Virtual Machine, a self-contained operating environment that behaves as if it is a separate computer. For example, Java applets run in a Java virtual machine (VM) that has no access to the host operating system. Another big example of Virtual Machine is the internet. It sits nowhere on your operating system and perform tasks i.e. TCP/IP access to the internet Non-virtual Machine, is the software that make use of operating environment. For example .COM/.COM++ and Microsoft .DLL executable software that links its native API code to the underlying operating system for features like language grammer and syntax computation. In bias to OS, OS is the foundation software of a machine; that which schedules tasks, allocates storage, and presents a default interface to the user between applications. The facilities an operating system provides and its general design philosophy exert an extremely strong influence on programming style and on the technical cultures that grow up around its host machines, hence making Unix native API the ideal choice for secure systems. |
