Hello House,
Can anyone give me advise on Golf 3(2 doors), manual with a/c, engine 1.6. I am just about to purchase one but i need to know the major advantages of the car and disadvangages so i wouldnt regret later, i have an option between this car and a nissan sunny (2 doors)1.6 engine, automatic but no a/c. I will really appreciate advise expecially from people that use the car and engineers.

They are, for lack of a better word, indestructible, anything goes with that car. I remember back in the days, overheating was the only major problem it had, so people used to open the engine compartment when going on long trips. Damn, those good old days.

Still, for a learner driver, using that manual gearbox mehn, must be some form of exercise.

Golf 3 is a good car but it has got its electrical problem. The engine is very good. I will take it any day ,any time to that of a nissan sunny. A nissan sunny develops mechanic engine faults and also the wheels of the car keeps developing fault ; like bearings, break pads etc

Re: Why Do Driving Schools Use Volkswagen Beetle To Teach Driving? by wonlasewonimi: 2:21pm On Nov 20, 2012
Do people still go to driving school. I thought they bring their driver's licence to them at home while they learn on the job.
Re: Why Do Driving Schools Use Volkswagen Beetle To Teach Driving? by Youngsage: 2:27pm On Nov 20, 2012
The real reason is this: the clutch of VW beetle doesn't get burnt/ develop fault easily, unlike some other cars. Hence a learner who is still learning control of clutch (cable) , with most manual vehicles, will get it burnt often which leads to often replacement of clutch, but in beetle if u press clutch and accelerator down together it wont develop fault in time. That is why most driving schools go for it, not only because it is cheap.
And any person that learnt driving with automatic car and cannot drive manual e.g beetle is not a driver at all. If u can drive beetle like a pro, then u can drive any car. Driving manual is more technical and sweeter to drive, my opinion.

Also the engine is behind so if any crash it wont affect any engine part only front booth grin grin

I was in Naija throughout last week and I saw twice where people were being thought how to drive using VW beetle cars and the question popped up in my mind. I think it might be due to the fact that it's quite cheap to buy to start a Driving School, and also if the learners crash it, it will be cheaper to fix. undecided

Re: Why Do Driving Schools Use Volkswagen Beetle To Teach Driving? by Exponental(m): 5:07pm On Nov 20, 2012
I think it's cos it is relatively cheap. Though it is facing out, I hardly sight one @ sanya b/stop where we have many driving schools but those who have keep cos its maintenance is cheaply cheap.
My friend bought his 40k in 2004. So, now, it shld be like 15k or less.

A modified Volkwagen beetle is one of the most attractive thing on wheels. I won't mind buying one, and restoring it little by little. If anyone has one for sale, please let me know!

There are many sites (e.g oldbug.com) which specialise in just old VW's, as they are now classics/vintage. For instance, this beautifully restored 1965 beetle costs $19,500

15,000/£60 for a Beetle which sells for not less than £1000 on eBay? http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_sacat=0&_nkw=classic+vw+beetle&_frs=1

Reverse export opportunity!
Re: Why Do Driving Schools Use Volkswagen Beetle To Teach Driving? by tundedublin(m): 5:41pm On Nov 20, 2012
1. The car is cheap. Any accidents occuring by the learner will not usually leave exorbitant fixing costs or damage.

2. The engine is at the rear. Therefore, head-on collisions with other moving or stationary vehicles or objects would only dent the trunk (which is rather located in front).
No risk of damaging the radiator or other engine parts as the case may be in other conventional vehicles.

3. Use a car like the old volkswagen beetle model to learn driving and you would be able to drive and manoeuvre almost any other automobile.

azpekuliar: I remember this vehicle with a lot of nostalgia as a kid...but..

Why do driving schools (in Lagos) still use old, battered, rickety VOLKSWAGEN BETTLES (TYPE 1) to teach learners how to drive??

Is it because of the cost? There are more recent cars that are just as cheap to use for learning purposes.

Is it cos of its awkward gearing, where you could start off in second gear?... cheesy

or the manual drive stick shift that juts out in your face like a haulage truck.... cheesy

I must admit that I tend to admire, the car from afar, but only as an icon of automotive history, (the most manufactured model of a single design) but still can't place why it's still the car of choice for driving schools. I think it's look is pretty intimidating for a wanna-be-learner driver.... cheesy

In contributing let's share some experiences with this automotive icon - the 'Peoples Car'.

Contributions pleaseee.....

its because it has its engine at the back which will make damages minimal in case of accident.

redsquare: I think it's because of the repair/replacement cost in case of a crash. My friends dad bought a second hand VW Beetle N6,000 last year. grin

Ar u sure its ur friend's dad or ur dad

....but some pastors are not mad nd they use to pray for madman xx
Re: Why Do Driving Schools Use Volkswagen Beetle To Teach Driving? by olubode01(m): 7:25pm On Nov 20, 2012
I suggest that,it might be as a result of its complexity. This will enable the learners to adapt to any type of car
Re: Why Do Driving Schools Use Volkswagen Beetle To Teach Driving? by Manuche(m): 8:12pm On Nov 20, 2012
it is because the engine is in d back.
