drnonny: I used manual transmission system to learn Hw to drive. Now i'm blessed with an automatic 2001 toyota camry. i am not used to automatic cars. please i need advice on how to go about it.

Also what does full options entail in cars?

Thank you all in anticipation for your prompt and useful contributions.
If you have actually been driving manual cars then, driving automatic which is much more easier shouldn't be a headache to you. You only need to get acquainted with the selection sequence which is as follows: P- Park, R- Reverse, N- Neutral & D- Drive. Just select each of the above while the engine is 'ON' (Running) and see the car's reaction. You must however, depress the brake pedal before any selection. Only 'P' hooks the wheels of the car whether the engine is running or not.
Re: How To Drive Automatic Vehicles by Mojir(f): 2:34pm On Oct 09, 2012
They forgot to tell you that once ignition is on and the gear is on 'D' your car moves forward whether throttled or not; and when the gear is on 'R' it moves backward whether throttled or not.

I learnt a hard lesson from this!.

chucky234: unlike manual car that requires total concentration especially with the clutch thing, damn.

And it's Total Concentration that makes a good driver. Complacence makes a bad driver.

I started driving in Nov. 2008 and it's been manual since then. Last Sunday, 7th Oct., 2012 was the first time I drove an auto tranny car and to be honest, nobody showed me what to do and it really was a very boring drive as the car drove me rather than what I'm used to.
If you can drive a manual tranny then you should be able to drive an auto tranny car but, someone who started with auto can NEVER drive a manual without being taught.

mxxpunkxx!:

Very good question.
Typical Nigerian follow-the-crowd mentality.
If you drive a manual in 2012, then you're far behind.
At least, that's what 99.9% of Nigerians believe. SMH

Hey that's very unfair,an automatic is easier and smoother to driv that's why most people go for it,if uv ever bin caught up in terrible traffic with a manual car,ul understand d need to step up and get an automatic vehicle, esp as traffic na evryday affair in most parts of d country

If you can handle manual successfully, auto shouldn't be difficult for you to handle
I learnt with manual too and I have pretty much been driving with manual. Both the cars at home and work are manually operated. When it comes to automatic, I know how easy it is, but to kick it off is always my problem.

I have learnt from this thread cox I keep 4getting my practicals. *eyes rolling*
Re: How To Drive Automatic Vehicles by JOXY(f): 3:22pm On Oct 09, 2012
No need to panic my brother. Just get somebody to site near you. I drove manual for 4 years, and when I got my Automatic I drove it home myself (a friend was beside me. The next day I drove it to work myself without anybody. You can do it.
Re: How To Drive Automatic Vehicles by ghettodreamz(m): 3:35pm On Oct 09, 2012
Since you already know how to drive Manual then switching to Auto wouldn't be a problem for you. It's hard to go from Auto to Manual but pretty easy switching from Manual to Auto. Bear this in mind, you don't make use of your left foot anymore while driving, no more clutch. And you can't take out the key from the ignition unless the car is in park (P-Mode). It will take some time to get used to the changes, that comes with the automatic transmission.

GOING TO A DRIVING SCHOOL IS ARRANT WASTE OF MONEY AND PRECIOUS TIME FOR YOU

With your knowledge of driving a manual car, that gives you an edge over other people, as there are larger percentage of Nigerians who only know how to drive cars with automatic transmission. I will recommend you find someone to put you through things in person, it shouldn't take you more than 2 days (with few hours to spend on each day)to get the hang of it. Look for an open field around your vicinity where you can practice.

P-Park
N-Neutral
R-Reverse
D-Drive (D1,D2,D3 & D4)

Use your D2/D3 when you get stuck in a pothole or somewhere muddy and you need to maneuver yourself out.

Highly advisable, use D4 almost all the time for best economy and lowest engine wear, gear shifting is the headache of the auto transmission system to take care of by itself.

If you can drive manual car conveniently then automatic should just be a BONUS for you.

Manual car all the way,
@op,since you learnt how to drive with manual transmission,it,ll be quite easy for you to adapt to automatic but never try that without having a qualified automatic driver by your side at least till you can comfortably drive without thinking you were driving a manual one,i know some of my mates who forgot they were driving automatic and they keep trying to step on the clutch and shift the gear when they are face with certain hazards on the road.Thats what happens when you borrow and drive an automatic car not belonging to you..
Pls never attempt driving from the tutorials you get here,BTW,FRSC should be very strict with the issuance of driving license,There should be separate licenses for both manual and automatic transmissions.someone who learnt with a manual car can drive automatic with his license and not vice versa, this should be made strict.most drivers on nigerian roads never attended driving schools, driving is not just ones ability to move a car,you also need to know all the highway codes, hazard perception etc.

They are!! For everyday driving auto is the way to go. Now for any other day you want to show off your driving skills, then manual it is. Wait till you drive in some neighbourhoods where there is a stop sign every 10feet and you will regret driving a manual or as it is with lagos, wait till you are stuck in one of those 6hr traffic jams and you will appreciate auto trans.
I doubt there is even any manufacturer that still makes manuals en masse. It's just like making a car in 2012 that has manual windows and side view mirrors. I mean wtf.
Re: How To Drive Automatic Vehicles by SailorXY: 4:53pm On Oct 09, 2012
People ignore manual tranny when learning these days & jump straight to auto. I think its laziness TBH. U have been blessed to learn a manual first, experience will put you thru auto easily
Re: How To Drive Automatic Vehicles by Nobody: 5:16pm On Oct 09, 2012
My father complained that our nissan pathfinder with automatic transmission do loose power or lemme say reduced itz speed wen he floors the throttle trying to increase the speed, so I checked it out and found out that when u floor the throttle to the ground completely that the car auto system interpretes it as if u need more torque so itz like it goes down to gear 1 to enable u move smoothly ie y itz speed reduces and the sound changes as if itz drooling. U just depress d throttle a little bit 2 speed and maybe half way 4 maximum speed considering the terrain u are in

manual cars are for sure outdated only being used by the conservative people like the british. for goodness sake the world is moving let's move with it. using a manual car is like using a polaroid camera in this digital camera age.

