Ondo Poll May Witness Violence, Manipulation – Observers by mukina2: 1:07am On Oct 20, 2012
Executive Director, Centre for Human Rights and Ethics in Development, Mr. Mashood Erubami, has said today’s governorship election in Ondo State may not be devoid of violence and manipulation.

Erubami told reporters in Akure during a training for election observers that the revelation emerged from the group’s pre-election observation.

He said, “The result of CHRED pre-election observation containing observed trends of election preparations, nature of campaign and general atmosphere in the state has continued to create fear that the coming election might be tainted with some violent and manipulative anomalies.”

The CHRED is one of the observer groups accredited by the Independent National Electoral Commission for the election.

According to him, there is a noticeable political violence that can encourage voter apathy.

He, however, added that success of the poll would be determined by activities of politicians and other stakeholders and not the INEC.

Erubami said, “Freeness, fairness and election credibility are now in the hands of political leaders in the state and is up to them to focus their efforts on putting the proper conditions in place for the conduct of a legitimate and peaceful election.”

The former Chairman of Transition Monitoring Group said as rigged and violent election undermined legitimacy, so also a flawed electoral process could undermine the peace process.

“No doubt, the INEC has undertaken adequate election preparations despite its tight financial condition, conducting credible election that conforms with best practices require more efforts,” Erubami stated.

Drafting soldiers for election purposes is within a close proximity of unleashing violence on people in itself.

The Federal Government is very much aware of the antics of some unscrupulous elements, from within and outside the State, who are bent on fustrating the whole electoral process just to satisfy their paymasters.

The deployment of soldiers to the 3 senatorial zones is a welcome development, the directive of the GOC to the soldiers to shoot any troublemaker that ATTEMPTS to resist arrest is also a welcome move.

I hope this will keep at bay jobless moneybags who pretend to love the State more than the indigenes. May the best candidate win.

I wouldn't blame the FG for bringing the military to the state because if you stay there you would see how effective they have always been. But come to think of it, which would you prefe, military men that are ready to curb violence or thugs that are there to vent it on the masses. For all of you that want to vote and dm't have voters card, just bring 10k and u'l get one.*winks*

Jonathan said the government security forces would go hard on any one that imports thugs into the state to manipulate figures. Does not seems he was referring to the present governor, he can't import thugs into his own state. And he can't be referring to his own political party as well, we are only left with one other party. tongue

I really love the idea of regional integration and would have supported it but for tinubu, I believe he has some hidden agenda.
