This action left Anambra State with one bona fide urban city, Onicha. However, the selection of Awka as the capital of Anambra State improved the posture of the state on the platform of urban cities. With the creation of Ebonyi State in 1996, Imo State lost Afikpo to the new state while Enugu State lost Abakaliki too.
