President Goodluck Jonathan’s new aide, Doyin Okupe, indeed,
won a contract with the Benue state government and absconded without completing the job, the former governor who awarded the project, George Akume, confirmed Tuesday.

Mr. Akume would not however say why the contract failed and
what action his government took to compel Mr. Okupe to deliver
on the project after making payment to him.


He however told PREMIUM TIMES he would wish not to be dragged into the deal that has now prompted calls for Mr. Okupe’s sack, saying his successor administration, as well as Mr. Okupe, should provide answers to any concerns on the contract and deal with the matter as necessary.

“Government is continuous; there is a new government there (Benue) now, and again, the man involved is alive and should speak on that,” the former governor, now the Senate Minority Leader, said on Tuesday through his spokesperson, Becky Orpin.

On December 18 , 2006, just after the then Bayelsa State 
Governor, Goodluck Jonathan, had been named PDP presidential running mate to Umaru Yar'Adua, human rights activist and Jonathan confidante Oronto Douglas described in glowing terms.

Among them, Jonathan was well respected among Ijaw leaders, had built a successful development program in Bayelsa, and had been a good Governor.

A new WikiLeaks cable shows, however, that only the day before, Mr. Douglas’ true feelings about Jonathan had been different. In a conversation with an American official, Douglas described Jonathan as “part of the system of corruption that had impoverished the Niger 
Delta for decades.”

And that “successful development programme in Bayelsa”? "Even his development initiative is viewed with skepticism by the populace," Douglas said.

He said that the outstanding corruption charges against Jonathan and his wife were troubling, and that while Jonathan enjoyed the support of the "Ijaw leaders," the "restive youth" had little respect for the "so-called leaders."

Obviously, you're too lame to grasp the import of his question. How's someone's with a criminal case on his neck and the minority leader of a leading opposition partys word to be trusted? if you were a judge would you admit his testimony in your court? Not holding brief here for anyone as I believe Mr Okupe should come out and clear the air but its only fair that a testimony from George Akume is taken with a pinch of salt. I honestly don't know what these baboons are chattering over.

Rather than execute the project, the online report further claimed Dr. Okupe bolted with the over N200,000,000 (two hundred million Naira only) mobilization money, which he is believed to have invested in his ill-fated political ambition.

That President Goodluck Jonathan went ahead to appoint Dr Okupe as Public Affairs Specialist for the administration and by extension Nigeria despite his criminal background should not come as a surprise to any close observer of this administration as it only confirms the fatal attraction President Jonathan has for appointing or retaining tainted and damaged persons with shoddy pasts or questionable character to serve in his Government the party said.
