hunting and fishing are somehow happier than the rest of us who have taken so  many exams.

then go back to your village to fish and hunt. abi na by force? tongue

If you don't want to 'report to a stupid boss' then start your own business. . .bottom line is that your fate lies in your hands, make of it what you will wink

@debosky
the guy is making a point here. what he says is a fact in Nigerian that the average graduate undergoes a lot of work related stress that is tantamount to slaving for your boss.

Debosky is one of these people who will never scan their recklessness at their job. When they have a slight piece of power,they become arrogant ,as if others were just good to listen and obey orders. Guess what, you better watch the news around the world about job related stress and the outcomes that follow.

really am surprised dat there is no known study into job related stress in Lagos and beyond.what with unattainable targets given to marketers(banks are culpable!), arrogant and unfriendly bossess, crazy rush-hour traffic and challenges of finance.i mean, we graduates need a break! we all wanna work but nobody's cutting us some slack;most jobs dont even leave avenues for personal development both internal and external.its crazy working in lagos especially.the crux of the matter is we graduates ultimately have to gear our thinking towards wealth creation and entrepreneurship initiatives.that is the immediate solution.nowadays, no one wants to work for any man for long even if its a job u enjoy;and i tell u, how many graduates enjoy what they find themselves doing

Sincerely, the Nigerian graduate does have to lean towards enterpreneurship. I concur.

In this life, before you move up you must first go down.No matter what you do in life.Even when someone inherits affluent patrimonies,someone during the course of that wealth must have gone down before the wealth is being passed to him.Good education brings forth good job and good job guarantees good pay which serves as a good capital for you to start the kind of life you choose. It is now left for you to decide whether you want to work for money or whether you want money to work for you.Those wealthy people you see did not just start off like that,somebody must have made the sacrifice.Even people that begs for money go down before their benefactors;i the act of begging they go down, they lower their pride.So don't see it as a slavery but a way of life.No matter the boss,do you work,save as much as you can and start a business.That is the trend baby!!!!!!!!!!!

Lovely Post

Our environment is fast changing. Its no longer the calm and steady work environments our parents savored during their time (especially in the civil service).

What we have now are companies that are trying hard to meet up with international standards and competition benchmarks in Nigeria's harsh business conditions.

The strain of the company is passed through the employee hierarchy just like "transferred agression" in human behavior.

Who is affected? Everyone is. From the Boss to his subordinates, and back to the business. The "family" who receives an exhausted an irrational parent at the close of work is also affected, and so is the development of the "Child".

What can our generation do? If you have a good paying job, you should be gearing towards building up capital to becoming an entrepreneur. Or you should be building an investment portfolio that would work for you in later years.

We Nigerians have to find a balance between family and career.

We also should stop imbibing the "Spending, Spending" style of the Americans.

I've discovered that we Nigerians (Lagosians especially!) cultivate a spend-it-all attitude even though we face a lot of job related stress and worries.

But come to think of it, this attitude could be as a result of the stress itself!We go on spending spree to "cure" our stress and try to cover it up.We spend on cars to avoid molue;we spend on wardrobe to avoid discrimination;we spend on gadgets to be "among"; we spend on entertainment to relieve stress effects.

I mean its a merry-go-round dat never stops.

Ultimately, just as evryone has mentioned, entrepreneurship should be the goal of evry working individual; that is the ability to be selfsustaining and able to control your source of wealth on your own.

@SOJ

Will you blame it on them? These people have paid the price. They've been told to acquire education and they've had it. But despite the education itself, no good paying job to showcase their talents or capital to startup on their own. Even if you are self employed, NEPA palava is another thing to contend with.

You talk of Molue, what of security? "One Chance" ?

Have you considered that?

Bro, we are suffering in our land. Admit it.

Well said SOJ

good point to note d9jaboy

But we most remember that some of the richest entrepreneurs in the whole today had worse circumstances lurking around them (I'm talking of those that had legitimate businesses).

isn't that not the reason we are in nairaland, to find information to help us break loose.
you can't disregard the fact that the job still puts food on the table, many of us know the problem but we are yet to find a solution.
