'Chinese Take Over Bread Business' Word on the streets is that Nigerian bakeries are shutting down because they can't keep up with competition from Chinese bakeries such as Oasis, Watsons etc.

I wonder how the Chinese bake bread so cheap. What's the 'Chinese formula' for baking bread?

I hope some Nigerian baker would understudy them: find out their secret, ie source of raw material, techniques, management, and distribution.

No need to curse them out and acccuse them of withcraft like Mozambiquican businessmen who couldn't compete with a few chinese traders.

After all we want good and cheap bread, don't we?

The chinese dont use anything special my friend. They have a govt who gives them almost 0% interest loans to establish businesses in emerging economies:dats their secret.Nigerian bakers here have to contend with rising cost of flour and other materials, crazy import duties and related fees on foreign baking machinery and equipment, and last but not the least, our very own dismal power supply.add it all 2geda and see if dats not enough to increase cost of production.infact nigerians should prepare for increases in cost of baked goods soon.
Much later in this quarter, if the rising cost of energy finally impacts Nigeria, and gas refuses to be circulation, we should expect close to 15-20% increases.

Don't the Chinese bakeries in Nigeria also have to contend with these same problems?

I think you are a baker trying to know some business secrets. Why don't you walk into Oasis or Watsons to ask their manager '' which formula una they use ?'' grin

our problem is marketing, we're too greedy over profit.
the logo of Nigerian business is "buy today please don't come back tomorrow"
Chinese like to sell in large quantities with low price so that who ever buy today will still come back tomorrow.
they don't focus much on profit rather they prefer to have you as a customer everyday even when they're not gaining.
but we Nigerians we will place a price in other to profit immediately and loose our customer tomorrow.
the problem we face in importation is the same they face.

what we should learn is how to sell in large quantity not how to profit at first sells.

hey fellas,

not absolutely criticising chinese stuff, but be very watchful of these overly cheap commodities.

sometime last year on CNN a chinese factory was televised i guess this was unknown to them, you wont believe what am about to tell you, part of the ingredients for making meatpie was chopped up cartons, since most cartons are brown it served well as meat, all they did was soaked the cartons in water to weaken it, just the type used for packaging products like milo etc, after that a chopping knife was used to dissect them and was properly mixed with all other flavours, that is why in the UK, US some goods from china are banned and the few that go thru must meet certain specifications.

as to the formula, am still on the look out.

u r so wrong.although i'm at the risk of making excuses for Nigerian bakers, this IS the real situation here.

@Seun
My argument is dat the chinese operate in the same environment with us BUT with better leverage. They av the full support( moral, financial and otherwise) of their govt while Nigerian bakers here av little or nothing. The chinese dont bake any better only dat they operate with more resources at their disposal.Note that we face this problem in the textile and leather industries too.
There are great Nigerian bakers out there but the chinese may just be a step ahead o

@zheroes
now thats scary shocked

there is truth in what you said,
in area I live in, local news said that some chinese go about in catch of domestic cats which they used it's skin to produce jackets and it's meat served in there restaurants.

@soj

I don't think that chinese make progress because of the financial aids they get from their govt.
neither do they bakes better than we. but our problem is still there the price.
even you give a nigerian 1milion loan to start a business he'll still conplain it's in our blood to conplain.
but if we can learn how to be competitive in price you see that we'll make a head way and people will not buy chinese any more.
chinese product is not good health wise but people tends to buy them for economic purpose.

i 've got nothing against them chinese bakers, if things are cheap good for us all, but i guess i would love to die expensive, not cheaply though, it was aired on CNN, that heightened tension at that point in time since they are hosting the forth coming olympic games (2008).

Our ostentatious life style is part of the problem,80% of the average owner of a bakery has either more than 1 wife or sires many children.

His income is more does not match his expenditure,so he has to complain, however we must also confess that govt policies is killing business unless you are ready to cut corners, which i belive thats what the chinese do and also they cut cost with thier standard of living and doing business.in business we call it optimisation

the story regarding the carton used in making food was dispelled as a disgruntled employee in a chinese newspaper came up with the story and circulated it around.

In regards to skinning of cats, yes that is definitely possible. I have seen videos of dogs being skinned in china though on fortunate, ,what can you do?

With the economical influence china has on the global economy, many displeasing news, rumours will continue to circulate.

many people in the western world have some sort of phobia towards china. but guess what, these same people consume goods and services provided by the chinese economy.

Taking USA for instance. if all the production of goods are done in USA, how many americans will be able to afford things they are buying now?

Though the chinese business model brings about cheap goods, it is also shorthanding chinese employees making these goods. A good documentary to watch is called BLUE JEANS. about girls working in a blue jeans manufacturing factory.

link to google video, I definitely recommend it, download and share with friends enlightening. Even if you hate china, it is a good watch.

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=321727527393238859&q=blue+jeans+china&total=38&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=1

We can say all we want about china, but each country has its own unique problem. Though what is happening in china is unfortunate and heartbreaking, keep in mind the number of people in china and standard of living.

So why would a chinese bakery factory make extremely cheap bread. COMPETITION. with large number of factories like this, each person would like to get some business to sustain its operations regardless if it is making huge profit margin. The difference between western and china business is that in the western culture, companies what huge profit margins, china = quantity of order, the more the better for them. Obviously salary for workers is very very low, some making about 800yuan per month roughly about 100$, supporting family.

It is a crazy world we have to survive one way or the other, the way i choose to sustain myself may not be pleasing to you, but i am still alive.

Shout all you want, say all things bad against china, it is not going to stop any time soon. that is simply the situation. Until solid economic reforms are in place with accountability, nothing will change.

China is going through what korea and japan went through when those countries were developing their economy. Compare to when absolute communism was in place, it is a better place now.

We also have our own problems.

the story regarding the carton used in making food was "managed"

The Chinese government manages a lot of the information inflow and outflow in china. The person behind the story was apprehended and throughly dealt with.
Re: 'Chinese Formular' For Baking Bread? by naijaking1: 7:37am On Jan 23, 2008
No credence should be given to such 'carton' stories.

I remember a long time ago, somewhere in Imo state, there were 2 competing bakers.

One learnt the secret of using lot of shortening/butter in his bread, while the other relied on his vast family business name for success.

The guy who learnt to use lots of butter in his formular started out-selling his more famous competitor as you would expect.

After, a few years the rumor began going around that the guy using more butter in his bread was being assisted by witchcraft using human body parts.

A stupid story, but likely to get a hearing in naija, because of illiteracy.

If you ask me, I would say, if cartons, body parts, chinese juju, whatever makes bread better and cheaper and approved by the health department, then use it!

Wait o most people I know here in Abuja buy either ur standard Nourish, Charis, Feran, Imperial n such other brands n some specialised like Grand Square. Oasis n Ocenic (Chinese) are not like taking over in anyway neither are they cheaper. Besides u'd have to drive out to buy from them meanwhile the Naija brands are sit just around the corner. I think wat they have going for them is the supermarket environment in which they sell n the taste of their bread.
I don't think they are out selling the others.

The way I see it , Chinese poeple are traditiona conscious they like there local waay in doing things. They import their local materials into the country from far away china. But the Nigerian bakers are using their local materials but they tpp are importing yeast up to the flower for baking. If Nigerian Bakers too can produced their local flower, they will send the chinese packing
