He Made A First Class But No Job. by Nobody: 4:33pm On Oct 04, 2012
please nairalanders, i need advice for a friend. He made a first class in agronomy but needs a job. He wants to lecture because thats what he loves to do. He plans going for his masters but needs to work first. I wouldn't mind if advice is given as to what should be done. If its a scholarship for his masters, please i need authentic sites or any opportunity around. Thanks.

How many jobs has he applied for, to start with?
Or does he think the jobs will find him?

He has been applying for jobs just like every job seeker will do. Your advice is what i need or any opportunity you think will be useful now.

How many places has he applied to? How many tests or interviews has he been called for?
Since he has a first class degree, he should apply for any and every entry level job that he can find. As an agronomist, he can work in any of these FMCGs, like BAT, Nestle, Guinness, NB Plc, WAMCO, P&G, UAC, Unilever, etc. They all advertise entry level jobs. He should find their addresses, go to their offices, and drop his CV.

I agree with Ajanlekoko on the above especially on the bolded.
Since he made a first class, he doesn't need to do a masters degree in his field but could go straight for a PhD if he gets a supervisor which should not be difficult in his school or any school with specialist in his field of study.
As for job, he needs to keepmapplying aggressively and pray that God grants him grace .

How Dumb can some people sound, ain't you people tired of questioning the credibility and intelligence of people who made first class? Those who awarded him the first class are not dull, besides you don't need to be a genius to make a first class. Infact geniuses don't make first class cos they think beyond the scope of the lectures. He has not gotten a job cos there are numerous applicants competing for few available vacancies. So please desist from your erroneous notion.

Though it's true that our academic system is bastardised not to the extent of giving a first class to someone who actually merited a third class. We all know the level of job racketeering in Nigeria. Your friend with 3rd class who landed a mouth-watering job has not told you what he did to get the job. For all I know the guy is just one out of many guys with good grades trapped in the web of job market. My advice is that he should see himself as a job creator not a job seeker. He could try the common wealth scholarship. The truth is paid employment will not give him financial freedom. Let him think about entrepreneurship. I wish him well.

i only asked for advice or helpful tips here, could be useful scholarship sites or something similar. Is it reasonable that a graduate would sit back at home waiting for jobs to seek him out? That you didnt make a first class doesnt mean you cant make it and a first class isnt a guarantee that things will work out fine. I have a second class upper in industrial mathematics and i'm still applying for jobs, who wouldnt think of furthering if tthe money was there?

It is almost impossible to buy a first class. People who sell grades will hardly sell a first class. Your post is so childish and fooooolish.

On the average, For every 2 jobs, there are 20,000 people competing for it. at the end of the day, 19,998 will fail to get the job. The competition is getting tougher and less fairer than some decades ago in the country.

you need a course in english language!

Having said the above, getting a job is not easy for first class and other grades alike. If there is no opening, the degree wouldnt be needed.

Your story doesnt exactly check out. If he really made a first class and wants to lecture that is very easy, he should simply apply for a graduate assisstant position in his alma mater, and whilst lecturing as a graduate assistant, he can continue pursuing his postgraduate degree. Because I know several universities offer semi automatic employment to first class graduates, even 2-1 holders sometimes find it relatively easy. What school did he graduate from?

Not exactly.
Universities hardly hire nowadays. There's a civil service 'embargo on employment'. Applies to the HATISS category as well.

I highly doubt this. There were vacancies for lecturing positions in some naija dailies middle of the year. Even if the government schools don't employ, he shouild try the private universities. But I can assure you that there is no embargo on employing lecturers anywhere in the country unless the bolded means last weeek.

Bro, its not easy getting a university job at all, just like Ajanlekoko mentioned. I know the number of folks that are actually applying but all unsuccessful. I have mentioned somewhere on this forum that lecturing is a very lucrative job, even in Nigeria unlike most people make u believe. If he gets employed as a GA in a Uni..., his salary would "almost" double what some telcomm coys pays a call center operative...plus he gets other allowances, , he does't work late and everyday and he can easily get a sponsored international graduate study abroad if he is smart.

Same here. Not to sound ***^^** but am wondering why it's the friend who's asking for the 1st class dude undecided

There seems to be conflicts in

~ He made a first class in agronomy but needs a job.

~ He wants to lecture because thats what he loves to do.

~ He plans going for his masters but needs to work first.

Let him go with the 2nd and like others have mentioned, graduating with a first class is like a job ticket waiting for you from your University. @Wise-old-man's words are well written for your case.
Re: He Made A First Class But No Job. by Nobody: 10:54pm On Oct 25, 2012
Sure, you think its so easy getting a lecturing job in a private university with just Bsc? Thats a big joke. Really, most universities only retain their first class students if there is a need to get more assistant lecturers. You go out there and see how things are done and dont rely on what you hear or read from the dailies alone. Things are changing so fast in this country.

You don't even know the background of who you're responding to before you start making assumptions. SMH

Go out there ko, 'enter the place ni'. There's a clear difference between internal recruitment and external recruitment.