Put motor for drive while stepping down on brake pedal. Release if and apply ur need for speed skills. But theres no boost and speedbreaker tho

Funny you say that. I think you need to visit American Auto Fora, and see where Americans are converting their auto's to manual. The reason being the driving experience. Take a look at these:

http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/460049-TipTronic-to-Manual-Transmission-Swap?highlight=manual+conversion

I myself have been swamped by demand for the Audi 01E 6-speed manual, and have shipped quite a few conversion kits Stateside. Last year, I shipped out 4 kits, this year so far, I've shipped out 7! smiley

So that does tell you something. The US guys DO like manual, as it unleashes the potential in any car. And believe me, these guys drive long distances between different states, jams heading out of town are not unusual, and they still cope fine with manual tranny.

There are some car that have provision for auto and manual in US and other LHD countries, with Britain having only an auto option. An example is the Audi S8 D2. All UK-spec cars were only available with 5-speed Tiptronic, LHD models had both 5-speed Tiptronic and 6-speed manual. So that kind of blows your arguement about the "Conservative British" / manual connection clean outta the water. wink

with due respect to what you said and your opinion as a car car specicialist what I mean is that most people in most adventurous nations do drive auto cars obviously due to its comfort and luxury I have travelled wide. what I see is that most cars in most country's use auto but my observation in uk is different as most of them are using manual cars. of course I know that manual cars perform better that's why all formula 1 cars are manual, but am talking about luxury my brother. lest I forget I respect your opinion most on Nairaland cos i have been following you for a while on autos. cheers

Unbelievable!!! if you can drive a manual gear drive then, it should take you 5 mins to figure out how to drive an automatic. BTW, you need only one of your legs.
Re: How To Drive Automatic Vehicles by temmym4(m): 11:39pm On Oct 09, 2012
It s either the poster hasnt even gotten the Automatic car yet or he doesnt even know how how to drive at all cos if u have test-driven your ''new gift'', u should know.. for a manual driver, an Automatic transmission vehicle is a piece of cake, it takes just a few minutes of practise which u can even achieve on your own without anyone beside u, unlike someone who only drives Automatic and getting to drive a manual for the first time (God help u if u wont sh*t for body when the car embarasses u multiple times on a single spot grin .. If u really wanna laugh yourself off, giv your manual car keys to an Automatic vehicle driver, u go see drama when he finally get the car moving and starts shifting the stick grin grin)

P(ark) N(eutral) R(everse) D(rive) are the main gear positions and u should place your right leg on the ''brake'' before shifting, trust me, the ever first time i drove an Auto, i switched vehicle with a friend and i never knew about the brake stuff, i was shifting from ''P'' to "R" and the thing was stucked, had to call him and asked how to unlock the gear sad grin

One more funny thing, u gonna find yourself always wanna press the clutch to change gears and later realising clutch no dey under the foot o grin. i made that funny mistakes multiple times, but it is nothing to be worried about, u ll surely get used to it, u can as well get someone to sit beside u and hit u hard on your right hand when he/she sees u trying to shift a gear, with 3 different good hits, u won't make the mistake no more grin #JustJoking
I do enjoy stick shift compared to Auto transmission though.. All the best smiley

blink182: The sequence is

P - Park
R - Reverse
N - Neutral
D - Drive

JUst step into your car, release the handbrake if it is on, press on the brake pedals and start the ignition. With your feet still on the pedal, change gear from park into reverse or drive then release the brake pedals and off you go. Very boring car to drive. Manuals rule.

I never listed according to label on gear lever !!!! It was only written as it came to mind.

Peeps who have NEVER driven an "AUTO" gear car....are always the first to condemn it! shocked shocked
What are they yearning? Based on "experience" or just "rumor"?

I have driven both for over 20yrs!

A lot of people drop "MANUAL" and take up driving an "AUTO"

But believe me, l am yet to see one person who drove an "AUTO" for one year...... and went back to "MANUAL".

You can continue to delude yourselves and bad-mouth "AUTO" (Manual has its own good sides too), l KNOW that when the time is ripe, you will switch to "AUTO" Gear! grin grin

Lastpage!

BTW: people are always afraid (and therefore talk ignorantly) of what they dont know or have never experienced!
Re: How To Drive Automatic Vehicles by Nobody: 7:14pm On Oct 11, 2012
^^^ Lol @ Brother Last. grin grin

Well I've switched back to manual, from auto. I find auto boring as heck, especially on a long trip. It takes the fun factor out of driving, and makes me think less. No challenge whatsoever.

And yeah, I'm an "oldie", been driving as a licensed driver for 25 years, though drove for a lot longer unlicensed. I've also been in the motor trade since 1990, and have run a garage since 2001. So I would say I'm qualified to make an informed choice, not from hearsay, but from experience. wink

Less than 10% of the cars being sold in developed countries are manual and the number is getting smaller.

Good luck with your fight to keep manuals alive.Remember there were people who believed carburetor, contact set, and tube tires will still be in use but they've gone the way of the Dodo.

Manual will purely be a specialty part soon like the spare tire.
