In one thread about marryin an atheist, many christians imediately said NO, GOD FORBID, IMPOSIBLE, NEVER etc. Only a few said they may think about it.majority wont even consider them as friends

christians want what the irreligious have i.e. a freethinking mind.
even within christendom,some group of christians are viewed as been on the part to damnation.i remember a friend of mine(lets call him charley) who was in a committed relationship with a christian girl(bella).charley was raised a christian and abides by the christian way of life.he preaches about jesus(even to me) and was and still is an usher in his church(a "new generation church".bella attended a baptist church and held on to the belief that ladies who wear trousers,use make-up and brazilian hair are on an expressway to hell.this wasnt initially a problem to charley.but as time went by,she wanted to stop him from listening to "worldly music" like diana ross and lionel richie.she said foreign movies are bad for christians.she even said anybody that watches lord of the rings should ask god for forgiveness.to her,charley needed to become "born again" again.my friend eventually ended the relationship despite all the "god said its you".
this isnt an isolated case.its widespread in christianity.i wanted to rent a house in gbagada sometime ago and was told the landlord wants a deeper life member.so the discrimination isnt just between the religions or against the irreligious,it also occurs within christianity.thats why catholics disown their children for marrying protestants.thats why christians have "our,my,your,their church"

Religious discrimination is a big problem in Nigeria. I think atheists get the worst of it because their beliefs are so far away from that of the majority Christians and Muslims.

A Deeper Life member is likely to discriminate more against a catholic than an MFM member because MFM's beliefs are much closer to his. At the same time, he'd probably prefer his daughter to marry a catholic, rather than a Muslim because at least Catholics worship the same god. In the same way, Muslims are preferable to traditionalists because they believe in only one god so it is easy to tell yourself that it is the same as the one you worship. Even a devil worshipper is preferable to an atheist because he at least believes in the supernatural.

This is simply a manifestation of the us versus them tribal mentality that is a basic part of human nature. I doubt it's going to change until Nigerians start becoming less religious.

But a time will come(if we keep representing our faith in bad light) when religionists will be treated the same way as atheists are now. Now for humanism, I'm sure when various religions were in the ascendancy they made similar claims, ie, that they would be tolerant of other belief systems, only to climb to the top and become the oppressor. Other religions have achieved tolerant outlooks though, I'm no expert on religion but say bahai and buddhists (which isn't classified as a religion by many). So intolerance is not a foregone conclusion for successful belief systems. It probably depends on said systems attributes, and humanism is certainly built on principles of a global respect for life and various other similar concepts. For instance, countries with large atheist populations, which usually practice humanist principles, are not intolerant. Another issue is education and technology. We simply haven't had it this good in our history in just about every aspect of our lives. Communication will break down cultural barriers, we are becoming a global community. More or else one culture (just ginourmous), diversity will always exist but there will be a universally accepted moral code used as the base of all other codes.
One thing I could see coming to pass is ridicule of religious people that aren't able to separate their religion from their dealings with other people, especially if the beliefs are considered generally harmful or in violation of the universal code. Downright discrimination though would be very rare.

Yes, atheism is a new culture. I dont have to ask everybody, the history books are there. I will help you with a summary. Culture is the totality of a peoples way of life over a period of time. The point is : if their were atheists in the past, they dare not make it known or try to get converts(like the evangelical atheists in N l) else, like you said, they will be stoned. Why: because it was not their trademark. It was yet to become anything closer to culture. That which cannot be felt does not exist. Dont forget that the people abide by whatever their ruler believed in. I cant remember an atheist monarchy. My proof for their non-existence in the past is that their presence was not palpated, because like true cowards, non(thats if their were any) was bold enough to admit it. On the contrary, what do you say?

Buddhism, bahai, other peaceful belief systems. Hdi and religiosity. I equate hdi to tolerance, debatable, but I think it's fair to accept that the more developed are more tolerant. You don't relate genocide and similar with highly successful countries.
